Entering the Measureless

The last four pairs complete the gateway, and then the ground opens out. Twenty domains are named, and each is measureless — alternating, all the way down the list, between what beings are and what buddhas do. The bodhisattva's response to all of it is a single sentence about how the work will be done.

The Last Four Pairs

The remaining four move from lands to bodies to voices to time itself, and each denies the reality of the very thing the bodhisattva then goes on to work with carefully.

Ru-Yi Translation

Though they know that all lands are like empty space, yet they are able to adorn buddha-lands with pure and wondrous practice; though they know that the dharma-body of the buddhas is in its own nature without body, yet they adorn a body with the marks and the excellent features; though they know that the voice of the buddhas is empty in nature, quiescent, and not to be spoken, yet they are able to bring forth, in accord with all beings, every kind of pure sound in all its differences; though, in accord with the buddhas, they comprehend that the three times are only a single thought, yet in accord with beings' understanding and discriminating they cultivate practices through every kind of characteristic, every kind of time, and every number of kalpas. By these ten kinds of skillful means and wisdom the bodhisattva rouses the surpassing practice, and from the sixth ground enters the seventh; and having entered, this practice constantly stands present before them — and this is called abiding on the seventh ground, Dūraṅgamā, the Far-Reaching Ground.

雖隨諸佛了知三世唯是一念,而隨眾生意解分別,以種種相、種種時、種種劫數而修諸行 — though they comprehend, with the buddhas, that the three times are only a single thought, yet in accord with beings' understanding they cultivate through every kind of time and every number of kalpas. The last pair is the one that makes the others possible. A bodhisattva who knows that all time is one moment could have no reason to spend kalpas on anything; the reason given is other people's way of experiencing it. Duration is entered because beings live in it.

Twenty Measureless Things

The list alternates strictly: a measureless something about beings, then a measureless something about buddhas, ten times over. Read as pairs, it is a description of a bodhisattva standing between the two and taking in both at once.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Child of the Buddha! A bodhisattva mahāsattva who abides on this seventh ground enters the measureless realms of beings; enters the measureless work by which the buddhas teach and transform beings; enters the measureless net of worlds; enters the measureless pure lands of the buddhas; enters measureless dharmas in all their differences; enters the measureless wisdom of the buddhas' present awakening; enters measureless numbers of kalpas; enters the measureless wisdom by which the buddhas comprehend the three times; enters the measureless differences in beings' faith and understanding; enters the measureless bodies of name and form that the buddhas display;

enters the measureless differences in beings' desires, delights, and faculties; enters the measureless words and sounds of the buddhas that gladden beings; enters the measureless kinds of beings' mental conduct; enters the measureless vast wisdom by which the buddhas comprehend; enters the measureless faith and understanding of the śrāvaka vehicle; enters the measureless teaching by which the buddhas expound the path of wisdom and bring beings to faith and understanding; enters the measureless accomplishments of the pratyekabuddhas; enters the measureless gateways of profound wisdom that the buddhas expound to draw beings in; enters the measureless skillful practices of the bodhisattvas; and enters the measureless matters of the Great Vehicle's gathering and completion, which the buddhas expound so that bodhisattvas may enter them. This bodhisattva thinks: 'Such measureless domains of a tathāgata as these could not be known even in a hundred thousand million nayutas of kalpas; and I ought to accomplish and fulfil them all with a mind that is effortless and undiscriminating.'

「佛子!此菩薩以深智慧如是觀察,常勤修習方便慧起殊勝道,安住不動,無有一念休息廢捨;行、住、坐、臥乃至睡夢,未曾暫與蓋障相應,常不捨於如是想念。

Ru-Yi Translation

"Child of the Buddha! This bodhisattva, contemplating thus with profound wisdom, constantly and diligently cultivates the surpassing path roused by skillful means and wisdom; they abide unmoving, and there is not a single thought in which they rest or set it aside. Walking, standing, sitting, lying down, and even in sleep and in dreaming, they have never once for a moment accorded with the hindrances, and they never abandon such mindful attention.

以無功用無分別心成就圓滿 — I ought to accomplish and fulfil them all with a mind that is effortless and undiscriminating. Placed directly after an admission that these domains could not be known in a hundred thousand million nayutas of kalpas, this is not bravado. It is the only available conclusion: what cannot be got through by effort will have to be done some other way. 無功用, effortlessness, is the eighth ground's defining quality, and here on the seventh it appears as an intention rather than an accomplishment.

乃至睡夢,未曾暫與蓋障相應 — even in sleep and in dreaming, they have never once for a moment accorded with the hindrances. The claim is about the hours nobody supervises. A practice that holds while walking, standing, sitting and lying down is still a practice one is doing; one that holds in dreams has stopped being something done at all — which is the same point the previous sentence made about effortlessness, stated from the inside.

Part 448 Complete

This continues Dūraṅgamā, the seventh of the Ten Grounds. Chapter 26 continues in Part 449 as the sūtra says that this bodhisattva is complete in all ten pāramitās in every single thought-moment — giving, discipline, patience, effort, meditation, wisdom, skillful means, vow, power and knowledge, each defined in a single clause — after which Vimuktacandra asks whether the factors of awakening are fulfilled only on this seventh ground, or on the others as well.
