Unobstructed Abiding, and Supreme Adornments Begin

A tenth list of unobstructed states — going, abiding, sitting, teaching, all without hindrance — closes, and a new and much longer list opens: ten supreme, unsurpassed adornments, each numbered and named individually rather than repeated in a single refrain. The first four cover a buddha's body, voice, mind, and light.

Ten Kinds of Unobstructed Abiding

This list of ten covers everything from traveling and sitting to teaching the dharma and abiding in the Tuṣita palace — each one, without exception, unobstructed.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Sons of the Buddha! The buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, have ten kinds of unobstructed abiding. What are these ten? They are: every buddha is able to go to every world in unobstructed abiding; every buddha is able to abide in every world in unobstructed abiding; every buddha is able to walk, stand, sit, and lie down in every world in unobstructed abiding; every buddha is able to expound the true dharma in every world in unobstructed abiding; every buddha is able to abide in the Tuṣita heaven's palace within every world in unobstructed abiding; every buddha is able to enter every one of the three times within the dharma-realm in unobstructed abiding; every buddha is able to sit at every bodhimaṇḍa within the dharma-realm in unobstructed abiding; every buddha is able, in thought after thought, to observe the mental conduct of every sentient being and to teach and tame them through three kinds of mastery, in unobstructed abiding; every buddha is able, with a single body, to abide at measureless, inconceivable buddha-places and every other place at once, benefiting sentient beings, in unobstructed abiding; and every buddha is able to disclose the true dharma spoken by measureless buddhas, in unobstructed abiding. These are the ten.

Ten Supreme Adornments Begin

A new list opens with a different shape: instead of one refrain repeated ten times, each of these ten adornments is announced separately by number — body, speech, mind, and light are the first four.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Sons of the Buddha! The buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, have ten kinds of supreme, unsurpassed adornment. What are these ten? Every buddha is entirely endowed with every mark and excellent characteristic — this is the buddhas' first supreme, unsurpassed adornment, the adornment of the body. Every buddha is entirely endowed with sixty kinds of voice, each voice having five hundred parts, each part adorned with measureless hundreds of thousands of pure sounds; able, amid every assembly in the dharma-realm, to be free of every fear, roaring the great lion's roar to expound the tathāgata's profound meaning of the dharma, so that among sentient beings who hear it, none fail to rejoice, and all are tamed according to their own faculties and desires — this is the buddhas' second supreme, unsurpassed adornment, the adornment of speech.

Ru-Yi Translation

Every buddha is entirely endowed with the ten powers, the great samādhis, and the eighteen unshared qualities, adorning their mental action; the sphere in which they act is penetrated without obstruction, and every buddha-dharma is attained entirely without remainder; the dharma-realm's own adornment becomes their adornment; and the mental conduct of every sentient being in the dharma-realm, past, future, and present, each with its own distinctions, is entirely and clearly seen within a single thought-moment — this is the buddhas' third supreme, unsurpassed adornment, the adornment of mind. Every buddha is entirely able to emit countless lights, each light having an unspeakable net of light as its retinue, universally illuminating every buddha's land, extinguishing every world's darkness of ignorance, manifesting the arising of measureless buddhas whose bodies are equally and entirely pure, so that the buddha-work carried out is never wasted and sentient beings are caused to reach the stage of never turning back — this is the buddhas' fourth supreme, unsurpassed adornment, the adornment of light.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

Unlike most lists in this chapter, each item here is separately labeled — the buddhas' first, second, third, fourth adornment — rather than repeated under a single opening refrain. It reads less like an inventory recited from memory and more like a formal roll call, each entry closing its own case before the next opens.

Part 587 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-three, 佛不思議法品, in fascicle forty-six. Part 588 completes the ten supreme adornments, from the buddhas' smile to their great compassion.
