A Vision of Jeweled Lotus Flowers
Having attained the great dedication and the grounds it brings, the sons of heaven see lotus flowers beyond counting, each holding a seated bodhisattva radiating buddhas of its own; in gratitude they transform their very pores into clouds of flowers and fragrance, whose scent alone can dissolve every hindrance in whoever receives it.
Flowers, Fragrance, and a Golden Net
A vision of lotus-seated bodhisattvas gives way to an offering of clouds from every pore, whose fragrance dissolves the ten thousand afflictions in whoever it touches, and whose canopy plants a single seed leading to the stage of a wheel-turning king adorned with a golden net.
"At that time, the sons of heaven, having heard the teaching of Samantabhadra's vast and great dedication of merit, and because they had attained the ten grounds, and because they had gained the samādhi adorned with every power, and because they had, with pure deeds of the three kinds equal in number to sentient beings, repented of every grave obstruction, at once beheld seven-jeweled lotus flowers as numerous as motes of dust in a hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of buddha-lands; upon each and every flower sat a bodhisattva in full lotus posture, emitting great light; from each and every minor mark of those bodhisattvas issued light equal in number to sentient beings; and within that light were buddhas equal in number to sentient beings, seated in full lotus posture, expounding the dharma according to the mind of each sentient being — and yet not even the smallest portion of the power of the samādhi of freedom from defilement had thereby been manifested. "At that time, those sons of heaven, from the flowers offered above and further from each and every pore upon their own bodies, transformed themselves into wondrous clouds of flowers equal in number to sentient beings, and offered them to Vairocana Tathāgata, scattering them upon the Buddha, so that all of them came to rest upon the Buddha's body. Their clouds of fragrance rained down universally upon worlds as numerous as motes of dust in measureless buddha-lands.
Whatever sentient being's body was touched by that fragrance, their body became peaceful and joyful, just as a monk who has entered the fourth dhyāna, and every obstruction of karma was thereby dissolved. Whoever heard of it, those sentient beings, with regard to form, sound, fragrance, taste, and touch, possess five hundred inward afflictions and also five hundred outward afflictions — twenty-one thousand for those of predominantly greedy conduct, twenty-one thousand for those of predominantly hateful conduct, twenty-one thousand for those of predominantly deluded conduct, and twenty-one thousand for those of evenly mixed conduct — and came to know that all of these are utterly empty and false. Having known this, they accomplished the wholesome root of the pure light of mastery of the cloud of the fragrance-banner. Whatever sentient being saw its canopy planted a single wholesome root equal to a Ganges-river's sands toward the stage of the pure golden-net wheel-turning king. "Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva dwelling in this stage of wheel-turning king teaches and transforms sentient beings throughout worlds as numerous as motes of dust in a hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of buddha-lands. Son of the Buddha! Just as, in the world Bright Mirror, Tathāgata Wisdom of the Moon constantly has monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen from measureless worlds manifest their own bodies and come to hear the dharma, expounding widely the matters of his past lives without ever once ceasing even for a single thought, and whatever sentient being hears that buddha's name is certain to attain rebirth in that buddha's land — a bodhisattva abiding in the stage of the pure golden-net wheel-turning king is likewise just the same: whoever momentarily encounters his light is certain to attain the bodhisattva's tenth ground, through the power of wholesome roots cultivated beforehand.
而猶未現離垢三昧少分之力 — and yet not even the smallest portion of the power of the samādhi of freedom from defilement had thereby been manifested. Even after the drum's entire teaching on repentance and this vision of buddha-bearing lotus flowers beyond counting, the text insists this display is still only a fraction of what the named samādhi actually holds — a deliberate undercutting of the vision's own grandeur, keeping the samādhi itself just out of reach of any single description offered so far.
