Part 553 of the collection · Fascicle 44 of 80 · 十通品第二十八 · T279

The Wisdom of All Dharmas

After eight penetrations reaching outward — into minds, into the past and future, into every sound and every color — the ninth turns inward on language itself, naming nearly thirty pairs of opposites that no dharma falls into either side of, before explaining how a teacher can still speak.

Neither This Nor Not This

Where the earlier penetrations named what a bodhisattva can know or reach, the ninth is built almost entirely out of what cannot be said of any dharma at all.

Ru-Yi Translation

Sons of the Buddha! Through the penetration of the wisdom of all dharmas, the bodhisattva-mahāsattva knows that all dharmas have no name and no inherent nature; no coming and no going; neither different nor not different; neither manifold nor not manifold; neither dual nor non-dual; without self, without comparison; unborn, unceasing; unmoving, indestructible; neither real nor unreal; of a single mark, yet without mark; neither nonexistent nor existent; neither dharma nor non-dharma; not following the conventional, yet not failing to follow it; neither karma nor non-karma; neither karmic result nor non-result; neither conditioned nor unconditioned; neither ultimate truth nor not ultimate truth; neither a path nor not a path; neither release nor non-release; neither measured nor measureless; neither worldly nor transcending the world; neither arisen from causes nor not arisen from causes; neither fixed nor not fixed; neither accomplished nor not accomplished; neither emerging nor not emerging; neither discriminated nor not discriminated; and neither in accord with principle nor not in accord with principle.

非X、非非X — neither X nor not-X, repeated for nearly twenty pairs. The formula moves from concrete opposites — coming and going, self and comparison — toward the sūtra's own technical vocabulary: conditioned and unconditioned, ultimate truth, dependent origination. No category the tradition has built for talking about reality survives being applied to a single dharma without qualification.

Speaking What Cannot Be Spoken

Having denied every category, the passage turns immediately to a bodhisattva who still teaches — and explains how that is possible without contradiction.

Ru-Yi Translation

This bodhisattva does not grasp at conventional truth, does not abide in ultimate truth, does not discriminate among dharmas, does not establish written words; according with the nature of quiescence, he yet does not abandon a single vow — seeing the meaning, knowing the dharma, he raises and spreads clouds of dharma, pouring down the rain of dharma. Though he knows that true reality cannot be spoken of, with skillful means and inexhaustible eloquence he expounds it in sequence, according with the dharma and according with the meaning; attaining skillful mastery in speaking and expounding all dharmas, his great loving-kindness and great compassion already pure, he is able to give rise to written words from within dharmas entirely free of words, according with the dharma and the meaning without contradiction, teaching that all dharmas arise entirely from dependent origination — though there is speech, there is no attachment to it. Expounding all dharmas with inexhaustible eloquence, distinguishing and establishing them, opening, revealing, showing, and guiding, he causes the nature of every dharma to become fully clear and evident, severing every net of doubt, all made pure. Though gathering in beings, he does not abandon the truth; in the non-dual dharma he never regresses; he is ever able to expound unobstructed dharma-gateways, and with manifold wondrous sounds, according with beings' minds, universally rains the rain of dharma, never missing the right time. This is called the bodhisattva-mahāsattva's ninth spiritual penetration, that of the wisdom of all dharmas.

能於一切離文字法中出生文字 — able to give rise to written words from within dharmas entirely free of words. The same shape as Part 534's forty-one paradoxes, 雖知...而..., "though he knows... yet he...", now aimed squarely at language itself: words are not smuggled in around the emptiness of dharmas, they are produced directly out of it. The next clause states the resolution plainly — 雖有言說而無所著, though there is speech, there is no attachment to it.

Part 553 Complete

This continues chapter twenty-eight, 十通品, The Ten Kinds of Spiritual Penetration, in fascicle forty-four. Part 554 opens the tenth and final penetration, 一切法滅盡三昧智通, the wisdom of the samādhi of the cessation of all dharmas — entered in thought after thought, without the bodhisattva ever once regressing from the path or abandoning a single being.
