Ten Oceans, Ten Excellences

All those buddhas hold this bodhisattva in mind, and what they hold them in mind for is listed — a boundless body, a mind that meets no obstruction, faculties made keen. Then ten things obtained as oceans, and ten ways of standing out, of which the eighth is quietly the most interesting.

What They Are Held in Mind For

Ten results, and most of them are cognitive rather than miraculous: not forgetting, deciding, taking things in, understanding clearly, becoming quicker.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Child of the Buddha! When a bodhisattva mahāsattva abides in this samādhi of sovereign freedom in the dharma-realm, the Tathāgatas of each of the ten directions bearing names as numerous as the dust-motes of ten thousand asaṃkhyeyas of buddha-lands — and under each single name buddhas again as numerous as the dust-motes of ten thousand asaṃkhyeyas of buddha-lands — hold them in mind all at once: causing this bodhisattva to obtain a boundless body; causing this bodhisattva to obtain an unobstructed mind; causing this bodhisattva to obtain unforgetting recollection of all dharmas; causing this bodhisattva to obtain decisive wisdom in all dharmas; causing this bodhisattva to grow quicker and sharper, able to take in all dharmas; causing this bodhisattva to comprehend all dharmas clearly; causing this bodhisattva's faculties to be keen and their skill in the dharmas of spiritual penetration complete; causing this bodhisattva's domain to be unobstructed, so that they travel the dharma-realm and never rest; causing this bodhisattva to obtain unobstructed wisdom, ultimately pure; and causing this bodhisattva, by the power of spiritual penetration, to display the accomplishing of buddhahood in every world.

令此菩薩轉更聰敏 — causing this bodhisattva to grow quicker and sharper. 聰敏 is what one says of a bright student. Among boundless bodies and unobstructed minds, the buddhas' attention is described as making someone better at learning.

Oceans, and Standing Out

Ten things had as oceans, each with the reason it is one; and then ten ways of surpassing, ending with a list of freedoms.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Child of the Buddha! A bodhisattva mahāsattva abiding in this samādhi obtains ten oceans. What are the ten? Namely: they obtain the ocean of the buddhas, because they behold them all; the ocean of beings, because they tame them all; the ocean of dharmas, because with wisdom they comprehend them all; the ocean of lands, because by a spiritual penetration that has no nature and does nothing they go to them all; the ocean of merit, because all their practice is brought to fullness; the ocean of spiritual penetration, because they can display it widely and awaken others; the ocean of the faculties, because they know well all their many differences; the ocean of minds, because they know the measureless and variously differing minds of all beings; the ocean of practices, because by the power of vows they bring them all to fullness; and the ocean of vows, because they cause them all to be accomplished and forever pure.

Ru-Yi Translation

Child of the Buddha! When a bodhisattva mahāsattva has obtained these ten oceans, they further obtain ten excellences. What are the ten? First, among all beings they are the very first. Second, among all the gods they are the most extraordinary. Third, among all the Brahmā kings they are the most sovereignly free. Fourth, in all the worlds they are stained by nothing. Fifth, nothing in any world can outshine them. Sixth, no Māra can confuse or trouble them. Seventh, they enter every destiny universally without hindrance. Eighth, taking birth in place after place, they know it is not solid. Ninth, in all the buddhas' Dharma they attain sovereign freedom. Tenth, every spiritual penetration they can display.

處處受生知不堅固 — taking birth in place after place, they know it is not solid. Among nine items about superiority and freedom, this one is a piece of ordinary insight, and it does not exempt anyone from being born. What distinguishes such a person is not that they stop taking birth but what they know while doing it.

得諸剎海,以無性無作神通皆往詣故 — the ocean of lands, because by a spiritual penetration that has no nature and does nothing they go to them all. The reason given for reaching everywhere is a power described entirely by negations. Nothing is being exerted, and the arriving is complete.

Part 522 Complete

This continues chapter twenty-seven, 十定品, The Ten Concentrations, in fascicle forty-two. Part 523 gives the ten powers with which such a bodhisattva cultivates practice in the realm of beings — courage, diligence, non-attachment, stillness, the power to move with the grain and against it — and the long catalogue of names these powers are also called by.
