Ten Titles, Ten Lights, Ten Things Not Done

Three lists in a row, and the third undoes the first two. Having been called a tathāgata, a buddha, a guide and a lamp, and having obtained ten kinds of radiance, this bodhisattva is then described in terms of what is not done — in body, in speech, in mind, and in the spiritual powers.

What Such a One Is Called

Each title is given with the reason it is deserved, and the reasons are all about capacity or service — knowing, being relied on, leading, lighting.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Child of the Buddha! A bodhisattva mahāsattva abiding in this samādhi is praised with ten praiseworthy dharmas. What are the ten? Namely: because they have entered suchness, they are named a Tathāgata; because they are awake to all dharmas, they are named a buddha; because they are praised by the whole world, they are named a Dharma-master; because they know all dharmas, they are named all-knowing; because the whole world takes refuge in them, they are named a place of reliance; because they penetrate the skillful means of all dharmas, they are named a guide; because they lead all beings into the path of all-knowing wisdom, they are named a great guide; because they are a lamp for the whole world, they are named radiance; because their heart's purpose is fulfilled, their benefit accomplished, all that is to be done done, and because abiding in unobstructed wisdom they discriminate and comprehend all dharmas, they are named sovereign in the ten powers; and because they penetrate every wheel of Dharma, they are named one who sees all. These are the ten.

入真如故,名為如來 — because they have entered suchness, they are named a Tathāgata. The etymology is being used: 如來, Tathāgata, is "thus-come", and 真如 is suchness. The title is granted on a grammatical rather than a metaphysical ground, which is the chapter's habitual carefulness about naming.

Radiance, and Then Nothing Done

Ten lights, each with what it is for; and then ten sentences in which the same subject is said to do nothing at all.

Ru-Yi Translation

Child of the Buddha! A bodhisattva mahāsattva abiding in this samādhi further obtains ten illuminating radiances. What are the ten? Namely: they obtain the radiance of all the buddhas, because they are equal with them; the radiance of all worlds, because they can universally adorn and purify them; the radiance of all beings, because they go to all of them and tame them; the radiance of measureless fearlessness, because they take the dharma-realm as their place of expounding; the radiance of non-differentiation, because they know that dharmas have no various natures; the radiance of skillful means, because they realize and enter the limit free of desire in all dharmas; the radiance of what is real, because at the limit free of desire in all dharmas their mind is even; the radiance of transformations pervading every world, because they are supported by the Buddha and never rest; the radiance of good deliberation, because they reach the shore of all the buddhas' sovereign freedom; and the radiance of the suchness of all dharmas, because within a single pore they expound everything well. These are the ten.

佛子!菩薩摩訶薩住此三昧,復得十種無所作。何者為十?所謂:身業無所作,語業無所作,意業無所作,神通無所作,了法無性無所作,知業不壞無所作,無差別智無所作,無生起智無所作,知法無滅無所作,隨順於文不壞於義無所作。是為十。

Ru-Yi Translation

Child of the Buddha! A bodhisattva mahāsattva abiding in this samādhi further obtains ten kinds of nothing-done. What are the ten? Namely: nothing done in the works of body; nothing done in the works of speech; nothing done in the works of mind; nothing done in spiritual penetration; nothing done in comprehending that dharmas have no nature; nothing done in knowing that karma is not destroyed; nothing done in undifferentiating wisdom; nothing done in the wisdom of non-origination; nothing done in knowing that dharmas do not cease; and nothing done in according with the letter while not destroying the meaning. These are the ten.

知業不壞無所作 — nothing done in knowing that karma is not destroyed. Among nine items about emptiness and non-origination, this one insists that karma holds. The pairing is deliberate: the eighth ground's 無功用, effortlessness, is being restated here as 無所作, and neither of them means that what people do stops mattering.

隨順於文不壞於義 — according with the letter while not destroying the meaning. The last of the ten, and it describes exactly what a translator does. It is placed among things in which nothing is done, which is to say that following the words faithfully is not an operation performed on the meaning.

Part 517 Complete

This continues chapter twenty-seven, 十定品, The Ten Concentrations, in fascicle forty-two. Part 518 gives the ten kinds of exchange this samādhi commands — one and many, coarse and fine, large and small, with body and without — and then the conjuror whose spell is only a sound and yet produces sights, sounds, smells, tastes and touches, and the asura king who leads an army into the hole in a lotus-stalk.
