Kalpas of Praise for a Single Tathāgata
After the long litanies of Parts 573 and 574, the verses return to their earlier four-line form. A single body multiplies into unspeakable heads, tongues, and sounds, each still praising a buddha whose merit outlasts every kalpa spent on it — and then the scale narrows again, to lotus-flower worlds folded into a single mote of dust.
A Single Body, Every Sound Praising
The verses trace a single body multiplying into unspeakable heads, then tongues, then sounds — every one of them still not enough kalpas to exhaust a buddha's merit.
Unspeakable are all the kalpas needed to praise unspeakable merits; yet unspeakable kalpas could still be exhausted, while unspeakable merit could never be exhausted.
Unspeakable are the tathāgatas, unspeakable are their tongue-faculties; praising the buddha's unspeakable virtue, unspeakable kalpas could never exhaust it.
Every being in the ten directions, all attaining right enlightenment at the same moment — within that, a single buddha is able to manifest universally, in unspeakable bodies, every one.
Within that unspeakable number of bodies, from a single body, unspeakable heads are displayed; within that unspeakable number of heads, from a single head, unspeakable tongues are displayed; within that unspeakable number of tongues, from a single tongue, unspeakable sounds are displayed; within that unspeakable number of sounds, from a single sound, unspeakable kalpas are abided in.
As with one, so with every buddha; as with one, so with every body; as with one, so with every head; as with one, so with every tongue; as with one, so with every sound — through unspeakable kalpas constantly praising the buddha, unspeakable kalpas could still be exhausted, while praising the buddha's merit could never be exhausted.
不可說劫猶可盡,不可說德不可盡 — unspeakable kalpas could still be exhausted, while unspeakable merit could never be exhausted. This line, repeated at the close of both stanzas above, draws a line the entire chapter has been circling since the doubling ladder of Part 567: the largest nameable quantity of time is still finite enough to run out. Merit is not being called a bigger number than the unspeakably unspeakable — it is being placed in a different category altogether, one that exhaustion does not reach.
Lotus Worlds in a Single Mote of Dust
The scale reverses again, folding unspeakable lotus-flower worlds — each with its own tathāgata — into a single mote of dust, then multiplying that dust across an unbounded ocean of lands.
Within a single mote of dust, unspeakable lotus-flower realms can be entirely contained; and within each and every one of those lotus-flower worlds, the Tathāgata Foremost in Virtue is unspeakably present.
Extending to pervade the entire dharma-realm, every mote of dust found within it, whether worlds are forming, abiding, or decaying — their number is measureless and unspeakable.
Within a single mote of dust, without any boundary or edge, measureless lands universally come and enter; the distinctions of the ten directions are unspeakable, and the distribution of that ocean of lands is unspeakable.
Within each and every one of those lands there is a tathāgata, whose lifespan in kalpas is unspeakable; every buddha's practice is unspeakable; the profound and wondrous dharma is unspeakable; spiritual power and great strength are unspeakable; unobstructed wisdom is unspeakable; entering into pores is unspeakable; the causes and conditions of those pores are unspeakable; accomplishing the ten powers is unspeakable; awakening to bodhi is unspeakable; entering the pure dharma-realm is unspeakable; and attaining the profound treasury of wisdom is unspeakable.
Every manner of number and measure is unspeakable, yet all of it is entirely known just as it is; every manner of form and dimension is unspeakable, yet none of it goes without complete comprehension.
Every manner of samādhi is unspeakable, and one is able to abide within it through every kalpa; at the places of unspeakable buddhas, the purity of practice there is unspeakable.
Attaining an unspeakable, unobstructed mind, journeying to the ten directions is unspeakable; displaying spiritual power is unspeakable; the boundlessness of one's practice is unspeakable; journeying to every land is unspeakable; thoroughly comprehending every buddha is unspeakable; diligence and valor are unspeakable; and the thorough penetration of wisdom is unspeakable.
種種數量不可說,如其一切悉了知 — every manner of number and measure is unspeakable, yet all of it is entirely known just as it is. This is the pivot the chapter keeps returning to: unspeakable does not mean unknown. A bodhisattva's knowledge is said to reach every one of these unspeakable quantities completely, even though no language, including the doubling ladder that opened this chapter, could ever state them.
Part 575 Complete
This continues chapter thirty, 阿僧祇品, in fascicle forty-five. Part 576 completes the chapter's closing verses and, with them, chapter thirty itself.
