Seen in Every Buddha's Presence
The vow is made and Samantabhadra appears — seated on a lotus beside the Tathāgata, and at the same moment in every other buddha's presence in every other world, teaching there. Ten thousand kinds of cloud rain down, and beings in the evil destinies are released.
The Body Manifested
He does not arrive; he manifests a form-body 如其所應, as is fitting for those who are looking — and the same seeing shows him already everywhere else.
Then Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, by the power of liberated spiritual penetration, manifested a form-body as was fitting, causing all those bodhisattva hosts to see Samantabhadra close beside the Tathāgata, seated upon a lotus-throne here among all the bodhisattva hosts; and they saw him also in the presence of every buddha in every other world, coming from there one after another in continuous succession; and they saw him also, in the presence of all those buddhas, expounding all the bodhisattva's practices, opening up the path of all-knowing wisdom itself, making clear all the bodhisattvas' spiritual penetrations, distinguishing all the bodhisattvas' awesome virtue, and displaying all the buddhas of the three times. At this Universal Eye Bodhisattva and all the bodhisattva hosts, seeing this transformation, leapt up in their hearts and gave rise to great joy; and there was none who did not bow their head to Samantabhadra Bodhisattva and conceive reverence for him, as though seeing all the buddhas of the ten directions.
At that time, through the Buddha's great majestic spiritual power, the power of the bodhisattvas' faith and understanding, and the power of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva's original vows, ten thousand kinds of cloud rained down of themselves — namely, clouds of every kind of flower, of every kind of garland, of every kind of incense, of every kind of powdered incense, of every kind of canopy, of every kind of robe, of every kind of ornament, of every kind of precious jewel, of every kind of burning incense, and of every kind of silken stuff. Ineffably many worlds shook in six ways; heavenly music was performed, and its sound was heard far off through ineffably many worlds; a great radiance was sent forth, and its light illumined ineffably many worlds everywhere, causing the three evil destinies to be entirely removed and ineffably many worlds to be adorned and made pure, and causing ineffably many bodhisattvas to enter the practice of Samantabhadra, ineffably many bodhisattvas to accomplish the practice of Samantabhadra, and ineffably many bodhisattvas to bring Samantabhadra's practices and vows to complete fulfilment and accomplish unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening.
如其所應為現色身 — he manifested a form-body as was fitting. The wording is careful: what appears is fitted to the seers, not a disclosure of what he is. Everything Part 492 said about a body that is the treasury of the dharma-realm still holds; what has changed is that the assembly has taken up his vow, and so there is now something for a body to be fitted to.
從彼次第相續而來 — coming from there one after another in continuous succession. The same figure has him seated here and arriving from everywhere else at once. It is the eighth ground's unmoving body of Part 459 restated at a higher pitch, and it is offered as a thing the assembly simply saw.
What He Abides In
Universal Eye praises him in ten phrases all built on 住, abiding; the Buddha confirms every one and answers with ten merits of his own.
Then Universal Eye Bodhisattva said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! Samantabhadra Bodhisattva is one who abides in great awesome virtue; one who abides without equal; one who abides where none surpasses him; one who abides without regressing; one who abides in sameness; one who abides in the indestructible; one who abides in all differentiated dharmas; one who abides in all undifferentiated dharmas; one who abides where the skillful minds of all beings abide; and one who abides in the samādhi of liberation sovereign in all dharmas." The Buddha said: "So it is, so it is, Universal Eye! It is as you have said. Samantabhadra Bodhisattva has asaṃkhyeyas of pure merits — namely, the merit of unequalled adornment, the merit of measureless jewels, the merit of an inconceivable ocean, the merit of measureless marks, the merit of boundless clouds, the merit that is boundless and beyond praising, the merit of the inexhaustible Dharma, the merit that cannot be spoken, the merit of all the buddhas, and the merit that praising and extolling cannot exhaust."
住一切眾生善巧心所住者 — one who abides where the skillful minds of all beings abide. Among nine phrases about greatness, this one places him inside other people. It is the same move the ninth ground made when it went into the thickets, and it is why the search of Part 492 was bound to fail: they were looking around the room from inside the place they were looking for.
住一切差別法者、住一切無差別法者 — abiding in all differentiated dharmas, and abiding in all undifferentiated dharmas. The two are given as consecutive items in one list, without any attempt to rank them or resolve them. The chapter's whole account of concentration will run on this pairing.
Part 494 Complete
This continues chapter twenty-seven, 十定品, The Ten Concentrations, in fascicle forty. Part 495 has the Tathāgata ask Samantabhadra himself to expound the ten great samādhis for Universal Eye and the assembly, and names them one by one — Universal Light, Wondrous Light, Going in Order to All Buddha-Lands, the Conduct of the Pure Profound Mind, the Treasury of Past Adornments, the Treasury of Wisdom's Radiance, Knowing the Buddha-Adornments of All Worlds, the Differentiated Bodies of Beings, Sovereign Freedom in the Dharma-Realm, and the Unobstructed Wheel.
