Constant Mindfulness, and Abiding in All-Knowing Wisdom

A list addressed directly to bodhisattvas names ten things about a buddha they should never stop holding in mind, and a longer list returns to the chapter's recurring measure — a single thought-moment — now applied ten times over to knowing and responding to every sentient being at once.

What a Bodhisattva Should Never Forget

Every item in this list closes with the same instruction — every bodhisattva should constantly hold this in mind — applied in turn to a buddha's past, practice, vows, wholesome roots, enlightenment, body, and powers.

"Sons of the Buddha! The buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, have ten kinds of pure dharma every bodhisattva should constantly hold in mind. What are these ten? They are: every buddha's causes and conditions from the past — every bodhisattva should constantly hold this in mind; every buddha's pure and supreme practice — every bodhisattva should constantly hold this in mind; every buddha's perfections brought to complete fulfillment — every bodhisattva should constantly hold this in mind; every buddha's great vows accomplished — every bodhisattva should constantly hold this in mind; every buddha's wholesome roots accumulated — every bodhisattva should constantly hold this in mind; every buddha's pure conduct already fully endowed — every bodhisattva should constantly hold this in mind; every buddha's present attainment of perfect enlightenment — every bodhisattva should constantly hold this in mind; every buddha's measureless physical body — every bodhisattva should constantly hold this in mind; every buddha's measureless spiritual powers — every bodhisattva should constantly hold this in mind; and every buddha's ten powers and fearlessnesses — every bodhisattva should constantly hold this in mind. These are the ten.

Ten Kinds of Abiding in All-Knowing Wisdom

This list returns to the single thought-moment as its unit of measure, applying it ten times to a buddha's knowledge of and response to sentient beings — their minds, their karma, their unspoken longing, and the sheer fact of being remembered by even one of them.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Sons of the Buddha! The buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, have ten kinds of abiding in all-knowing wisdom. What are these ten? They are: every buddha, within a single thought-moment, entirely knows the minds and mental activities of every sentient being across the three times; every buddha, within a single thought-moment, entirely knows every karma accumulated by every sentient being across the three times, and the karmic fruits and retributions of that karma; every buddha, within a single thought-moment, entirely knows what is fitting for every sentient being, teaching and taming them through the three wheels; every buddha, within a single thought-moment, entirely knows every mental characteristic of every sentient being throughout the dharma-realm, universally manifesting a buddha's arising in every place, causing them to be able to see it, gathering them in through skillful means; every buddha, within a single thought-moment, universally follows the delight and desired understanding of every sentient being's mind throughout the dharma-realm, manifesting the teaching of dharma to cause them to be tamed; every buddha, within a single thought-moment, entirely knows what every sentient being throughout the dharma-realm delights in, and manifests spiritual power for their sake; every buddha, within a single thought-moment, pervading every place, manifests their arising according to whoever among all sentient beings is fit to be transformed, teaching that the buddha-body cannot be grasped or clung to; every buddha, within a single thought-moment, universally reaches every one of the various paths of every sentient being in every place throughout the dharma-realm; every buddha, within a single thought-moment, according to whichever sentient beings hold them in mind, responds by going to them in every place without exception; and every buddha, within a single thought-moment, entirely knows the understanding and desires of every sentient being, manifesting measureless forms and colors for their sake. These are the ten.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

隨諸眾生有憶念者,在在處處無不往應 — according to whichever sentient beings hold them in mind, they respond by going to them in every place without exception. This item quietly reverses the direction of the entire list. Every other item describes the buddha knowing and acting on a being's behalf; this one is triggered from the other side — a being simply thinking of a buddha is enough, wherever they are, to bring a response.
