Every Buddha-Land Entirely Pure

Fascicle thirty-three opens with the tenth dedication's newest vow: that every buddha-land, vast as the dharma-realm itself, becomes entirely pure, each one able to manifest every other buddha-land within it. Fourteen kinds of jeweled adornment follow — thrones, canopies, bells that forever sound every buddha's own voice, trees bearing immeasurable wondrous jewels as their flowers and fruit — all of it arising from none other than the Tathāgata's own wholesome roots.

Fourteen Jeweled Adornments

The vow opens with every buddha-land made vast as the dharma-realm itself, each land able to manifest every other land within it — the same interpenetration this sūtra returns to throughout — before descending into fourteen concrete kinds of adornment: thrones spread with jeweled garments, bells that forever sound every buddha's own voice throughout the dharma-realm, and trees bearing immeasurable wondrous jewels in place of flowers and fruit.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Child of the Buddha! This bodhisattva mahāsattva further dedicates the wholesome roots cultivated through the giving of Dharma in this way: 'May every buddha-land become entirely pure, adorned with inexpressible, inexpressible adornments. Each and every buddha-land, its measure vast, the same as the dharma-realm, wholly wholesome and unobstructed, pure and radiant with light, where every buddha manifests the accomplishment of true awakening. The pure domain within a single buddha-land is entirely able to manifest every buddha-land; and just as within that single buddha-land, so too is it within every buddha-land. Each and every land is adorned entirely with pure, wondrous jeweled adornments, immeasurable and boundless, equal to the dharma-realm. Namely: asaṃkhyeya pure, jeweled thrones, spread with every kind of jeweled garment; asaṃkhyeya jeweled canopies, jeweled nets hanging down; asaṃkhyeya jeweled parasols, every wondrous jewel reflecting one another; asaṃkhyeya jeweled clouds, universally raining down every jewel; asaṃkhyeya jeweled flowers, pure throughout; asaṃkhyeya railings, balustrades, eaves, and lattices formed entirely of every jewel, purely adorned; asaṃkhyeya jeweled bells, forever sounding every buddha's own subtle and wondrous voice, flowing throughout the dharma-realm; asaṃkhyeya jeweled lotus flowers, blossoming in every kind of jeweled color, radiant and flourishing; asaṃkhyeya jeweled trees, arranged in rows all around, with immeasurable wondrous jewels as their flowers and fruit; asaṃkhyeya jeweled palaces, with immeasurable bodhisattvas dwelling within them; asaṃkhyeya jeweled towers, vast and lofty, stretching far and near; asaṃkhyeya jeweled parapets, formed of great jewels, wondrously adorned; asaṃkhyeya jeweled gateways, wondrous jeweled necklaces hanging down all around; asaṃkhyeya jeweled windows, adorned purely with inconceivable jewels; and asaṃkhyeya jeweled crescent ornaments, shaped like a half-moon, formed from a gathering of every jewel. All of this is entirely adorned with every jewel, free of defilement and pure, inconceivable, arising from none other than the Tathāgata's own wholesome roots, fully endowed with the adornment of countless jeweled treasuries.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

"Bells that forever sound every buddha's own subtle and wondrous voice, flowing throughout the dharma-realm" turns architectural adornment into something closer to a teaching instrument — the jewels are not decorative in the way a palace's decorations might be, but continuously active, still speaking the Dharma long after any buddha has finished a sermon.

Part 385 Complete

This continues the tenth dedication's prose section. Chapter 25 continues in Part 386 as the vow turns to jeweled rivers flowing with every pure, wholesome dharma, jeweled oceans brimming with the water of the Dharma, and jeweled lotus flowers that forever sound the wondrous Dharma's own voice.
