Crown Marks Seventeen Through Twenty-Four
Eight more marks continue crowning the tathāgata's head, three-quarters of the way through the thirty-two now — including, at the twenty-second mark, a cloud named directly for Vairocana, the buddha whose sūtra this whole work is traditionally understood to be.
Eight More Clouds, Three-Quarters Through
The pattern continues unbroken — name, jeweled adornment, and a scene of buddhas held within the light — with the twenty-second mark pausing to name the buddha at the center of the entire sūtra by name.
次有大人相，名：一切如來解脫雲，清淨妙寶以為莊嚴，放大光明莊嚴一切佛師子座，示現一切諸佛色像及無量佛法諸佛剎海，是為十七。次有大人相，名：自在方便普照雲，毘瑠璃華、真金蓮華、摩尼王燈、妙法焰雲以為莊嚴，放一切諸佛寶焰密雲清淨光明，充滿法界，於中普現一切妙好莊嚴之具，是為十八。次有大人相，名：覺佛種性雲，無量寶光以為莊嚴，具足千輪，內外清淨，從於往昔善根所生，其光遍照十方世界，發明智日，宣布法海，是為十九。次有大人相，名：現一切如來相自在雲，眾寶瓔珞、瑠璃寶華以為莊嚴，舒大寶焰充滿法界，於中普現等一切佛剎微塵數去、來、現在無量諸佛，如師子王勇猛無畏，色相、智慧皆悉具足，是為二十。
"Next there is a mark of a great being named Cloud of Every Tathāgata's Liberation, adorned with pure and wondrous jewels, emitting great light that adorns every buddha's lion-throne, manifesting the forms of every buddha and the ocean of measureless buddha-dharmas and buddha-lands. This is the seventeenth. Next there is a mark of a great being named Cloud of Universally Illuminating Mastery and Skillful Means, adorned with vaidūrya flowers, true-gold lotus flowers, maṇi-king lamps, and a cloud-flame of the wondrous dharma, emitting the pure light of every buddha's dense cloud of jeweled flame, filling the dharma-realm, universally manifesting within it every excellent and wondrous adornment. This is the eighteenth. Next there is a mark of a great being named Cloud of Awakening to the Buddha-Lineage, adorned with measureless jeweled light, entirely endowed with a thousand wheels, pure both within and without, born from wholesome roots of ages past; its light pervasively illuminates the worlds of the ten directions, kindling the sun of wisdom, proclaiming the ocean of dharma far and wide. This is the nineteenth. Next there is a mark of a great being named Cloud of Manifesting the Mastery of Every Tathāgata's Mark, adorned with every kind of jeweled necklace and vaidūrya jeweled flower, unfurling a great jeweled flame that fills the dharma-realm, universally manifesting within it measureless buddhas of the past, future, and present, equal in number to the motes of dust in every buddha-land, valiant and fearless like a lion king, their forms, colors, and wisdom entirely complete. This is the twentieth.
次有大人相，名：遍照一切法界雲，如來寶相清淨莊嚴，放大光明普照法界，顯現一切無量無邊諸佛菩薩智慧妙藏，是為二十一。次有大人相，名：毘盧遮那如來相雲，上妙寶華及毘瑠璃清淨妙月以為莊嚴，悉放無量百千萬億摩尼寶光，充滿一切虛空法界，於中示現無量佛剎，皆有如來結跏趺坐，是為二十二。次有大人相，名：普照一切佛光明雲，眾寶妙燈以為莊嚴，放淨光明遍照十方一切世界，悉現諸佛轉於法輪，是為二十三。次有大人相，名：普現一切莊嚴雲，種種寶焰以為莊嚴，放淨光明充滿法界，念念常現不可說不可說一切諸佛與諸菩薩坐於道場，是為二十四。
Next there is a mark of a great being named Cloud Pervasively Illuminating the Entire Dharma-Realm, the tathāgata's jeweled mark purely adorned, emitting great light that universally illuminates the dharma-realm, displaying the measureless, boundless, wondrous treasury of wisdom of every buddha and bodhisattva. This is the twenty-first. Next there is a mark of a great being named Cloud of the Mark of Vairocana Tathāgata, adorned with the finest, most supreme jeweled flowers and a pure, wondrous moon of vaidūrya, entirely emitting measureless hundreds of thousands of koṭis of maṇi-jewel light, filling the whole of empty space and the dharma-realm, manifesting within it measureless buddha-lands, each with a tathāgata seated cross-legged. This is the twenty-second. Next there is a mark of a great being named Cloud Universally Illuminating Every Buddha's Light, adorned with every manner of jeweled, wondrous lamp, emitting pure light that pervasively illuminates every world of the ten directions, entirely manifesting every buddha turning the dharma-wheel. This is the twenty-third. Next there is a mark of a great being named Cloud Universally Manifesting Every Adornment, adorned with every manner of jeweled flame, emitting pure light that fills the dharma-realm, in thought after thought constantly manifesting unspeakable, unspeakable buddhas and bodhisattvas seated at the seat of awakening. This is the twenty-fourth.
毘盧遮那如來相雲 — Cloud of the Mark of Vairocana Tathāgata. This is the first time Vairocana's name has appeared directly inside one of the thirty-two crown marks. The sūtra's own hero description names Vairocana as the buddha whose vision the entire text unfolds; here, twenty-two marks into a description of a body, that same name surfaces as the label for a single mark among many, rather than as the subject the whole chapter is ultimately describing.
