Great Merits, Ultimate Purity, and Constant Buddha-Work
Three more lists of ten: great merits each closed with the same refrain of being free of fault and purified; a shorter list of what "ultimate purity" reaches into, from vows to retinue to the body itself; and ten buddha-works numbered plainly, one through ten, carried out in every world at every time without exception.
Ten Great Merits, Free of Every Fault
This list names ten great merits of a buddha, and closes every single item with the same four-character refrain — free of fault, purified — turning the whole list into something closer to a chant than an inventory.
"Sons of the Buddha! The buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, have ten kinds of great merit, free of fault and purified. What are these ten? They are: every buddha is endowed with great majestic virtue, free of fault and purified; every buddha is born into the tathāgata's family across the three times, of a well-tamed lineage, free of fault and purified; every buddha, to the very end of future time, has a mind that abides nowhere, free of fault and purified; every buddha is unattached to any dharma of the three times, free of fault and purified; every buddha knows that every manner of nature is a single nature, coming from nowhere at all, free of fault and purified; every buddha's merit, in every time before and after, is inexhaustible, equal to the dharma-realm, free of fault and purified; every buddha's boundless bodily marks pervade the lands of the ten directions, taming every sentient being at the right time, free of fault and purified; every buddha, having attained the four fearlessnesses, free of every terror, roars the great lion's roar within the assembly, clearly distinguishing every dharma, free of fault and purified; every buddha, entering parinirvāṇa after unspeakable, unspeakable kalpas, causes sentient beings who merely hear the name to obtain measureless merit, no different from the buddha's merit while present in the world, free of fault and purified; and every buddha, however far off in unspeakable, unspeakable worlds, is seen entirely by any sentient being who holds them in mind with single-pointed, right mindfulness, free of fault and purified. These are the ten.
眾生聞名獲無量福,如佛現在功德無異 — sentient beings who merely hear the name obtain measureless merit, no different from the buddha's merit while present in the world. This single clause is the doctrinal seed of an entire later tradition of name-recitation practice: a buddha who has already entered parinirvāṇa is said to still be reachable through nothing more than hearing and holding the name, with no lesser effect than encountering that buddha in person.
Ten Kinds of Ultimate Purity
A shorter, plainer list follows: not qualities described at length, but ten domains — vows, conduct, land, retinue, lineage, body, dharma-body, wisdom, liberation — each simply named as ultimately pure.
"Sons of the Buddha! The buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, have ten kinds of ultimate purity. What are these ten? They are: every buddha's great vows of long ago are ultimately pure; every buddha's upheld pure conduct is ultimately pure; every buddha's departure from every worldly delusion is ultimately pure; every buddha's adorned land is ultimately pure; every buddha's every retinue is ultimately pure; every buddha's every lineage is ultimately pure; every buddha's physical body and its excellent marks are ultimately pure; every buddha's dharma-body, undefiled, is ultimately pure; every buddha's all-knowing wisdom, unobstructed, is ultimately pure; and every buddha's liberation and mastery, their work already done, having reached the far shore, is ultimately pure. These are the ten.
Ten Buddha-Works, in Every World, at Every Time
For once the list is numbered plainly, one through ten, rather than repeated with "every buddha" at the head of each clause — ten things a buddha does in every world, at every time, without exception.
"Sons of the Buddha! The buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, in every world and at every time, carry out ten kinds of buddha-work. What are these ten? First, if there is a sentient being who single-mindedly holds them in mind, the buddha appears before them; second, if there is a sentient being whose mind is not yet tamed and compliant, the buddha teaches them the dharma; third, if there is a sentient being able to give rise to pure faith, the buddha causes them without fail to obtain measureless wholesome roots; fourth, if there is a sentient being able to enter the station of dharma, the buddha causes it all to be directly realized, with nothing left uncomprehended; fifth, the buddha teaches and transforms sentient beings without ever growing weary; sixth, the buddha travels among every buddha-land, going and coming without obstruction; seventh, the buddha's great compassion never abandons any sentient being; eighth, the buddha manifests transformation-bodies that are never interrupted; ninth, the buddha's spiritual mastery is never once at rest; and tenth, the buddha abides in the dharma-realm, able to observe it universally. These are the ten.
Part 584 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-three, 佛不思議法品, in fascicle forty-six. Part 585 continues the sequence of tens, with ten kinds of inexhaustible wisdom-ocean dharma, ten constant qualities, and ten gateways for teaching measureless dharmas.
