A Mind Purified Through Unspeakable Kalpas
The eighth Nārāyaṇa-like valor is entirely a mind — described through an unbroken chain of negations, without self, without mark, without contention — held pure across unspeakable kalpas. The ninth turns the same relentless density toward the body, naming it twenty-five different ways in a single sentence that never once pauses for a full stop.
A Mind Without Self, Without Mark, Without Contention
This item is unusual within the list of ten valors: rather than describing an act of physical or cosmic strength, it describes a mind, held identical across every buddha of the three times through an unbroken sequence of what it is not.
"Sons of the Buddha! Every buddha's mind is unobstructed, forever excellently pure throughout hundreds of thousands of koṭis of nayutas of unspeakable, unspeakable kalpas. The buddhas of the past, future, and present are of a single, identical essence, without turbidity, without any veil, without self and without anything belonging to a self, neither internal nor external, comprehending every sphere as empty and still, giving rise to no false imagining; with nothing to rely on and nothing fabricated, abiding in no mark at all, forever cutting off discrimination; their original nature pure, they have relinquished every mental grasping and recollection, and with regard to every dharma, they are forever without contention; abiding in the true limit, free of desire and pure, they enter the true dharma-realm, expounding it inexhaustibly; free of every false imagining regarding what is measurable and what is beyond measure, cutting off every manner of speech about the conditioned and the unconditioned, they have already penetrated the unspeakable, boundless sphere entirely; with unobstructed, inexhaustible wisdom and skillful means, they accomplish the ten powers and every merit, adorned and pure, expounding every manner of measureless dharma, none of which ever contradicts true reality; with regard to the dharma-realm and the dharmas of the three times, they are entirely equal without any difference, ultimately at ease; they enter the most supreme treasury of every dharma, their right mindfulness within every dharma-gateway never confused, abiding securely in every buddha-land of the ten directions without ever being shifted; having attained unbroken wisdom, knowing every dharma ultimately without remainder, exhausting every outflow, their mind well liberated, their wisdom well liberated, abiding in the true limit, penetrating it without obstruction, their mind constantly in right concentration; with regard to the dharmas of the three times and the mental conduct of every sentient being, they comprehend it entirely within a single thought, without any obstruction whatsoever. This is the buddhas' eighth great Nārāyaṇa-banner valor and strength.
無我、無我所,非內、非外……不住諸相,永斷分別 — without self and without anything belonging to a self, neither internal nor external … abiding in no mark at all, forever cutting off discrimination. Placed between two items about the buddha's physical invulnerability and a following item about the buddha's body, this one describes a strength with nothing physical in it at all — the valor here is that a mind can be held this thoroughly free of grasping across unspeakable kalpas without ever lapsing.
One Body, Twenty-Five Names
The ninth item abandons ordinary sentence structure entirely, becoming a single unbroken list of compound epithets for the buddha's body — real and unreal, coming and going, existent and non-existent — each one qualifying the same single body without ever landing on a final description of it.
"Sons of the Buddha! Every buddha has: a single, identical dharma-body; a body of measureless spheres of experience; a body of boundless merit; a body inexhaustible to the world; a body untainted by the three realms; a body manifesting in accordance with thought; a body neither real nor unreal, equal and pure; a body neither coming nor going, unconditioned and indestructible; a body of a single mark that is markless, the dharma's own nature; a body without place and without direction, pervading all things equally; a body of spiritual transformation, self-mastered, with boundless forms and colors; a body universally entering everything through every manner of manifestation; a body of skillful means in the wondrous dharma; a body of the treasury of wisdom, universally illuminating; a body displaying the equality of dharma; a body pervading the entire dharma-realm; a body unmoving, undiscriminating, neither existent nor non-existent, forever pure; a body neither skillful means nor without skillful means, neither ceasing nor not ceasing, manifesting according to the differing faith and understanding of every sentient being to be transformed; a body arising from every treasury of merit; a body of suchness, endowed with every buddha-dharma; a body whose original nature is tranquil and unobstructed; a body accomplishing every unobstructed dharma; a body pervading and abiding throughout the entire pure dharma-realm; a body dividing its form, universally present throughout the entire world; and a body without grasping and without ever regressing, forever liberated, endowed with all-knowing wisdom, universally comprehending all things. This is the buddhas' ninth great Nārāyaṇa-banner valor and strength.
Twenty-five names, and not one of them is offered as more final than the rest. The list does not build toward a definition of what the buddha-body ultimately is — it keeps qualifying the same body from a new angle each time, as if any single name, held too long, would start to look like a limit rather than a description.
Part 603 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-three, 佛不思議法品, in fascicle forty-seven. Part 604 completes the ten kinds of Nārāyaṇa-like valor with a tenth item on wisdom equal to every tathāgata's own and teaching that never rests, though the chapter itself continues afterward with several more lists of ten.
