Ten Great Treasuries of Dharma
A summary of attainments leads into ten treasuries the bodhisattva's mind constantly abides in — recollection, compassion, the equal bodhi of every buddha — and closes on a plain admission: though he abides in ultimate reality, he still speaks the way the world speaks.
Ten Great Treasuries of Dharma
Before naming the treasuries themselves, the text gathers everything the bodhisattva has already attained into one sentence — wisdom, spiritual power, liberation, freedom — as if clearing space for what comes next.
Sons of the Buddha! This bodhisattva-mahāsattva has obtained such wisdom, realized such dharma, and abides securely and with discerning clarity in such dharma; has attained such spiritual power, abides in such a realm, manifests such spiritual transformation, and gives rise to such spiritual faculties; constantly abiding in great compassion, constantly benefiting beings, revealing to them the tranquil and true path, establishing the great banner of light of merit and wisdom; he realizes inconceivable liberation, abides in the liberation of all-knowing wisdom, and reaches the far shore of the buddhas' own liberation; he has already accomplished the study of the skillful gateways of inconceivable liberation, enters the distinct gateways of the dharma-realm without confusion, sports freely and sovereignly amid Samantabhadra's ineffably ineffable samādhis, and abides in the wisdom of the lion's vigorous stride, his mind unobstructed.
His mind constantly abides in ten great treasuries of dharma. What are these ten? They are: abiding in the mindful recollection of all buddhas; abiding in the mindful recollection of all buddha-dharmas; abiding in the great compassion that tames all beings; abiding in the wisdom that manifests inconceivable, pure lands; abiding in the decisive understanding that penetrates deeply into the buddhas' own realm; abiding in the bodhi of equal marks shared by all buddhas of the past, future, and present; abiding at the limit that is unobstructed and unattached; abiding in the signless nature of all dharmas; abiding in the equal wholesome roots of all buddhas of the past, future, and present; abiding in the wisdom that leads the undifferentiated bodily, verbal, and mental deeds of all tathāgatas of the past, future, and present throughout the dharma-realm; and abiding in the contemplation by which the birth, going-forth, arrival at the seat of awakening, attainment of perfect enlightenment, turning of the Dharma-wheel, and entry into parinirvāṇa of all buddhas of the three times all enter within a single instant. Sons of the Buddha! These ten great treasuries of dharma are vast and immeasurable — uncountable, immeasurable, inconceivable, ineffable, inexhaustible, hard to bear — and no worldly wisdom is able to describe them fully.
住師子奮迅智 — abiding in the wisdom of the lion's vigorous stride. Part 492 uses the same phrase, 師子奮迅, for the samādhi that keeps Samantabhadra himself unseen even by bodhisattvas searching directly for him. Here it names a quality of mind rather than a hiding place, but the borrowed image is the same one.
十大法藏…何者為十 — ten great treasuries of dharma… what are these ten? Counted against the list that follows, the enumeration that CBETA's text gives runs to eleven items rather than ten. This translation keeps the count exactly as the source presents it rather than silently merging two of the eleven to make the arithmetic come out even.
Following Worldly Speech
The passage closes where Part 534's forty-one paradoxes ended — on a bodhisattva who does not need his own attainment cancelled by the way he still speaks.
Sons of the Buddha! This bodhisattva-mahāsattva has already reached the far shore of every practice of Samantabhadra, realizing pure dharmas, his resolve and strength vast; he reveals measureless wholesome roots to beings, increases every bodhisattva power, in thought after thought fulfills every bodhisattva merit, accomplishes every bodhisattva practice, attains every buddha's dhāraṇī-dharma, and upholds all that every buddha has spoken. Though he constantly abides in true suchness and ultimate reality, he nevertheless follows every worldly manner of speech, manifesting the taming of all beings. Why is this so? Because when the bodhisattva-mahāsattva abides in this samādhi, the dharma is simply such.
法如是故 — because the dharma is simply such. The reason given for following worldly speech while abiding in ultimate reality is no reason at all in the ordinary sense — not a further fact that explains the paradox away, but a statement that this is simply the shape reality takes. Part 534 gave forty-one versions of the same non-explanation; this is the shortest one yet.
Part 540 Complete
This continues chapter twenty-seven, 十定品, The Ten Concentrations, in fascicle forty-three. Part 541 continues with what this samādhi grants the bodhisattva — vast wisdom of every buddha, skillful eloquence, entry into every samādhi — building toward the close of the tenth and final of the Ten Concentrations.
