Lights That Awaken Wisdom, Giving, and Forbearance

The sequence of lights continues: nine more, each named for what it awakens and traced to the practice that produced it — wisdom that understands emptiness, generosity that dissolves stinginess, the precepts that cool a transgressor's own fever, forbearance amid violence, diligence against indolence, and stillness amid a scattered mind.

Nine More Lights

From wisdom and the emptiness of every dharma, through generosity, the precepts, forbearance, and diligence, to a stillness free of scattered mind and a wisdom that penetrates dependent origination — each light named, its awakening described, and its own cause named in turn.

Ru-Yi Translation

"He further radiates a light named 'Endowed with Wisdom'; this light is able to awaken the whole multitude, causing them, within a single dharma and a single thought, to understand entirely the immeasurable gates of the Dharma.
Distinguishing the Dharma for the sake of every living being, and resolving its true and real meaning decisively, skillfully expounding the Dharma's own meaning without any deficiency at all — and it is for this reason that this light comes to be attained.

He further radiates a light named 'Lamp of Wisdom'; this light is able to awaken the whole multitude, causing them to know that the nature of living beings is empty and tranquil, and that every dharma there is has nothing at all to it.
Expounding that every dharma is empty and without any master, like an illusion, like a flickering flame, like the moon reflected in water, even down to being just like a dream, a shadow, or a reflected image — and it is for this reason that this light comes to be attained.

He further radiates a light named 'Sovereignty of Dharma'; this light is able to awaken the whole multitude, causing them to attain the inexhaustible dhāraṇī, holding entirely every one of the Buddha's own dharmas.
Reverently making offering to those who uphold the Dharma, attending upon and protecting every worthy and sage, and giving every kind of Dharma-gift to living beings — and it is for this reason that this light comes to be attained.

He further radiates a light named 'Able to Give Up'; this light awakens living beings who are stingy, causing them to know that wealth and treasure are entirely impermanent, forever delighting in generous giving with a mind free of attachment.
A stingy mind, hard to tame, is thereby tamed; understanding wealth to be like a dream, like a drifting cloud, increasing and growing a pure mind of generous giving — and it is for this reason that this light comes to be attained.

He further radiates a light named 'Removing Fever'; this light is able to awaken those who transgress the precepts, universally causing them to receive and uphold the pure precepts, giving rise to the resolve and the vow to realize the path that needs no teacher.
Urging and guiding living beings to receive and uphold the precepts, so that the ten wholesome courses of action become entirely pure, and further causing them to give rise to the mind directed toward bodhi — and it is for this reason that this light comes to be attained.

He further radiates a light named 'Adornment of Forbearance'; this light awakens those given to anger and hatred, causing them to remove their anger and leave behind self-conceit, forever delighting in the gentle Dharma of forbearance.
Though living beings are violent and evil, hard to bear with, for the sake of bodhi his own mind remains unmoved, forever delighting in extolling the merit of forbearance — and it is for this reason that this light comes to be attained.

He further radiates a light named 'Valiant'; this light awakens the indolent and slothful, causing them to forever, within the Three Jewels, revere and make offering without any weariness or discontent.
If they forever, within the Three Jewels, revere and make offering without any weariness or discontent, they are thereby able to transcend the domain of the four māras, swiftly accomplishing the Buddha's own unsurpassed bodhi.
Urging and transforming living beings to press forward, forever diligently making offering to the Three Jewels, single-mindedly guarding and protecting the Dharma when it is about to disappear — and it is for this reason that this light comes to be attained.

He further radiates a light named 'Tranquility'; this light is able to awaken those of scattered mind, causing them to stay far removed from greed, hatred, and delusion, their minds unmoving and unwavering, in true concentration.
Giving up and leaving behind every evil companion, and every meaningless conversation and defiled conduct, praising meditative concentration and forest dwelling — and it is for this reason that this light comes to be attained.

He further radiates a light named 'Wisdom Adornment'; this light awakens the foolish and deluded, causing them to realize the truths and understand dependent origination, every one of their faculties and their wisdom entirely penetrating.
If one is able to realize the truths and understand dependent origination, every one of one's faculties and one's wisdom entirely penetrating, one thereby attains the Dharma of the sun-lamp samādhi, and, through the light of wisdom, accomplishes the fruit of buddhahood.
Giving up both his own kingdom and wealth and his very self, seeking the true Dharma for the sake of bodhi, and, having heard it, diligently and single-mindedly proclaiming it for the sake of the multitude — and it is for this reason that this light comes to be attained."

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

Taken together with Part 55's opening eight, these nine lights complete a set that maps unusually cleanly onto the six pāramitās and the practices that surround them: generosity ("Able to Give Up"), the precepts ("Removing Fever"), forbearance ("Adornment of Forbearance"), diligence ("Valiant"), meditative concentration ("Tranquility"), and wisdom ("Endowed with Wisdom," "Lamp of Wisdom," "Wisdom Adornment"), framed by lights of devotion and giving up the household life. The chain of causation from two fascicles ago is being re-walked here at a finer resolution — not one continuous ladder this time, but many separate, self-contained loops, each showing a single virtue's own light circling back to name the exact practice that produced it.

Part 56 Complete

This closes Part 56. The sequence of lights continues in Part 57 with lights that reach beings caught in fear, poverty, sickness, and moral confusion — extending compassion's own light toward those in the most acute forms of need.
