The Brow, Eye, Nose, and Tongue
Unlike the crown, which held thirty-two marks in a single location, the brow, the eye, and the nose each hold exactly one mark apiece — before the tongue reopens the earlier abundance with four marks of its own, one of them tied directly to the tathāgata's smile.
One Mark Each, Then the Tongue Reopens
The brow, the eye, and the nose are each given a single mark before the tongue arrives with four marks of its own — one tied directly to the tathāgata's smile, whose light brings coolness to every mind that receives it.
「佛子！如來眉間有大人相，名：遍法界光明雲，摩尼寶華以為莊嚴，放大光明，具眾寶色，猶如日月洞徹清淨，其光普照十方國土，於中顯現一切佛身，復出妙音宣暢法海，是為三十三。如來眼有大人相，名：自在普見雲，以眾妙寶而為莊嚴，摩尼寶光清淨映徹，普見一切皆無障礙，是為三十四。如來鼻有大人相，名：一切神通智慧雲，清淨妙寶以為莊嚴，眾寶色光彌覆其上，於中出現無量化佛坐寶蓮華，往諸世界為一切菩薩、一切眾生演不思議諸佛法海，是為三十五。
"Sons of the Buddha! Between the tathāgata's eyebrows there is a mark of a great being named Cloud of Light Pervading the Dharma-Realm, adorned with maṇi jeweled flowers, emitting great light, endowed with every jeweled color, clear and pure like the sun and moon; its light universally illuminates the lands of the ten directions, displaying within it every buddha-body, and further emitting a wondrous sound, proclaiming the ocean of dharma far and wide. This is the thirty-third. The tathāgata's eye has a mark of a great being named Cloud of Universal Seeing with Mastery, adorned with every kind of wondrous jewel, the light of its maṇi jewel pure and translucent, universally seeing everything entirely without obstruction. This is the thirty-fourth. The tathāgata's nose has a mark of a great being named Cloud of Every Spiritual Power and Wisdom, adorned with pure, wondrous jewels, the colored light of every jewel spreading over it entirely, within which measureless transformation-buddhas appear, seated upon jeweled lotus flowers, journeying to every world to expound the inconceivable ocean of buddha-dharma for the sake of every bodhisattva and every sentient being. This is the thirty-fifth.
如來舌有大人相，名：示現音聲影像雲，眾色妙寶以為莊嚴，宿世善根之所成就，其舌廣長遍覆一切諸世界海，如來若或熙怡微笑，必放一切摩尼寶光，其光普照十方法界，能令一切心得清涼，去、來、現在所有諸佛皆於光中炳然顯現，悉演廣大微妙之音，遍一切剎，住無量劫，是為三十六。如來舌復有大人相，名：法界雲，其掌安平，眾寶為嚴，放妙寶光色相圓滿，猶如眉間所放光明，其光普照一切佛剎，唯塵所成，無有自性，光中復現無量諸佛，咸發妙音說一切法，是為三十七。如來舌端有大人相，名：照法界光明雲，如意寶王以為莊嚴，自然恒出金色寶焰，於中影現一切佛海，復震妙音充滿一切無邊世界，一一音中具一切音，悉演妙法，聽者心悅，經無量劫玩味不忘，是為三十八。如來舌端復有大人相，名：照耀法界雲，摩尼寶王以為嚴飾，演眾色相微妙光明，充滿十方無量國土，盡于法界靡不清淨，於中悉有無量諸佛及諸菩薩各吐妙音種種開示，一切菩薩現前聽受，是為三十九。
The tathāgata's tongue has a mark of a great being named Cloud of Manifesting the Reflection of Sound, adorned with every kind of colored, wondrous jewel, accomplished through wholesome roots planted in ages past; the tongue, broad and long, spreads over the entire ocean of every world; whenever the tathāgata smiles with delight, they invariably emit the light of every maṇi jewel, and that light universally illuminates the dharma-realm of the ten directions, able to bring coolness to every mind; every buddha of the past, future, and present appears brilliantly within that light, entirely expounding a vast and subtle sound, pervading every land, abiding there for measureless kalpas. This is the thirty-sixth. The tathāgata's tongue further has a mark of a great being named Cloud of the Dharma-Realm; its surface is level and even, adorned with every jewel, emitting the wondrous jeweled light of perfectly complete form and color, just like the light emitted from between the eyebrows; that light universally illuminates every buddha-land, formed only of motes of dust, without any own-nature; within the light, measureless buddhas again appear, every one giving voice to a wondrous sound, teaching every dharma. This is the thirty-seventh. The tip of the tathāgata's tongue has a mark of a great being named Cloud of Light Illuminating the Dharma-Realm, adorned with wish-fulfilling king jewels, naturally and constantly emitting a golden jeweled flame, within which the ocean of every buddha appears in reflection, and further resounding with a wondrous sound that fills every boundless world; within each and every sound, every sound is contained, entirely expounding the wondrous dharma, so that whoever hears it delights in their mind, savoring it without forgetting for measureless kalpas. This is the thirty-eighth. The tip of the tathāgata's tongue further has a mark of a great being named Cloud Shining Brightly Throughout the Dharma-Realm, adorned with maṇi king jewels, expounding the subtle and wondrous light of every color and form, filling the measureless lands of the ten directions, so that throughout the entire dharma-realm there is nowhere left unpurified; within it there are measureless buddhas and bodhisattvas, each one uttering a wondrous sound, disclosing every manner of teaching, and every bodhisattva appears before them to listen and receive it. This is the thirty-ninth.
如來若或熙怡微笑，必放一切摩尼寶光……能令一切心得清涼 — whenever the tathāgata smiles with delight, they invariably emit the light of every maṇi jewel … able to bring coolness to every mind. This is the first mark in the chapter tied to a specific, momentary gesture rather than a permanent feature of the body — the light does not simply exist on the tongue, it is released each time the tathāgata smiles, coinciding an ordinary human expression with an effect reaching every buddha of the three times.
