The Bodhisattva's Great Compassion

A single line of introduction — a bodhisattva's great compassion, benefiting every world — opens onto the longest litany in the chapter so far. Seventy-eight clauses follow, one after another, moving from manifesting bodies and journeying to buddha-lands, through generosity, precepts, and concentration, to worlds of defilement, each one still unspeakable.

From Manifesting a Body to Worlds of Defilement

One sentence names the bodhisattva's great compassion. Everything after it, all the way to the end of this part, is a single unbroken chain of what that compassion does and cannot be told in full.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

菩薩如是大慈悲,利益一切諸世間 — the bodhisattva, with such great compassion, benefits every world. Every clause that follows this opening line depends grammatically on it: the whole seventy-eight-item chain is one long description of what that compassion consists of. The list moves in loose clusters — bodies and journeys, offerings, generosity, precepts, concentration, wisdom, dharma-gateways — but never announces the shift from one cluster to the next, so that the compassion being described comes to feel less like an ordered curriculum and more like a single, undivided activity.

Part 573 Complete

This continues chapter thirty, 阿僧祇品, in fascicle forty-five. Part 574 completes this litany, carrying it from knowing the nature of beings through to a plea of sorrow for the world.
