A Single Meal, Unspeakable Heads

The fourth Nārāyaṇa-like valor takes a single meal and a single hair-tip as units of measure against unspeakable kalpas and unspeakable beings; the fifth multiplies a single body into unspeakable heads, tongues, and sounds, teaching through nine named dharma-wheels that never break off even after the future itself runs out.

One Meal, One Hair-Tip

A single meal sustains a buddha's cross-legged sitting through unspeakable kalpas of both past and future; a single hair-tip, and every hair-tip throughout the whole of empty space, becomes a seat the buddha sits upon without ever tiring — all while never once abandoning the work of teaching sentient beings.

"Sons of the Buddha! Every buddha, having eaten a single meal, sits cross-legged for unspeakable kalpas spanning both past and future, entering the inconceivable bliss received by the buddhas, their body abiding securely, tranquil and unmoving, yet never abandoning the work of transforming sentient beings. Sons of the Buddha! Suppose there were a person who measured, hair-tip by hair-tip in sequence, every world throughout the whole of empty space; the buddhas are able to sit cross-legged at each and every one of those hair-tip points, to the very end of future kalpas; and as it is at one hair-tip point, so it is at every hair-tip point. Sons of the Buddha! Suppose that among all sentient beings in every world of the ten directions, each and every sentient being's body were equal in size to as many worlds as there are motes of dust in unspeakable buddha-lands, and equal too in weight; the buddhas are able to place that many sentient beings upon a single fingertip, for the entire duration of future kalpas; and every fingertip is likewise, holding that many sentient beings while entering every single world throughout the whole of empty space, exhausting the entire dharma-realm without remainder — and yet the buddha's body and mind are never once wearied. This is the buddhas' fourth great Nārāyaṇa-banner valor and strength.

Nine Dharma-Wheels That Never Break Off

A single body multiplies into unspeakable heads, tongues, and sounds, teaching sūtras within sūtras until the entire future has been counted out — and only then does the passage name what has been taught all along: nine distinct dharma-wheels, none of which the future's own exhaustion can stop.

Ru-Yi Translation

Every buddha is able, from a single body, to manifest as many heads as there are motes of dust in unspeakable, unspeakable buddha-lands; from each and every head, to manifest as many tongues as there are motes of dust in unspeakable, unspeakable buddha-lands; from each and every tongue, to give rise to as many distinct sounds as there are motes of dust in unspeakable, unspeakable buddha-lands — and there is no being throughout the dharma-realm who fails to hear them; from each and every sound, to expound as many treasuries of sūtras as there are motes of dust in unspeakable, unspeakable buddha-lands; from each and every treasury of sūtras, to expound as many dharmas as there are motes of dust in unspeakable, unspeakable buddha-lands; and within each and every dharma, there are as many letters, phrases, and meanings as there are motes of dust in unspeakable, unspeakable buddha-lands. Expounding in this way, for as many kalpas as there are motes of dust in unspeakable, unspeakable buddha-lands; when those kalpas are exhausted, they expound further still, for as many kalpas again as there are motes of dust in unspeakable, unspeakable buddha-lands; continuing in this sequence, even to the full number of motes of dust in every world, and to the full count of the thoughts of every sentient being's mind — the kalpas of future time might still be exhausted, but the dharma-wheels turned by the tathāgata's transformation-bodies have no exhaustion at all. These are: the dharma-wheel of expounding through wisdom, the dharma-wheel of cutting off every doubt, the dharma-wheel of illuminating every dharma, the dharma-wheel of opening the unobstructed treasury, the dharma-wheel of causing measureless sentient beings to rejoice and be tamed, the dharma-wheel of disclosing every bodhisattva practice, the dharma-wheel of the sun of great wisdom rising to its full perfection, the dharma-wheel of the lamp of wisdom universally illuminating the world, and the dharma-wheel of eloquence and fearlessness adorned in every manner. Just as a single buddha-body, through spiritual power, turns dharma-wheels as distinct as these, no worldly dharma is able to serve as an analogy for it. In this way, throughout the whole of empty space, at every single point the measure of a hair-tip, there are as many worlds as there are motes of dust in unspeakable, unspeakable buddha-lands, and within each and every world, in thought after thought, as many transformation-bodies appear as there are motes of dust in unspeakable, unspeakable buddha-lands; and each and every one of those transformation-bodies is likewise, its spoken sounds, letters, phrases, and meanings each entirely filling the whole dharma-realm, so that the sentient beings within it all come to understand — and yet the buddha's speech and voice never change, never break off, and are never exhausted. This is the buddhas' fifth great Nārāyaṇa-banner valor and strength.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

未來際劫猶可窮盡,如來化身所轉法輪無有窮盡 — the kalpas of future time might still be exhausted, but the dharma-wheels turned by the tathāgata's transformation-bodies have no exhaustion at all. Every other measure in this list — dust motes, worlds, kalpas — is unspeakably large but still, grammatically, a number. This clause names the one thing here that isn't: teaching itself is placed in a category future time cannot catch up to, even given the entire remaining duration of the universe to try.
