Ten Qualities Pervading the Dharma-Realm
The chapter's long sequence of tens begins in earnest: first, ten boundless qualities running through a buddha's body, eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and mind; then ten kinds of wisdom that manifest an entire buddha's life story — descent, birth, renunciation, enlightenment, teaching — everywhere at once, within a single thought.
A Boundless Body, Boundless Senses
The first true list of ten runs through the parts of a buddha's body one by one — eyes, ears, nose, tongue, mind — each one said to be boundless, before turning to buddha-lands and bodhisattva vows that are boundless in the same way.
「佛子！諸佛世尊有十種法，普遍無量無邊法界。何等為十？所謂：一切諸佛有無邊際身，色相清淨，普入諸趣而無染著；一切諸佛有無邊際無障礙眼，於一切法悉能明見；一切諸佛有無邊際無障礙耳，悉能解了一切音聲；一切諸佛有無邊際鼻，能到諸佛自在彼岸；一切諸佛有廣長舌，出妙音聲周遍法界；一切諸佛有無邊際身，應眾生心，咸令得見；一切諸佛有無邊際意，住於無礙平等法身；一切諸佛有無邊際無礙解脫，示現無盡大神通力；一切諸佛有無邊際清淨世界，隨眾生樂現眾佛土，具足無量種種莊嚴，而於其中不生染著；一切諸佛有無邊際菩薩行願，得圓滿智，遊戲自在，悉能通達一切佛法。佛子！是為如來、應、正等覺普遍法界無邊際十種佛法。
"Sons of the Buddha! The buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, have ten kinds of dharma that pervade the measureless, boundless dharma-realm. What are these ten? They are: every buddha has a boundless body, its form and color pure, universally entering every destiny without ever being tainted by it; every buddha has boundless, unobstructed eyes, able to clearly see every dharma; every buddha has boundless, unobstructed ears, able to fully comprehend every sound; every buddha has a boundless nose, able to reach the far shore of every buddha's mastery; every buddha has the sign of the broad and long tongue, emitting a wondrous voice that pervades the dharma-realm; every buddha has a boundless body, responding to the minds of sentient beings so that all of them are caused to see it; every buddha has a boundless mind, abiding in an unobstructed, equal dharma-body; every buddha has boundless, unobstructed liberation, manifesting inexhaustible great spiritual power; every buddha has boundless, pure worlds, manifesting buddha-lands according to what sentient beings delight in, entirely endowed with measureless and various adornments, while never giving rise to any taint within them; and every buddha has boundless bodhisattva practices and vows, attaining complete wisdom, at ease and unrestrained, able to penetrate every buddha-dharma entirely. Sons of the Buddha! These are the ten kinds of buddha-dharma of the tathāgata, the worthy one, the perfectly enlightened one, pervading the boundless dharma-realm.
一切諸佛有廣長舌，出妙音聲周遍法界 — every buddha has the sign of the broad and long tongue, emitting a wondrous voice that pervades the dharma-realm. This same sign, one of the thirty-two marks named in earlier fascicles, appears here folded into a list about boundlessness rather than about physical description — the tongue is not admired for its shape but for what it makes possible: a voice reaching everywhere at once.
A Whole Life, in a Single Thought
The second list of ten takes the traditional stages of a buddha's life — descent from the heavens, birth, renunciation, enlightenment, teaching — and states that every buddha manifests all of them, across measureless worlds, within one single thought-moment.
「佛子！諸佛世尊有十種念念出生智。何等為十？所謂：一切諸佛於一念中，悉能示現無量世界從天來下；一切諸佛於一念中，悉能示現無量世界菩薩受生；一切諸佛於一念中，悉能示現無量世界出家學道；一切諸佛於一念中，悉能示現無量世界菩提樹下成等正覺；一切諸佛於一念中，悉能示現無量世界轉妙法輪；一切諸佛於一念中，悉能示現無量世界教化眾生供養諸佛；一切諸佛於一念中，悉能示現無量世界不可言說種種佛身；一切諸佛於一念中，悉能示現無量世界種種莊嚴、無數莊嚴、如來自在一切智藏；一切諸佛於一念中，悉能示現無量世界無量無數清淨眾生；一切諸佛於一念中，悉能示現無量世界三世諸佛種種根性、種種精進、種種行解，於三世中成等正覺。是為十。
"Sons of the Buddha! The buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, have ten kinds of wisdom born in every thought-moment. What are these ten? They are: within a single thought-moment, every buddha is able to manifest, throughout measureless worlds, a descent from the heavens; within a single thought-moment, every buddha is able to manifest, throughout measureless worlds, a bodhisattva's taking of birth; within a single thought-moment, every buddha is able to manifest, throughout measureless worlds, a going forth from home to study the path; within a single thought-moment, every buddha is able to manifest, throughout measureless worlds, the attainment of perfect enlightenment beneath the bodhi tree; within a single thought-moment, every buddha is able to manifest, throughout measureless worlds, the turning of the wondrous dharma-wheel; within a single thought-moment, every buddha is able to manifest, throughout measureless worlds, the teaching and transforming of sentient beings and the making of offerings to buddhas; within a single thought-moment, every buddha is able to manifest, throughout measureless worlds, every manner of unspeakable buddha-body; within a single thought-moment, every buddha is able to manifest, throughout measureless worlds, every manner of adornment, countless adornments, and the tathāgata's own mastery, the treasury of all-knowing wisdom; within a single thought-moment, every buddha is able to manifest, throughout measureless worlds, measureless and countless pure sentient beings; and within a single thought-moment, every buddha is able to manifest, throughout measureless worlds, the buddhas of the three times, with their every manner of faculty, every manner of diligence, and every manner of practice and understanding, attaining perfect enlightenment across the three times. These are the ten.
從天來下……出家學道……菩提樹下成等正覺……轉妙法輪 — a descent from the heavens … going forth from home to study the path … attaining perfect enlightenment beneath the bodhi tree … turning the wondrous dharma-wheel. These are the traditional stages of a buddha's biography, the same sequence told in countless narrative sūtras as a single life happening once. Here they are not a story but a standing capacity: something every buddha does constantly, everywhere, in less time than a single thought takes to arise.
