The Ornament the Deva King Wears

The goldsmithing simile that has run through all ten grounds reaches its last form — gold inlaid with great maṇi and worn on the body of the Sovereign Deva King himself. Beside it stands the light of Maheśvara, which does nothing but make body and mind cool.

Gold, and Cool Light

What this bodhisattva does with the buddhas is unchanged from every earlier ground — offerings, and questions — but the result is now stated as a likeness rather than a distance: their works of body, speech and mind are not different from a Tathāgata's.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Child of the Buddha! A bodhisattva abiding in such wisdom is not different from a Tathāgata in the works of body, speech and mind; they do not forsake the bodhisattva's powers of samādhi; through numberless kalpas they serve and make offerings to all the buddhas, in each single kalpa making offerings with every kind of offering-implement. Supported by the spiritual power of all the buddhas, their light of wisdom grows more surpassing still, and they explain skilfully every difficult question within the dharma-realm, such that through a hundred thousand koṭis of kalpas there is none who could stump them. Child of the Buddha! It is like a goldsmith who makes body-ornaments of the finest true gold, with great maṇi jewels inlaid among them, which the Sovereign Deva King himself wears upon his body, such that no ornament of any other god or human can match it; a bodhisattva on this ground is likewise — from the first ground up through the ninth, the wisdom and conduct of every bodhisattva cannot match theirs.

Ru-Yi Translation

The light of wisdom of a bodhisattva on this ground is able to bring beings on up to entering all-knowing wisdom itself, and no other light of wisdom can do so. Child of the Buddha! It is like the radiance of Maheśvara, king of the gods, which is able to make beings' bodies and minds cool, and which no other light can match; the light of wisdom of a bodhisattva on this ground is likewise able to make all beings cool, on up to their abiding in all-knowing wisdom itself, and the light of wisdom of all śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, and of bodhisattvas up to the ninth ground, cannot match it. Child of the Buddha! When this bodhisattva mahāsattva can already abide in such wisdom, the buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, expound for them further the wisdom of the three times, the wisdom of the differences of the dharma-realm, the wisdom that pervades all worlds, the wisdom that illumines all worlds, and the wisdom of kindly mindfulness toward all beings — to state the essential point, on up to expounding for them the attaining of all-knowing wisdom itself. In this bodhisattva, among the ten pāramitās, the pāramitā of wisdom is the most predominant. It is not that they fail to practice the other pāramitās.

能令眾生身心清涼 — able to make beings' bodies and minds cool. 清涼 has been the sūtra's word for relief since the eighth ground's Brahmā King, and it is chosen again here in preference to any word for brilliance. The tenth ground's light is measured by what it does to a body in the heat, not by how far it carries.

不異如來身、語、意業 — not different from a Tathāgata in the works of body, speech and mind. This is the strongest thing said of any bodhisattva in the chapter, and it stands two Parts after the clod of earth. Both are meant: the works are indistinguishable, and the wisdom behind them is not comparable. The chapter lets the two statements sit side by side without reconciling them.

Maheśvara's Own Station

The ground that has just been compared to Maheśvara's light now takes his throne — and what it does there is give away the practice of the pāramitās to everyone, exactly as the eighth and ninth grounds did.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Child of the Buddha! This is called, spoken in brief, the bodhisattva mahāsattva's tenth ground, Dharmameghā, the Ground of the Dharma-Cloud; were it to be spoken of in full, measureless asaṃkhyeyas of kalpas would not exhaust it. Child of the Buddha! A bodhisattva abiding on this ground most often becomes Maheśvara, king of the gods, sovereignly free in the Dharma, able to bestow upon beings, upon śrāvakas, upon pratyekabuddhas and upon all bodhisattvas the practice of the pāramitās; and within the dharma-realm there is no difficult question by which they can be stumped.

能授眾生、聲聞、獨覺、一切菩薩波羅蜜行 — able to bestow upon beings, upon śrāvakas, upon pratyekabuddhas and upon all bodhisattvas the practice of the pāramitās. The seventh ground gave this to the two vehicles, the eighth and ninth likewise; here 眾生 is added at the head of the list, so the bestowal begins with ordinary people. Ten grounds of ascent end with the practice being handed down to whoever will take it.

Part 483 Complete

This continues Dharmameghā, the Ground of the Dharma-Cloud, the tenth and last of the Ten Grounds, in fascicle thirty-nine. Part 484 finishes the ground's prose — the four means of gathering, the resolve to be that on which all-knowing wisdom relies, samādhis counted in the dust-motes of ineffably many buddha-lands — and gives the simile of Lake Anavatapta, whose four great rivers flow out across Jambūdvīpa, never running dry, growing as they go, and filling the sea.
