Ten Kinds of Decided Dharma
After ten lists built almost entirely around scale, two shorter lists turn to certainty and simplicity: ten events every buddha's life follows without exception, and ten swift benefits that come from nothing more than seeing a buddha, whether or not one has ever formally taken up the path.
Ten Decided Events
This list names, one by one, the fixed sequence of a buddha's life already told across several earlier parts — descent, birth, renunciation, enlightenment — but frames every item now as decided rather than merely displayed, a pattern with no exceptions.
「佛子！諸佛世尊有十種決定法。何等為十？所謂：一切諸佛定從兜率壽盡下生；一切諸佛定示受生，處胎十月；一切諸佛定厭世俗，樂求出家；一切諸佛決定坐於菩提樹下成等正覺，悟諸佛法；一切諸佛定於一念悟一切法，一切世界示現神力；一切諸佛定能應時轉妙法輪；一切諸佛定能隨彼所種善根，應時說法而為授記；一切諸佛定能應時為作佛事；一切諸佛定能為諸成就菩薩而授記別；一切諸佛定能一念普答一切眾生所問。是為十。
"Sons of the Buddha! The buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, have ten kinds of decided dharma. What are these ten? They are: every buddha is decided to descend and take birth once their lifespan in Tuṣita is ended; every buddha is decided to display the taking of birth, dwelling in the womb for ten months; every buddha is decided to feel revulsion toward worldly convention, delighting in seeking renunciation; every buddha is decided to sit beneath the bodhi tree and attain perfect enlightenment, awakening to every buddha-dharma; every buddha is decided to awaken to every dharma within a single thought-moment, manifesting spiritual power throughout every world; every buddha is decided to be able to turn the wondrous dharma-wheel at the right time; every buddha is decided to be able, according to the wholesome roots each being has planted, to teach the dharma at the right time and bestow predictions; every buddha is decided to be able to carry out buddha-work at the right time; every buddha is decided to be able to bestow distinct predictions upon every accomplished bodhisattva; and every buddha is decided to be able, within a single thought, to universally answer every question asked by every sentient being. These are the ten.
Ten Swift Effects of Seeing a Buddha
This list makes no distinction between the devoted and the merely curious: the benefits it names follow from the bare act of seeing a buddha, adjusted only by where a person already stands — those without the resolve for enlightenment are given it; those who already have it are given something further.
「佛子！諸佛世尊有十種速疾法。何等為十？所謂：一切諸佛若有見者，速得遠離一切惡趣；一切諸佛若有見者，速得圓滿殊勝功德；一切諸佛若有見者，速能成就廣大善根；一切諸佛若有見者，速得往生淨妙天上；一切諸佛若有見者，速能除斷一切疑惑；一切諸佛若已發菩提心而得見者，速得成就廣大信解永不退轉，能隨所應教化眾生，若未發心即能速發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心；一切諸佛若未入正位而得見者，速入正位；一切諸佛若有見者，速能清淨世、出世間一切諸根；一切諸佛若有見者，速得除滅一切障礙；一切諸佛若有見者，速能獲得無畏辯才。是為十。
"Sons of the Buddha! The buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, have ten kinds of swift dharma. What are these ten? They are: if there is anyone who sees a buddha, they swiftly attain distance from every evil destiny; if there is anyone who sees a buddha, they swiftly attain perfectly complete, supreme merit; if there is anyone who sees a buddha, they are swiftly able to accomplish vast wholesome roots; if there is anyone who sees a buddha, they swiftly attain rebirth in a pure and wondrous heaven; if there is anyone who sees a buddha, they are swiftly able to remove and cut off every doubt; if there is anyone who has already given rise to the mind of bodhi and comes to see a buddha, they swiftly accomplish vast faith and understanding, never turning back from it again, able to teach and transform sentient beings as needed — and if they have not yet given rise to that mind, they are then swiftly able to give rise to the mind of unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment; if there is anyone who has not yet entered the right position and comes to see a buddha, they swiftly enter the right position; if there is anyone who sees a buddha, they are swiftly able to purify every faculty, both worldly and world-transcending; if there is anyone who sees a buddha, they swiftly attain the elimination of every obstruction; and if there is anyone who sees a buddha, they are swiftly able to obtain fearless eloquence. These are the ten.
若已發菩提心而得見者……若未發心即能速發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心 — if there is anyone who has already given rise to the mind of bodhi and comes to see a buddha … and if they have not yet given rise to that mind, they are then swiftly able to give rise to it. This is the only item in the list with a branch condition: everywhere else, seeing a buddha simply produces its stated effect, but here the effect depends on where the viewer already stands, giving either advancement or a beginning, never nothing at all.
