A Hair-Tip's Lands, Once More

The verses return to the hair-tip of Part 570, now stating outright what the earlier nesting only implied: unspeakable lands gather there without the hair-tip growing any larger, and each land keeps its own form without disturbing the rest. The image then narrows further, to a single pore, and opens into the longest litany yet — thirty-nine clauses of what cannot be told about entering it.

Without Growing Any Larger

The hair-tip from Part 570 returns, and the verses now say directly what the nesting there only showed: the lands gathered within it do not crowd it, and it does not expand to hold them.

Ru-Yi Translation

Every spiritual transformation is unspeakable; every manifestation is unspeakable; the kalpas within them are unspeakable; the distinctions within them are unspeakable — yet the bodhisattva is able to distinguish and speak of them all, though no reckoner skilled in numbers could ever tell them apart.
Within a single hair-tip are lands both great and small, lands defiled and pure, lands coarse and subtle — all of them unspeakable, yet each and every one clearly known and distinguished.
When a single land is ground into dust, that dust is measureless and unspeakable; and lands as numerous as those boundless motes of dust all come together, gathered within a single hair-tip.
These unspeakable lands, gathered together within the hair-tip, crowd it not at all; the hair-tip is not made to grow any larger, and yet those lands all come together there.

Every land found within it keeps its original form, without any confusion; as one land does not disturb the rest, so it is with every land.
The realm of empty space has no boundary or edge, yet it is entirely spread through the hair-tip, filling it completely; and every land within that hair-tip, the bodhisattva can speak of in a single thought-moment.
Within a single fine pore, unspeakable lands enter one after another; the pore is able to receive all those lands, yet those lands are unable to fill the pore.
The kalpas spent entering are unspeakable; the kalpas spent receiving are unspeakable; and while abiding there in that ranked array, no one could ever tell the full number of kalpas.

不使毛端有增大,而彼國土俱來集 — the hair-tip is not made to grow any larger, and yet those lands all come together there. This is the detail that separates this passage from ordinary hyperbole about very large numbers: the container is explicitly said not to expand. The lands are not miniaturized to fit, and the hair-tip is not enlarged to hold them — both keep their own measure, and containment happens anyway.

What Cannot Be Told of Entering

The image narrows to a single fine pore. What follows is the longest litany so far in this chapter — thirty-nine clauses, each naming one more thing about that entering which language cannot reach.

Having thus been received and abided there, every sphere of experience is unspeakable; the skillful means of entering is unspeakable; what is done once having entered is unspeakable; the clarity of the mind faculty is unspeakable; journeying through every direction is unspeakable; valiant diligence is unspeakable; mastery over spiritual transformation is unspeakable; every thought is unspeakable; every great vow is unspeakable; every sphere of experience is unspeakable; every thorough penetration is unspeakable; the purity of bodily action is unspeakable; the purity of verbal action is unspeakable; the purity of mental action is unspeakable; the purity of faith and understanding is unspeakable; the purity of wondrous wisdom is unspeakable; the purity of wondrous insight is unspeakable; comprehending true reality is unspeakable; cutting off every doubt is unspeakable; departing from birth and death is unspeakable; ascending to the right position is unspeakable; the profound samādhi is unspeakable; thoroughly comprehending everything is unspeakable; every sentient being is unspeakable; every buddha-land is unspeakable; knowing the bodies of beings is unspeakable; knowing their mental delights is unspeakable; knowing their karmic fruits is unspeakable; knowing their mental understanding is unspeakable; knowing their categories is unspeakable; knowing their spiritual natures is unspeakable; knowing the bodies they receive is unspeakable; knowing their places of birth is unspeakable; knowing them in the very moment of birth is unspeakable; knowing them once already born is unspeakable; knowing their comprehension is unspeakable; knowing their destinies is unspeakable; knowing their language is unspeakable; and knowing their deeds is unspeakable.

知眾生身不可說,知其心樂不可說,知其業果不可說 — knowing the bodies of beings is unspeakable; knowing their mental delights is unspeakable; knowing their karmic fruits is unspeakable. The second half of this litany shifts from what a bodhisattva does to what a bodhisattva knows, working through nearly a dozen categories of knowledge about beings — body, disposition, karma, understanding, category, nature, birth, destiny, language, deeds — each one still unspeakable. The list does not conclude with a summary; it simply stops, on knowledge of a being's deeds, as abruptly as it began.

Part 572 Complete

This continues chapter thirty, 阿僧祇品, in fascicle forty-five. Part 573 opens an even longer litany — the bodhisattva's great compassion described across well over a hundred unspeakable clauses.
