Obtained as Consciousness Takes Hold
Ten gifts are conferred on rising from the fifth concentration, and nine of the ten are about speech. The image for how quickly they arrive is embryology: the instant consciousness takes hold in the womb, with nothing in between.
Ten Dharmas of Consecration
Each is listed in four characters, and the sequence moves outward — from not misspeaking, through fearlessness and honesty, to being what beings rely on and what rescues them.
Child of the Buddha! When that bodhisattva mahāsattva rises from this samādhi, they receive from the Tathāgata ten inconceivable dharmas of consecration; and these they obtain, purify, accomplish, enter, realize, fulfil and uphold, comprehending with equanimity that the three spheres are pure. What are the ten? First, eloquence that does not go against the meaning. Second, expounding the Dharma inexhaustibly. Third, instructing in words without fault. Fourth, delight in speaking that is never cut off. Fifth, a mind without fear or dread. Sixth, speech that is always truthful. Seventh, being that on which beings rely. Eighth, rescuing and delivering from the three realms. Ninth, wholesome roots most surpassing. Tenth, taming and guiding by the wondrous Dharma.
Child of the Buddha! These are the ten dharmas of consecration. If a bodhisattva enters this samādhi, then on rising from it they obtain them with nothing in between. It is as when the kalala enters the womb: in the space of a single thought, consciousness takes hold of a birth. A bodhisattva mahāsattva is likewise: rising from this concentration, in the presence of the Tathāgata, in a single thought they obtain these ten dharmas. Child of the Buddha! This is the bodhisattva mahāsattva's skillful knowledge in the fifth great samādhi, knowing the treasury of past adornments.
平等了知三輪清淨 — comprehending with equanimity that the three spheres are pure. The three spheres are giver, receiver and gift — here, the Tathāgata who confers, the bodhisattva who receives, and the consecration itself. The formula empties the transaction at the moment it is described, which is why the list that follows can be read without embarrassment.
如歌羅邏入胎藏時 — as when the kalala enters the womb. The kalala is the embryo in its first week, and the image is chosen for its timing, not its biology: there is no interval between conception and the taking hold. 無間則得, obtained with nothing in between, is the whole point of the comparison.
The Buddhas Who Have Not Yet Come
The sixth samādhi looks forward, and the first thing it knows is names — including the names of buddhas whose prophecy has not yet been given.
"Child of the Buddha! What is the bodhisattva mahāsattva's samādhi of the treasury of wisdom's radiance? Child of the Buddha! That bodhisattva mahāsattva, abiding in this samādhi, can know all the buddhas there are in all the kalpas of all future worlds — those already spoken of and those not yet spoken of, those to whom prophecy has already been given and those to whom it has not — whose many names each differ from the others, namely: numberless names, measureless names, boundless names, names without equal, names that cannot be counted, names that cannot be reckoned, names that cannot be conceived, names that cannot be measured, names that cannot be spoken. They will appear in the world; they will benefit beings; they will be Dharma-kings; they will raise up the buddhas' work; they will expound what brings blessing and benefit; they will praise the meaning of goodness; they will expound the meaning of the bright portion; they will cleanse and cure all evils; they will establish beings in merit; they will open up the truth of ultimate meaning; they will enter the station of consecration; and they will accomplish all-knowing wisdom.
Those Tathāgatas will cultivate perfect practice, rouse perfect vows, enter perfect wisdom, have a perfect assembly, be furnished with perfect adornment, gather perfect merit, awaken to the perfect Dharma, obtain the perfect fruit, be complete in the perfect marks, and accomplish perfect awakening. The names and families and clans of those Tathāgatas, their skillful means, their spiritual penetrations and transformations, their ripening of beings and their entering parinirvāṇa — all of this is entirely known.
若已授記、若未授記 — those to whom prophecy has already been given and those to whom it has not. A buddha's prophecy is the formal announcement of a future awakening; the samādhi is said to know equally those who have received it and those who have not yet. Whatever else it does, it does not depend on the announcement having been made.
當說白分義 — they will expound the meaning of the bright portion. 白分 is the waxing half of the lunar month and, by transfer, the wholesome side of things. The verb throughout this passage is 當, will — a page written entirely in the future tense, about people who do not exist yet.
Part 505 Complete
This continues chapter twenty-seven, 十定品, The Ten Concentrations, in fascicle forty-one. Part 506 continues the sixth samādhi — the kalpas of the future entered in a single thought, counted in the dust-motes of Jambūdvīpa, of the four continents, of the chiliocosms and of buddha-lands beyond speaking — and the ten gateways of upholding that the mind then enters, from being held in mind by the buddhas to turning the wheel of every written letter.
