Awakened by No One Else
Having entered the Unobstructed Wheel Samādhi, the bodhisattva is now described not by what he displays but by what he is: realized through his own wisdom rather than taught, seen with the buddha-eye, gathered as the treasury every buddha beholds, and pure of himself as the lotus he is compared to.
Entered by His Own Wisdom
After the cascade of jewels and buddhas that closed Part 531, the text turns from vision to nature: what kind of knowing does a bodhisattva have, once he abides in this samādhi?
Sons of the Buddha! When the bodhisattva-mahāsattva abides in this samādhi, he manifests spiritual powers, realms, and measureless transformations such as these, knowing them all to be like a magical illusion and remaining unattached to them, and abides in boundless, ineffable dharmas. His self-nature is pure; it is the true mark of the dharma-realm and the lineage of the tathāgatas. Within this unobstructed limit there is no going and no coming, neither earlier nor later; it is profound and without bottom, attained through direct realization, entered by his own wisdom and not awakened to through another. His mind is unconfused and free of discrimination. He is praised by all buddhas of the past, future, and present; he flows forth from the power of all buddhas and enters the state of all buddhas.
His essential nature is true to reality. With the pure eye he directly realizes it; with the eye of wisdom he universally sees it; he perfects the buddha-eye and becomes a bright lamp for the world; he moves through the realm known to the eye of wisdom, and is broadly able to open and reveal its subtle and wondrous dharma-gateways. He accomplishes the mind of awakening and advances toward becoming a supreme person; in every realm he meets no obstruction. He enters the lineage of wisdom and gives birth to every wisdom; he leaves behind the worldly dharma of birth yet manifests the taking of birth, with spiritual powers and transformations, taming beings through skillful means.
不由他悟 — not awakened to through another. Part 495 named 無礙輪大三昧, the Unobstructed Wheel Samādhi, as the tenth and last of the ten great samādhis Samantabhadra was asked to teach, and Part 529 glossed 無礙輪 as the unobstructed wheel — a Dharma-wheel nothing stops. Here the wheel's freedom is traced back to its source: this knowing is 現量, direct realization, not a report of someone else's.
入智種性出生諸智 — he enters the lineage of wisdom and gives birth to every wisdom. 種性, lineage or seed-nature, is the same word used for the tathāgata-lineage two sentences earlier — wisdom here is not acquired but grown from what he already is.
A Treasury Beheld by All Buddhas
The description keeps building without a change of subject, moving from purity of eye and mind toward the two images that will carry the rest of the portrait — an ocean, and a lotus.
All of this is nothing but skillful means. His merit, understanding, and aspiration are all pure; utterly subtle and wondrous, they are complete and perfect. His wisdom is vast like empty space, and he is able to well observe the realms of the noble ones. His faith, practice, and the power of his vows are firm and unmoving; his merit is inexhaustible and praised throughout the world.
He is the treasury beheld by all buddhas; abiding in great bodhi, he dwells in the ocean of all wisdom, gathering many wondrous jewels as one of great wisdom. Like a lotus flower whose nature is pure of itself, all beings who see him give rise to joy and all receive benefit. The light of his wisdom shines everywhere; he beholds measureless buddhas and purifies all dharmas; his conduct is tranquil, and in the buddha-dharmas he is ultimately unobstructed.
Constantly, through skillful means, abiding within the meritorious practice of buddha-bodhi, he comes forth into being; endowed with bodhisattva wisdom, he is foremost among bodhisattvas, and all buddhas together hold him in mindful protection. He gains the buddhas' awesome spiritual power and accomplishes the buddha's dharma-body; the power of his mindfulness is beyond conception — his mind rests upon a single object, yet grasps at nothing; his conduct is vast, without mark, and unobstructed, equal to the dharma-realm, measureless and boundless.
The bodhi he has realized is like empty space, without boundary, and nothing binds or attaches him. In all the worlds he universally brings benefit, flowing from the wholesome roots of the ocean of all wisdom, and is able to penetrate measureless realms entirely. He has already well accomplished the pure practice of giving; abiding in the bodhisattva mind, he purifies the bodhisattva lineage, and is able to bring forth, in accord with all things, the bodhi of every buddha. In all the buddha-dharmas he attains skillful mastery, endowed with subtle and wondrous conduct, and accomplishes firm and unshakable power.
自性清淨 — self-nature is pure. The same four characters that opened Part 532, said of the bodhisattva himself, return here said of a lotus: 猶如蓮華自性清淨. The comparison is not decorative — the text has already told us the bodhisattva's nature is pure of itself, and now shows what that looks like from outside, in a flower unstained by the water it grows from.
於境一緣而無所緣 — his mind rests upon a single object, yet grasps at nothing. A concentration this settled does not fix on anything to hold — the one-pointedness of 三昧 without the clinging that 緣, conditioned grasping, ordinarily implies.
Part 532 Complete
This continues chapter twenty-seven, 十定品, The Ten Concentrations, in fascicle forty-three. Part 533 turns to what this bodhisattva's power means for beings who can scarcely hear of it — 一切諸佛自在威神,眾生難聞 — as the portrait of the Unobstructed Wheel Samādhi continues toward its close.
