The Jeweled Catalogue Closes

The vast catalogue of jeweled adornment that opened in Part 385 finally closes, turning inward at its very end — jeweled eyes, ears, tongues, and bodies, then jeweled bodily, verbal, and mental karma — before a closing vision: within the measure of a single hair's tip, immeasurable bodhisattvas dwell, accomplishing pure wisdom, and just as within that single hair's tip, so too throughout the whole of empty space and the entire dharma-realm.

Jeweled Faculties, Jeweled Karma

Having spent three Parts describing jewels external to the body — thrones, rivers, trees, palaces — the catalogue turns at last to the body's own faculties, rendered in jewels: eyes that behold the ten powers, ears that hear every sound throughout the dharma-realm, a tongue able to speak every language, and finally bodily, verbal, and mental karma, each one taking wisdom as its foremost guide.

This turn from external jewels to the faculties of the body itself is the catalogue's real destination — every throne, tree, and palace described across the previous three Parts was, in the end, a way of approaching this: eyes, ears, a tongue, a mind, all rendered as jewels in their own right, no less adorned than anything external to them.

Immeasurable Bodhisattvas Within a Hair's Tip

The catalogue closes on its own governing principle: within the measure of a single hair's tip, in a single buddha-land, a single direction, a single place, immeasurable, inexpressible numbers of great bodhisattvas dwell, accomplishing pure wisdom — and this holds not once but everywhere, throughout the whole of empty space and the entire dharma-realm.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Child of the Buddha! This bodhisattva mahāsattva, throughout every one of those buddha-lands, within a single buddha-land, a single direction, a single place, the measure of a single hair's tip, there are immeasurable, boundless, inexpressible numbers of great bodhisattvas, all of them accomplishing pure wisdom, dwelling there in abundance. Just as within a single buddha-land, a single direction, a single place, the measure of a single hair's tip, so too is it, throughout the whole of empty space and the entire dharma-realm, within each and every buddha-land, each and every direction, each and every place, and the measure of each and every hair's tip. This is a bodhisattva mahāsattva's dedication of every wholesome root, universally wishing that every buddha's own land be entirely endowed with every kind of wondrous, jeweled adornment.

After four Parts naming well over a hundred distinct kinds of jewel, the passage closes not with a summary of them but with the single image that makes the whole enterprise coherent — a hair's tip containing immeasurable bodhisattvas, and that same fact holding true everywhere at once. Every individual jewel named across this catalogue was, in effect, one instance of this single claim.

Part 388 Complete

This completes the long catalogue of jeweled adornment within the tenth dedication's prose section. Chapter 25 continues in Part 389 as the sūtra notes that everything just described for jeweled adornment holds equally for adornment with fragrance, flowers, garlands, anointing incense, burning incense, powdered incense, robes, canopies, banners, and streamers — before the dedication turns to what such universally adorned buddha-lands actually accomplish for the beings who dwell within them.
