Jeweled Trees Bearing Bodhisattvas as Fruit

The catalogue shifts register: rather than simply describing each jewel, it now names what happens to whoever beholds or touches it — garments that grant incomparable samādhi, a kāṣāya robe that grants the gate of dhāraṇī the instant one gives rise to the mind of enlightenment, and jeweled trees whose branches host birds proclaiming the Dharma and whose flowers seat immeasurable bodhisattvas roaming the whole dharma-realm.

What Beholding or Wearing Each Jewel Accomplishes

Where earlier Parts simply named jewels, this passage attaches an effect to nearly every one — dignified bearing that gives rise to bliss, a robe that grants a gate of dhāraṇī the instant one gives rise to the mind of enlightenment, a throne on which a buddha roars the great lion's roar — before turning to jeweled tāla trees, described branch by branch, leaf by leaf, down to the bodhisattvas seated cross-legged upon each flower.

The jeweled tree, described part by part — trunk, branch, leaf, flower, fruit — turns a single object into a complete teaching apparatus: birds proclaiming the Dharma in the branches, bodhisattvas seated in the flowers, wisdom emitted from the leaves, and a never-regressing fruit awaiting whoever simply looks. Nothing about it is decorative; every part of the tree does something.

Cities, Palaces, and Robes That Loosen Attachment

The catalogue turns from the botanical to the civic and domestic — villages that cause whoever beholds them to abandon worldly ways, a palace where a king possesses a bodhisattva's own body strong as Nārāyaṇa, and a dwelling that removes, in whoever enters it, any lingering attachment to a home.

A jeweled dwelling that removes attachment to dwellings, and jeweled garments that teach non-attachment through the very act of wearing them, both turn the object against the desire it would ordinarily satisfy. The most beautiful possible house, in this catalogue, does not deepen the wish to possess a house — it dissolves it.

Part 387 Complete

This continues the tenth dedication's prose section. Chapter 25 continues in Part 388 as the long catalogue of jeweled adornments continues still further, before the vow turns toward what a buddha-land purified in this way ultimately provides for every sentient being who comes to dwell within it.
