Timing Never Missed, and Matchless States

Three more lists of ten: the moments a buddha never lets slip past, from enlightenment itself down to entering an ordinary village; ten matchless states in which one sitting, one word, or one thought turns out to already contain everything; and ten kinds of wisdom that arise precisely where emptiness would seem to leave nothing to know.

Never Missing the Time

The first list here moves from the largest occasion a buddha marks — enlightenment itself — down to the smallest and most ordinary: entering a village, gathering the faithful, taming the difficult.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Sons of the Buddha! The buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, have ten kinds of never missing the right time. What are these ten? They are: every buddha never misses the time for attaining perfect enlightenment; every buddha never misses the time for ripening those with whom they have a karmic affinity; every buddha never misses the time for bestowing predictions on bodhisattvas; every buddha never misses the time for manifesting spiritual power in accordance with sentient beings' minds; every buddha never misses the time for manifesting a buddha-body in accordance with sentient beings' understanding; every buddha never misses the time for abiding in great equanimity; every buddha never misses the time for entering villages and towns; every buddha never misses the time for gathering in those of pure faith; every buddha never misses the time for taming evil sentient beings; and every buddha never misses the time for manifesting inconceivable buddha spiritual powers. These are the ten.

One Sitting, One Word, One Thought

The second list gathers ten claims of a single kind: that one sitting, one word, one light, one body, one place, one wisdom, or one thought-moment already holds everything the plural version would hold.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Sons of the Buddha! The buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, have ten kinds of matchless, inconceivable states. What are these ten? They are: every buddha, in a single cross-legged sitting, fills the measureless worlds of the ten directions; every buddha, in speaking a single word of meaning, is able to disclose every buddha-dharma entirely; every buddha, in emitting a single light, is able to universally illuminate every world; every buddha, within a single body, is able to manifest every body entirely; every buddha, within a single place, is able to manifest every world entirely; every buddha, within a single wisdom, is able to determine every dharma entirely without any hindrance; every buddha, within a single thought-moment, is able to journey universally to the worlds of the ten directions; every buddha, within a single thought-moment, manifests the tathāgata's measureless majestic virtue entirely; every buddha, within a single thought-moment, universally attends to the buddhas and beings of the three times with a mind that is never confused; and every buddha, within a single thought-moment, is of one identical essence, without duality, with every buddha of the past, future, and present. These are the ten.

與去、來、今一切諸佛體同無二 — of one identical essence, without duality, with every buddha of the past, future, and present. This closes the list on the strongest of its ten claims: not that a buddha can reach every other buddha, but that there is, at the level of essence, no plurality of buddhas to reach in the first place — past, future, and present collapsing into a single identity the other nine items only approach from different angles.

Wisdom Where Emptiness Would Seem to Leave Nothing

The third list pairs each item with its own apparent contradiction: a buddha knows that a dharma has no self, no mark, no arising — and from precisely that knowledge, a specific wisdom about that same dharma is said to arise.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Sons of the Buddha! The buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, are able to give rise to ten kinds of wisdom. What are these ten? They are: every buddha, knowing that all dharmas have nowhere to go, is nevertheless able to give rise to the wisdom of dedication and vow; every buddha, knowing that all dharmas are entirely without body, is nevertheless able to give rise to the wisdom of a pure body; every buddha, knowing that all dharmas are originally without duality, is nevertheless able to give rise to the wisdom of awakening; every buddha, knowing that all dharmas are without self and without sentient beings, is nevertheless able to give rise to the wisdom of taming sentient beings; every buddha, knowing that all dharmas are originally without mark, is nevertheless able to give rise to the wisdom of comprehending every mark; every buddha, knowing that no world ever truly forms or decays, is nevertheless able to give rise to the wisdom of comprehending forming and decaying; every buddha, knowing that all dharmas are without any doing, is nevertheless able to give rise to the wisdom of knowing karmic fruits; every buddha, knowing that all dharmas are without any speech, is nevertheless able to give rise to the wisdom of comprehending speech; every buddha, knowing that all dharmas are without defilement or purity, is nevertheless able to give rise to the wisdom of knowing defilement and purity; and every buddha, knowing that all dharmas are without arising or ceasing, is nevertheless able to give rise to the wisdom of comprehending arising and ceasing. These are the ten.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

知一切法無所趣向,而能出生迴向願智 — knowing that all dharmas have nowhere to go, and yet able to give rise to the wisdom of dedication and vow. Every item in this list has the same shape: a correct emptiness-knowledge on one side, and on the other, a specific functional wisdom that emptiness alone would not predict. The list does not treat this as paradox needing resolution — it simply states, ten times over, that knowing nothing has an own-nature is exactly what allows a buddha to act with complete precision within it.

Part 582 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-three, 佛不思議法品, in fascicle forty-six. Part 583 continues the sequence of tens, with ten ways a buddha enters everything completely and ten difficult-to-believe, vast dharmas.
