What Beings Can Scarcely Hear

The portrait of the bodhisattva in the Unobstructed Wheel Samādhi continues and then turns: from description to a direct address naming, one by one, exactly what this samādhi does — and closing on the claim that toward every realm it attains nothing at all.

What Beings Can Scarcely Hear

Part 532 closed on power beyond conception; Part 533 opens on the same power seen from the outside — what it looks like to a being who cannot hear it, next to what it looks like from within, where it has already been entered.

Ru-Yi Translation

The sovereign, awesome spiritual power of all buddhas is something beings can scarcely hear of, yet the bodhisattva knows it fully, entering the gate of non-duality and abiding in the signless dharma. Though he has forever relinquished every mark, he is still able to expound the manifold dharmas at length, according to what each being's mind delights in and wishes to understand, taming them all and making them all rejoice.

Ru-Yi Translation

The dharma-realm is his body, undivided by discrimination; the realm of his wisdom cannot be exhausted. His resolve is ever courageous, his mind is ever impartial. He sees to the very limit of every buddha's merit and comprehends the distinct order of every kalpa; he reveals every dharma, abides securely in every land, adorns and purifies every buddha-land, and displays everywhere the light of the true dharma; he expounds every buddha-dharma of the past, future, and present, and shows where the bodhisattvas dwell.

入不二門住無相法;雖復永捨一切諸相,而能廣說種種諸法 — entering the gate of non-duality and abiding in the signless dharma, though he has relinquished every mark, he still expounds the manifold dharmas at length. The same shape as Part 532's 不由他悟, self-realized rather than taught: here it is teaching itself that survives the relinquishing of every mark, rather than being cancelled by it.

Born Within Every Realm of Being

The portrait keeps naming what he is before it names what he does — a lamp, a guest in the presence of buddhas, a mind unmoved toward any dharma.

Ru-Yi Translation

He is a bright lamp for the world, giving rise to every wholesome root; forever leaving the world behind, he is constantly born in the presence of buddhas, attaining the buddha's wisdom, clear and foremost. All buddhas together embrace and receive him; he has already entered the ranks of the buddhas yet to come. He comes forth from true spiritual friends, and everything he aspires to and seeks meets with success.

Ru-Yi Translation

Endowed with great, awesome virtue, he abides in an ever-ascending resolve; whatever he hears he is able to expound well, and he also reveals the wholesome roots for hearing the dharma. He abides in the wheel of ultimate reality, his mind meeting no obstruction toward any dharma; he does not abandon his practices, yet is free of discrimination, his mind never wavering toward any dharma. He attains the bright wisdom that extinguishes every darkness of delusion, able to illuminate all buddha-dharmas clearly; without destroying the realms of existence, he takes birth within them, fully knowing every one of those realms.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

不壞諸有而生其中 — without destroying the realms of existence, he takes birth within them. 諸有, the realms of existence, is the ordinary Buddhist term for the wheel of birth-and-death itself. He does not need to abolish it to be free within it — the line quietly refuses the reading where liberation means the world has to go.

This Attains Nothing at All

The passage names the paradox before it states it outright — words that never break the wordless dharma, wisdom as the bridge to a wisdom already possessed — and then the address changes register entirely, into a list spoken straight to "Sons of the Buddha."

Ru-Yi Translation

From the very beginning he has never stirred, yet his deeds of body, speech, and mind are all boundless; though he speaks in measureless words according to worldly convention, he never departs from the dharma that is free of words. He enters deeply into the ocean of the buddha, knowing that all dharmas have only provisional names, and toward every realm he is bound by nothing and attached to nothing; understanding that all dharmas are empty and without anything at all, the practices he cultivates arise from the dharma-realm itself, like empty space — without mark, without form.

Entering the dharma-realm deeply, he expounds the teaching in accord with beings; from a single gateway of objects he gives rise to all wisdom. Contemplating the ground of the ten powers, he cultivates and studies through wisdom, wisdom itself the bridge to all-knowing wisdom; with the eye of wisdom he sees the dharma without obstruction, skillfully entering every ground and knowing its manifold meanings, so that every single dharma-gate becomes clear to him, and there is not one great vow he fails to fulfill.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Sons of the Buddha! By means of this, the bodhisattva-mahāsattva reveals the undifferentiated nature of all tathāgatas. This is the gateway of unobstructed skillful means; this gives rise to assemblies of bodhisattvas; this dharma is nothing other than the realm of samādhi; this makes possible a courageous advance into all-knowing wisdom; this opens and reveals the gateways of every samādhi; this allows unobstructed entry into every land everywhere; this is able to tame every being; this makes it possible to abide at the limit where no being is found; this reveals every buddha-dharma; and toward every realm, this attains nothing at all.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

此於境界皆無所得 — toward every realm, this attains nothing at all. Ten lines beginning 此, "this," listing what the samādhi accomplishes — assemblies gathered, beings tamed, every buddha-dharma revealed — and the list ends by taking all of it back. Nothing named in the nine lines before it was ever something held onto.

薩婆若 — all-knowing wisdom, sarvajñā transliterated rather than translated in Part 495's note; here it appears twice within a few lines, once as the destination wisdom serves as a bridge toward, once as what a courageous advance enters. The text treats 一切智 and 薩婆若 as the same attainment named twice.

Part 533 Complete

This continues chapter twenty-seven, 十定品, The Ten Concentrations, in fascicle forty-three. Part 534 opens a long run of paired lines built on the same hinge as this part's close — 雖知...而... , "though he knows... yet he..." — each one holding emptiness and speech, sameness and difference, together without contradiction.
