One Who Had No Teacher
Ten things done quickly, ten seals stamped on all dharmas, and then ten names — of which the first is the boldest: one who has no teacher, because they enter the buddhas' Dharma of themselves.
Ten Swift, and Ten Sealed
The first list is all verbs of speed; the second is a set of ways in which someone is 同 — the same as — the Tathāgatas.
"Child of the Buddha! A bodhisattva mahāsattva abiding in this samādhi accomplishes ten swift dharmas. What are the ten? Namely: swiftly to increase every practice and fulfil the great vows; swiftly to illumine the world with the light of Dharma; swiftly to turn the Dharma-wheel by skillful means and liberate beings; swiftly to display the buddhas' pure lands in accordance with beings' karma; swiftly to enter the ten powers by the wisdom of sameness; swiftly to dwell together with all the Tathāgatas; swiftly to crush and break Māra's armies by the power of great loving-kindness; swiftly to cut off beings' doubts and cause gladness to arise in them; swiftly to display transformations in accordance with their surpassing understanding; and swiftly to purify the worlds with every kind of wondrous Dharma-speech.
Child of the Buddha! This bodhisattva mahāsattva further obtains ten seals of the Dharma, and with them seals all dharmas. What are the ten? First, being the same as all the buddhas of past, future and present in their equal wholesome roots. Second, being the same as the Tathāgatas in obtaining the boundless Dharma-body of wisdom. Third, being the same as the Tathāgatas in abiding in the dharma that is not two. Fourth, being the same as the Tathāgatas in contemplating the measureless domains of the three times as entirely the same. Fifth, being the same as the Tathāgatas in attaining the unobstructed domain that penetrates the dharma-realm. Sixth, being the same as the Tathāgatas in accomplishing the ten powers, so that what they do meets no obstruction. Seventh, being the same as the Tathāgatas in having cut off the two courses forever and abiding in the dharma of non-contention. Eighth, being the same as the Tathāgatas in teaching and transforming beings without ever stopping. Ninth, being the same as the Tathāgatas in contemplating well within skill in wisdom and skill in meaning. Tenth, being the same as the Tathāgatas in being equal and not two with all the buddhas.
法印 — a seal of the Dharma. A seal is what an official presses onto a document to authorize it, and the metaphor keeps its administrative sense here: with these ten a bodhisattva stamps all dharmas, and every one of the ten is a form of sameness with the buddhas. Nothing is added to the dharmas; a warrant is placed on them.
速與一切如來同住 — swiftly to dwell together with all the Tathāgatas. Among nine items about acting on the world at speed, this one is about company. The chapter has been careful with 同住 since Part 507, where dwelling together with a bodhisattva tamed people's minds.
Ten Names
Each name is given with the reason it applies, and the reasons are plainer than the names: knowing that the nature of mind is originally pure, ferrying the world across, waking people up.
"Child of the Buddha! If a bodhisattva mahāsattva accomplishes this gateway of skillful means in the great samādhi of comprehending the buddha-adornments of all worlds, they are one who has no teacher, because they enter all the buddhas' Dharma of themselves and not through another's instruction; they are a true person, because they can awaken all beings; they are one who is pure, because they know that the nature of mind is originally pure; they are foremost, because they can liberate the whole world; they are one who consoles, because they can enlighten all beings; they are one who establishes, because they cause those not yet established in the buddha-lineage to be established; they are one who truly knows, because they enter the gateway of all-knowing wisdom; they are one without differing notions, because what they say is not two; they are one who abides in the treasury of the Dharma, because they vow to comprehend all the buddhas' Dharma; and they are one who can rain down the Dharma-rain, because they satisfy beings entirely according to what their minds delight in.
是無師者,不由他教 — one who has no teacher, not through another's instruction. 無師 is a title of a buddha, who awakens without a teacher; it is applied here to a bodhisattva in this samādhi. And note that the whole chapter is being spoken by Samantabhadra to an assembly who asked to be taught. The title describes what has become of the teaching, not a rejection of it.
是清淨者,知心性本淨故 — one who is pure, because they know that the nature of mind is originally pure. The reason is a knowing rather than a washing. This is the formula that later Chinese Buddhism would build whole schools on, and here it appears as one of ten quiet justifications in a list.
Part 511 Complete
This continues chapter twenty-seven, 十定品, The Ten Concentrations, in fascicle forty-one. Part 512 gives the simile of Śakra, who sets a maṇi jewel in his topknot and by its power surpasses all the Thirty-Three in ten respects, matched to the ten vast treasuries of wisdom a bodhisattva obtains on first attaining this samādhi.
