Ten Gifts from the Buddhas of Every Direction
The eleven-part "in this way" that closed Part 538 answers itself here: the instant the bodhisattva enters this samādhi, buddhas beyond counting appear before him in every direction, each bestowing one gift — and the bodhisattva who receives all ten becomes, for the world, a sun, a moon, a mountain, an ocean, a lamp.
Ten Gifts from the Buddhas of Every Direction
Each gift arrives already paired with what it is for — not simply given, but given so that something specific becomes possible.
佛子!菩薩摩訶薩入普賢菩薩所住如是大智慧三昧時,十方各有不可說不可說國土,一一國土各有不可說不可說佛剎微塵數如來名號,一一名號各有不可說不可說佛剎微塵數諸佛而現其前,與如來念力,令不忘失如來境界;與一切法究竟慧,令入一切智;與知一切法種種義決定慧,令受持一切佛法趣入無礙;與無上佛菩提,令入一切智開悟法界;與菩薩究竟慧,令得一切法光明,無諸黑闇;
Sons of the Buddha! When the bodhisattva-mahāsattva enters this great wisdom samādhi in which Samantabhadra dwells, in each of the ten directions there are ineffably ineffable lands; in each and every land there are tathāgata-names as numerous as the dust-motes of ineffably ineffable buddha-lands; and for each and every name there appear before him buddhas as numerous as the dust-motes of ineffably ineffable buddha-lands — bestowing the tathāgatas' own power of mindfulness, causing him never to forget the tathāgatas' realm; bestowing ultimate wisdom regarding all dharmas, causing him to enter all-knowing wisdom; bestowing the decisive wisdom that knows the manifold meanings of all dharmas, causing him to uphold every buddha-dharma and enter it without obstruction; bestowing unsurpassed buddha-bodhi, causing him to enter all-knowing wisdom and awaken to the dharma-realm; bestowing the bodhisattva's ultimate wisdom, causing him to attain the light of every dharma, free of all darkness;
bestowing the bodhisattva's non-regressing wisdom, causing him to know the right time and the wrong time, taming beings with skillful means; bestowing the bodhisattva's unobstructed eloquence, causing him to awaken to boundless dharmas and expound them inexhaustibly; bestowing the power of spiritual transformation, causing him to manifest ineffably ineffable distinct bodies of boundless and varied form to awaken beings; bestowing a perfect voice, causing him to manifest ineffably ineffable distinct sounds and manifold words to awaken beings; and bestowing the power by which nothing is wasted, causing every being who sees his form or hears his teaching to attain accomplishment, with not one passing by in vain.
與不唐捐力 — bestowing the power by which nothing is wasted. The tenth and final gift, and the one that guarantees the other nine were not given in vain either: every being who so much as sees this bodhisattva's form or hears him teach reaches accomplishment. Part 536 compared a bodhisattva's giving to a wish-fulfilling jewel; this gift is what keeps that jewel's giving from ever landing on empty ground.
Sun, Moon, Mountain, Ocean, Lamp
Having received the ten gifts, the bodhisattva is described through what he becomes for others — five images in a row, four of them about light and depth, one about simply not moving.
Sons of the Buddha! Because the bodhisattva-mahāsattva has thus fulfilled the practice of Samantabhadra, he attains the power of the tathāgatas, purifies the path of release, and fulfills all-knowing wisdom; with unobstructed eloquence and spiritual transformation he ultimately tames all beings. Endowed with the buddhas' own awesome virtue, purifying the practice of Samantabhadra and abiding in the path of Samantabhadra, to the very end of the future, wishing to tame all beings, he turns every buddha's sublime and wondrous Dharma-wheel. Why is this so? Sons of the Buddha! This bodhisattva-mahāsattva, having accomplished such supreme great vows and bodhisattva practices, becomes a dharma-teacher for the whole world, becomes a sun of dharma for the whole world, becomes a moon of wisdom for the whole world; becomes the king of Mount Sumeru for the whole world, towering aloft, firm and unmoving; becomes a shoreless ocean of wisdom for the whole world; becomes a bright lamp of the true dharma for the whole world, universally illuminating without limit, continuing without break; reveals boundless and pure merit for all beings, causing them all to abide securely in wholesome roots of merit; according with all-knowing wisdom and with great vows equal to every buddha's, he cultivates the vast practice of Samantabhadra, ever able to encourage and inspire measureless beings, abiding in ineffably ineffable vast samādhis of practice, and manifesting great sovereign freedom.
則為一切世間須彌山王,嶷然高出,堅固不動 — becomes the king of Mount Sumeru for the whole world, towering aloft, firm and unmoving. Set among four images about radiating or holding light — sun, moon, ocean, lamp — the mountain does something none of the others do: it simply does not move. A world lit from every side still needs one thing in it that stays put.
Part 539 Complete
This continues chapter twenty-seven, 十定品, The Ten Concentrations, in fascicle forty-three. Part 540 opens with a further list of what this bodhisattva has attained — 獲如是智,證如是法 — before naming ten great treasuries of dharma his mind constantly abides in, 十大法藏, beginning with holding all buddhas and all buddha-dharmas in mindfulness.
