The Supreme Adornments Complete
The list of ten supreme, unsurpassed adornments begun in Part 587 finishes here: a smile that bestows enlightenment-predictions on countless beings, a dharma-body beyond language, constant light, wondrous color, an unimpeachable lineage, and a great compassion that closes the list where a buddha becomes, simply, the foremost field of merit in the world.
A Smile That Bestows a Prediction
The fifth adornment turns to something almost incidental — a buddha's smile — and finds in it light that reaches every world and a prediction of enlightenment given to countless beings. The sixth and seventh adornments follow: the dharma-body beyond language, and light that never stops shining.
一切諸佛現微笑時，皆於口中放百千億那由他阿僧祇光明，一一光明各有無量不思議種種色，遍照十方一切世界，於大眾中發誠實語，授無量無數不思議眾生阿耨多羅三藐三菩提記，是為諸佛第五離世癡惑最勝無上現微笑莊嚴。一切諸佛皆有法身清淨無礙，於一切法究竟通達，住於法界無有邊際，雖在世間不與世雜，了世實性，行出世法，言語道斷，超蘊、界、處，是為諸佛第六最勝無上法身莊嚴。一切諸佛皆有無量常妙光明，不可說不可說種種色相以為嚴好為光明藏，出生無量圓滿光明，普照十方無有障礙，是為諸佛第七最勝無上常妙光明莊嚴。
When every buddha manifests a smile, from their mouth they emit a hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of asaṃkhyeyas of light, each light having measureless, inconceivable, various colors, universally illuminating every world in the ten directions; and within the great assembly, speaking truthful words, they bestow predictions of unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment upon measureless, countless, inconceivable sentient beings — this is the buddhas' fifth supreme, unsurpassed adornment, free of the world's delusion, the adornment of manifesting a smile. Every buddha has a dharma-body that is pure and unobstructed, thoroughly penetrating every dharma, abiding in the dharma-realm without any boundary; though present within the world, they are never mixed together with the world, comprehending the world's true nature and practicing dharmas that transcend the world; the path of language and speech is cut off, and they transcend the aggregates, the sense-realms, and the sense-bases — this is the buddhas' sixth supreme, unsurpassed adornment, the adornment of the dharma-body. Every buddha has measureless, constant, wondrous light, adorned by unspeakable, unspeakable manifold forms and colors, forming a treasury of light, giving rise to measureless, perfectly complete light, universally illuminating the ten directions without any hindrance — this is the buddhas' seventh supreme, unsurpassed adornment, the adornment of constant, wondrous light.
言語道斷，超蘊、界、處 — the path of language and speech is cut off, and they transcend the aggregates, the sense-realms, and the sense-bases. Placed between a smile that reaches every world and light that never stops shining, the dharma-body adornment is the one item in this list that cannot be pictured at all — its entire description is a series of things it is not bound by, rather than anything it visibly does.
Color, Lineage, and Great Compassion
The list closes with three more adornments: every kind of wondrous color a buddha can take, a lineage beyond any mockery or slander, and a great compassion that ends not with a description of the buddha but with a title — the foremost field of merit in the world.
一切諸佛皆有無邊妙色、可愛妙色、清淨妙色、隨心所現妙色、映蔽一切三界妙色、到於彼岸無上妙色，是為諸佛第八最勝無上妙色莊嚴。一切諸佛皆於三世佛種中生，積眾善寶，究竟清淨，無諸過失，離世譏謗，一切法中最為殊勝清淨妙行之所莊嚴，具足成就一切智智，種族清淨無能譏毀，是為諸佛第九最勝無上種族莊嚴。一切諸佛以大慈力莊嚴其身，究竟清淨無諸渴愛，身行永息，心善解脫，見者無厭，大悲救護一切世間；第一福田、無上受者，哀愍利益一切眾生，悉令增長無量福德、智慧之聚，是為諸佛第十最勝無上大慈大悲功德莊嚴。是為十。
Every buddha has boundless wondrous color, lovable wondrous color, pure wondrous color, wondrous color manifesting according to the mind, wondrous color that outshines the entire triple world, and unsurpassed wondrous color that has reached the far shore — this is the buddhas' eighth supreme, unsurpassed adornment, the adornment of wondrous color. Every buddha is born within the buddha-lineage of the three times, accumulating a multitude of wholesome treasures, ultimately pure, free of every fault, departed from the world's mockery and slander; adorned by the most excellent and pure practice among every dharma, entirely accomplishing all-knowing wisdom, their lineage pure and beyond any mockery — this is the buddhas' ninth supreme, unsurpassed adornment, the adornment of lineage. Every buddha adorns their body with the power of great loving-kindness, ultimately pure and free of every thirsting craving, their bodily activity forever stilled, their mind well liberated, so that none who see them ever grow weary of the sight; with great compassion they rescue and protect every world, the foremost field of merit, the unsurpassed recipient of offerings, taking pity on and benefiting every sentient being, causing all of them to increase their accumulation of measureless merit and wisdom — this is the buddhas' tenth supreme, unsurpassed adornment, the adornment of the merit of great loving-kindness and great compassion. These are the ten.
見者無厭，大悲救護一切世間 — none who see them ever grow weary of the sight; with great compassion they rescue and protect every world. Ten adornments began with the thirty-two marks of the body and end here with an emotional fact about the effect of seeing a buddha at all. The list moves outward from what a buddha is made of to what a buddha does for others, and settles, in its final line, on how it feels to simply be in their presence.
