Mastery Completes, Perfect Buddha-Dharma Begins
The ten kinds of mastery close with three of the strangest items yet — an eye performing an ear's work, a single pore holding beings as vast as buddha-lands, and countless buddhas awakening at once without the slightest exertion of effort. A new list then opens on perfect buddha-dharma, ending, as so many lists in this chapter do, on a buddha's final entry into nirvāṇa.
An Eye That Hears, a Pore That Holds a World
The eighth kind of mastery lets each sense perform the next sense's work in turn; the ninth folds beings as large as buddha-lands into a single pore without crowding; the tenth ends the list on buddhas appearing everywhere at once, requiring no effort at all.
Every buddha is able to use the eye's sphere to perform the ear's buddha-work, able to use the ear's sphere to perform the nose's buddha-work, able to use the nose's sphere to perform the tongue's buddha-work, able to use the tongue's sphere to perform the body's buddha-work, able to use the body's sphere to perform the mind's buddha-work, and able, through the mind's sphere, to abide amid every manner of worldly and world-transcending state throughout every world, carrying out measureless, vast buddha-work within each and every one of those states — this is the buddhas' eighth kind of mastery. Every buddha's body has pores each and every one of which is able to hold every sentient being; every sentient being's body is entirely equal in extent to unspeakable buddha-lands, without any crowding at all; and every sentient being is able, step by step, to pass through countless worlds, and unfolding onward in this way through countless kalpas, entirely sees every buddha appearing in the world, teaching and transforming beings, turning the pure dharma-wheel, and disclosing the unspeakable dharma of the past, future, and present; throughout the whole of empty space, every sentient being, in whatever destiny they take on a body, is entirely provided with dignified bearing, coming and going, and every manner of enjoyment they receive, all without the slightest obstruction — this is the buddhas' ninth kind of mastery. Every buddha, within a single thought-moment, manifests as many buddhas as there are motes of dust in every world, and each and every one of those buddhas attains perfect enlightenment upon a lion-throne of a lotus-treasury within a vast, magnificently adorned world of every wondrous lotus flower throughout the entire dharma-realm, displaying the buddhas' own mastery and spiritual power; and just as it is within that vast, magnificently adorned world of wondrous lotus flowers, so it is throughout the entire dharma-realm, in unspeakable, unspeakable manners of adornment, manners of sphere, manners of form, manners of manifestation, and manners of pure world across every kalpa-number; and just as it is within a single thought-moment, so it is within every thought throughout measureless, boundless asaṃkhyeya kalpas — within one thought, everything appears; within one thought, measureless abidings occur — and never once is even the slightest exertion of skillful means required — this is the buddhas' tenth kind of mastery.
而未曾用少方便力 — and never once is even the slightest exertion of skillful means required. The tenth mastery closes the list on an odd emphasis: not on the scale of what happens — countless buddhas, endless kalpas, worlds without number — but on the complete absence of effort behind it. Every mastery before this one described an ability; this one insists that the ability costs nothing to use.
Perfect Buddha-Dharma Begins
A new list opens on a buddha's perfection across body, wisdom, land, and merit, and closes, as several lists in this chapter do, on the fact that every buddha eventually displays entry into nirvāṇa.
"Sons of the Buddha! The buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, have ten kinds of measureless, inconceivable, perfect buddha-dharma. What are these ten? They are: every buddha's every single pure mark is entirely endowed with a hundred kinds of merit; every buddha entirely accomplishes every buddha-dharma; every buddha entirely accomplishes every wholesome root; every buddha entirely accomplishes every merit; every buddha is able to teach and transform every sentient being; every buddha is entirely able to serve as a refuge for sentient beings; every buddha entirely accomplishes a pure buddha-land; every buddha entirely accomplishes all-knowing wisdom; every buddha entirely accomplishes a physical body with its excellent marks, so that whoever sees it gains benefit and no effort is ever wasted; every buddha is entirely endowed with the equal, true dharma of every buddha; and every buddha, having carried out buddha-work, invariably displays entry into nirvāṇa. These are the ten.
