Entered in a Single Pore

The eighth concentration closes with far shores of spiritual power, the last of which needs no days or years at all. Then the ninth opens, and it is entered nowhere exotic — in one's own eye, in one's own ear, in a single pore of one's own skin.

The Remaining Far Shores

Knowing samādhi from the inside, entering the Tathāgata's domain and making vows there, conjuring a buddha who turns a wheel, handling the secret phrases, and finally dispensing with the calendar.

The far shore of the spiritual penetration that knows with sovereign freedom the coarse and fine, the entering and the rising, and the differing aspects of all samādhis; the far shore of the spiritual penetration that can enter the Tathāgata's domain with courage and there raise up great vows; the far shore of the spiritual penetration that can conjure a buddha who conjures the turning of the Dharma-wheel, taming beings, causing the buddha-lineage to be born in them, bringing them into the buddha-vehicle and quickly to accomplishment; the far shore of the spiritual penetration that can comprehend all the ineffably many secret phrases and turn the Dharma-wheel, so that a hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of ineffably ineffable dharma-gateways are all made pure; and the far shore of the spiritual penetration that, without recourse to day or night or year or month or the number of kalpas, can in a single thought display all three times. These are the ten. Child of the Buddha! This is called the bodhisattva mahāsattva's skillful knowledge in the eighth great samādhi, the differentiated bodies of all beings.

不假晝夜年月劫數 — without recourse to day or night or year or month or the number of kalpas. The last of the ten dispenses with the whole apparatus of reckoning that the chapter has been piling up since Part 502, where the durations of absorption ran from an instant to kalpas ineffably ineffable. Nothing is counted; the three times are simply shown.

The Ninth: In the Eye, in a Pore

Where this samādhi is entered is stated first and is startlingly close to home; and what is then known runs outward from it to worlds beyond counting.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Child of the Buddha! What is the bodhisattva mahāsattva's samādhi of sovereign freedom in the dharma-realm? Child of the Buddha! This bodhisattva mahāsattva enters samādhi in their own sense-field of the eye, and so on up to the sense-field of the mind, and it is named sovereign freedom in the dharma-realm. The bodhisattva enters this samādhi within each single pore of their own body, and naturally comes to know the worlds, to know the dharmas of the worlds, to know the world-systems, to know koṭis of nayutas of worlds, to know asaṃkhyeyas of worlds, and to know worlds as numerous as the dust-motes of ineffably many buddha-lands. They see that in every world a buddha has appeared, and that the assemblies of bodhisattvas fill them entirely — radiant and pure, wholly good and unmixed, vastly adorned, and ornamented with every kind of jewel.

Ru-Yi Translation

There the bodhisattva, for a kalpa, or a hundred kalpas, a thousand kalpas, a koṭi of kalpas, a hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of kalpas; for numberless kalpas, measureless kalpas, boundless kalpas, kalpas without equal, kalpas that cannot be counted, that cannot be reckoned, that cannot be conceived, that cannot be measured, that cannot be spoken, kalpas ineffably ineffable, and kalpas as numerous as the dust-motes of ineffably ineffable buddha-lands — cultivates the bodhisattva's practice and never rests. And through such measureless kalpas they abide in this samādhi, entering it and rising from it, accomplishing worlds and taming beings, comprehending the whole dharma-realm and knowing universally the three times, expounding the dharmas and displaying great spiritual penetration, with every kind of skillful means, unattached and unobstructed. And because they have attained sovereign freedom in the dharma-realm, they discriminate the eye well, discriminate the ear well, discriminate the nose well, discriminate the tongue well, discriminate the body well, and discriminate the mind well — and all such differences of every kind they discriminate well, out to their farthest limit.

於自眼處乃至意處入三昧 — enters samādhi in their own sense-field of the eye, and so on up to the mind. The samādhi named for freedom in the whole dharma-realm is entered in the six ordinary sense-fields, and then in a single pore. Nothing is transcended to get there; the door is where one already is.

善分別眼,善分別耳 — they discriminate the eye well, discriminate the ear well. Having attained freedom in the dharma-realm, what the bodhisattva does is discriminate — the very activity the earlier samādhis kept refusing. The refusal was of clinging, not of distinguishing, and here the distinction is made plain.

Part 520 Complete

This continues chapter twenty-seven, 十定品, The Ten Concentrations, in fascicle forty-two. Part 521 continues the ninth samādhi, and then the chapter moves toward the tenth and last of the ten great concentrations, the unobstructed wheel.
