What the Tenth Dedication Accomplishes

The tenth dedication's prose section closes as it began — with Samantabhadra's own boundless practice and vow — naming fourteen kinds of sovereign power, from vastness and non-attachment to sitting cross-legged in a single body pervading the whole dharma-realm, then ten kinds of purity reaching every sentient being, every buddha-land, and every dharma at once, before a final formula: all of it fully possessed, accomplished, and reaching the farther shore.

Fourteen Kinds of Sovereign Power

Fulfilling Samantabhadra's own boundless practice and vow, the bodhisattva beholds, within thought after thought, every buddha appearing in the world and every buddha's own sovereign power — fourteen kinds in all, from the power of vastness and non-attachment to a single body, seated cross-legged, pervading the immeasurable dharma-realm throughout the ten directions without constricting a single sentient being.

Ru-Yi Translation

When a bodhisattva mahāsattva dedicates every wholesome root born from the giving of Dharma and other practices in this way, he fulfills Samantabhadra's own immeasurable, boundless bodhisattva practice and vow, entirely able to purely adorn every buddha-land throughout the whole of empty space equal to the dharma-realm, causing every sentient being to attain the same, fully endowed with boundless wisdom, comprehending every dharma, beholding, within thought after thought, every buddha appearing in the world, beholding, within thought after thought, every buddha's own immeasurable, boundless sovereign power, namely: the sovereign power of vastness, the sovereign power of non-attachment, the sovereign power of being unobstructed, the sovereign power of the inconceivable, the sovereign power of purifying every sentient being, the sovereign power of establishing every world, the sovereign power of manifesting inexpressible language, the sovereign power of manifesting in accordance with the time, the sovereign power of abiding in never-regressing spiritual wisdom, the sovereign power of expounding the whole boundless dharma-realm without remainder, the sovereign power of giving rise to Samantabhadra bodhisattva's own boundless eye, the sovereign power of hearing and upholding the true Dharma of immeasurable buddhas with an unobstructed faculty of hearing, the sovereign power of sitting cross-legged in a single body pervading the immeasurable dharma-realm throughout the ten directions, causing no constriction to any sentient being, and the sovereign power of universally entering the immeasurable dharmas of the three times with fully complete wisdom.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

"Causing no constriction to any sentient being" stands out among these fourteen powers — a single body pervading the immeasurable dharma-realm throughout the ten directions could easily be imagined as overwhelming, yet the passage insists it leaves no being feeling crowded or diminished. Boundless presence, here, is explicitly paired with the guarantee that it never comes at another's expense.

Ten Kinds of Purity, Reaching the Farther Shore

The dedication closes on ten kinds of purity — of every sentient being, every buddha-land, every dharma — before a final formula echoes across the whole tenth dedication one last time: all of it fully possessed, accomplished, cultivated, equal, manifest, known, comprehended, contemplated, and purified, reaching the farther shore.

Ru-Yi Translation

He further attains immeasurable purity, namely: the purity of every sentient being, the purity of every buddha-land, the purity of every dharma, the purity of the wisdom that entirely comprehends every place, the purity of the boundless wisdom pervading the realm of empty space, the purity of attaining the wisdom of every distinct language, universally according with sentient beings through every kind of speech, the purity of emitting immeasurable, fully complete light that universally illuminates every boundless world, the purity of giving rise to the wisdom of a bodhisattva's own practice throughout the three times, the purity of the wisdom that universally enters, within a single thought, every assembly at the seat of enlightenment of every buddha throughout the three times, and the purity of entering every boundless world, causing every sentient being to do what they each ought to do. All such things as these are entirely and fully possessed, entirely accomplished, entirely cultivated and perfected, entirely equal, entirely manifest, entirely known and seen, entirely comprehended and entered, entirely contemplated, entirely purified, reaching the farther shore.

Ten near-synonyms for completion, chained together at the very close of this dedication's prose — possessed, accomplished, cultivated, equal, manifest, known, comprehended, contemplated, purified — read almost like a liturgical formula rather than a description. After forty Parts building toward it, the sūtra allows itself, here, to simply repeat the fact of arrival rather than argue for it further.

Part 392 Complete — The Tenth Dedication's Prose Section

This completes the prose section of the tenth and final dedication — the dedication equal to the immeasurable dharma-realm (等法界無量迴向). Chapter 25 continues in Part 393 as the whole earth trembles in six ways throughout worlds as numerous as the dust motes of a million buddha-lands in every direction, a rain of heavenly flowers falls, and bodhisattvas all named Vajra Banner arrive from distant worlds to bear witness — the same signs that marked the ninth dedication's own close, now heralding the tenth dedication's verse.
