A Million Asaṃkhyeyas of Dhāraṇī
The four wisdoms finish their rounds on the largest possible subject — the vehicles, the ten grounds, the buddhas' awakening in a single thought, the Tathāgata's own speech. Then the retention-gateways arrive, and a seat is set out, and a whole trichiliocosm of beings is taught at once.
The Last Rounds
One vehicle and many vehicles; the ten grounds as stages and as one road; the buddhas awakening in a single thought and in every time and place; and finally the Tathāgata's voice itself, differentiated into eighty-four thousand kinds of hearer.
Again, the unhindered wisdom of dharmas knows the sameness of the one vehicle; the unhindered wisdom of meaning knows the differing natures of the several vehicles; the unhindered wisdom of language expounds all vehicles as without difference; and the unhindered wisdom of eloquence expounds the boundless dharmas of each single vehicle. Again, the unhindered wisdom of dharmas knows all bodhisattva practice, the conduct of wisdom, and the conduct of dharma, its wisdom realizing them as they go; the unhindered wisdom of meaning knows the differences in meaning among the divisions and stations of the ten grounds; the unhindered wisdom of language expounds the aspect in which the path of the grounds is without difference; and the unhindered wisdom of eloquence expounds the boundless aspects of practice of each single ground. Again, the unhindered wisdom of dharmas knows that all the Tathāgatas accomplish perfect awakening in a single thought; the unhindered wisdom of meaning knows the differences among the various times and the various places and the rest; the unhindered wisdom of language expounds the differences in that accomplishing of perfect awakening; and the unhindered wisdom of eloquence, upon each single phrase of the Dharma, could speak for measureless kalpas without exhausting it.
Again, the unhindered wisdom of dharmas knows the Tathāgata's speech, his powers, his fearlessnesses and the unshared buddha-dharmas, his great loving-kindness and great compassion, his eloquence and skillful means, and his turning of the Dharma-wheel, its all-knowing wisdom realizing them as they go; the unhindered wisdom of meaning knows the Tathāgata's differentiated voice, following the minds, the conduct, the faculties and the understandings of eighty-four thousand kinds of being; the unhindered wisdom of language, following the conduct of every being, speaks with the Tathāgata's voice in its differences; and the unhindered wisdom of eloquence, following what beings have faith in and understand, speaks with the fullness of the Tathāgata's wisdom and pure conduct.
知諸乘差別性 — knows the sameness of the one vehicle, knows the differing natures of the several vehicles. The two halves are assigned to different wisdoms rather than argued between. The one-vehicle teaching and the three-vehicle teaching are not reconciled here; they are given as what two distinct faculties respectively see, and the Dharma-master needs both.
The Seat, and What Is Retained
Ten dhāraṇīs are named and then multiplied past counting; and then, on the Dharma-seat, the only beings not outshone are buddhas and bodhisattvas of the tenth ground.
"Child of the Buddha! A bodhisattva abiding on the ninth ground, having attained such skillful unhindered wisdom, obtains the Tathāgata's wondrous treasury of Dharma and becomes a great Dharma-master. They obtain the dhāraṇī of meaning, the dhāraṇī of dharma, the dhāraṇī of wisdom, the dhāraṇī of illuminating radiance, the dhāraṇī of excellent wisdom, the dhāraṇī of abundant wealth, the dhāraṇī of awesome virtue, the dhāraṇī of the unhindered gateway, the dhāraṇī of the boundless, and the dhāraṇī of manifold meanings; a million asaṃkhyeyas of such dhāraṇī-gateways as these are all brought to fullness in them, and with a million asaṃkhyeyas of gateways of skillful voice and eloquence they expound the Dharma.
Having obtained a million asaṃkhyeyas of dhāraṇī-gateways such as these, this bodhisattva, in the presence of measureless buddhas, before each single buddha, hears the true Dharma by means of these million asaṃkhyeyas of dhāraṇī-gateways; and having heard it, does not forget it, and expounds it for others through measureless differentiated gateways. When this bodhisattva first sees a buddha and bows their head to the ground in reverence, they at once obtain measureless dharma-gateways in that buddha's presence; and the dharma-gateways so obtained are such as those great śrāvakas famed for hearing and retaining could not take in through a hundred thousand kalpas. Having obtained such dhāraṇīs and such unhindered wisdom, this bodhisattva sits upon the Dharma-seat and expounds the Dharma; and for the beings filling a great trichiliocosm they expound it according to the differences in what each mind delights in. Excepting only the buddhas and the bodhisattvas who have received consecration, in that whole assembly there is none whose awesome virtue and radiance can be compared with theirs.
陀羅尼 — dhāraṇī, from a root meaning to hold or retain. What is described here is not a formula recited but a capacity not to lose what has been heard, which is why the passage immediately measures it against the great śrāvakas famed for exactly that. 聞持, hearing and retaining, was Ānanda's particular excellence.
唯除諸佛及受職菩薩 — excepting only the buddhas and the bodhisattvas who have received consecration. 受職 is the tenth ground's consecration, and the exception is a signpost: the only station above this one is the one the chapter has left to describe.
Part 468 Complete
This continues Sādhumatī, the Ground of Excellent Wisdom, the ninth of the Ten Grounds, in fascicle thirty-eight. Part 469 continues from the Dharma-seat, as the bodhisattva wishes and it is so — one voice understood by all, radiance sent out with the teaching, Dharma spoken from every pore of the body and from every formed and formless thing in a trichiliocosm, and all the flutes and drums and singing of every world sounding as Dharma.
