The Practices of Samantabhadra Begins

Samantabhadra returns as speaker to open a new chapter with a stark warning: of every fault a bodhisattva could commit, none is graver than a single moment of anger directed at another bodhisattva, since that one thought alone opens a hundred myriad gates of obstruction — and he begins to name them, one after another.

No Greater Fault Than Anger at a Bodhisattva

Samantabhadra opens the chapter by naming the single fault he considers gravest above all others, then begins an unbroken enumeration of the obstructions that single fault brings into being.

爾時,普賢菩薩摩訶薩復告諸菩薩大眾言:「佛子!如向所演,此但隨眾生根器所宜,略說如來少分境界。何以故?諸佛世尊,為諸眾生,無智作惡,計我、我所,執著於身,顛倒疑惑,邪見分別,與諸結縛恒共相應,隨生死流遠如來道故,出興于世。佛子!我不見一法為大過失,如諸菩薩於他菩薩起瞋心者。何以故?佛子!若諸菩薩於餘菩薩起瞋恚心,即成就百萬障門故。何等為百萬障?所謂:不見菩提障;不聞正法障;生不淨世界障;生諸惡趣障;生諸難處障;多諸疾病障;多被謗毀障;生頑鈍諸趣障;壞失正念障;闕少智慧障;眼障;耳障;鼻障;舌障;身障;意障;惡知識障;惡伴黨障;樂習小乘障;樂近凡庸障;不信樂大威德人障;樂與離正見人同住障;生外道家障;住魔境界障;離佛正教障;不見善友障;善根留難障;增不善法障;得下劣處障;生邊地障;生惡人家障;生惡神中障;生惡龍、惡夜叉、惡乾闥婆、惡阿脩羅、惡迦樓羅、惡緊那羅、惡摩睺羅伽、惡羅剎中障;

At that time, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva addressed the great assembly of bodhisattvas once more, saying: "Sons of the Buddha! What has been expounded so far has only been a brief account of a small portion of the tathāgata's own state, given according to what suits the faculties of sentient beings. Why is this? Every buddha, every world-honored one, appears in the world for the sake of sentient beings who, lacking wisdom, do evil, reckon a self and what belongs to a self, cling to their own body, are inverted in thought and beset with doubt, hold false views and discriminate, are forever bound together with every fetter, and follow the stream of birth and death far from the tathāgata's path. Sons of the Buddha! I see no single fault so grave as when a bodhisattva gives rise to a mind of anger toward another bodhisattva. Why is this? Sons of the Buddha! If a bodhisattva gives rise to a mind of anger and hatred toward a fellow bodhisattva, this alone brings to completion a hundred myriad gates of obstruction. What are these hundred myriad obstructions? They are: the obstruction of not beholding awakening; the obstruction of not hearing the true dharma; the obstruction of being born into an impure world; the obstruction of being born into an evil destiny; the obstruction of being born into a place of difficulty; the obstruction of much illness; the obstruction of being much slandered; the obstruction of being born among dull and stubborn destinies; the obstruction of losing right mindfulness; the obstruction of lacking wisdom; the obstruction of the eye; the obstruction of the ear; the obstruction of the nose; the obstruction of the tongue; the obstruction of the body; the obstruction of the mind; the obstruction of evil companions; the obstruction of an evil retinue; the obstruction of delighting in the practice of the lesser vehicle; the obstruction of drawing near to the common and mediocre; the obstruction of not having faith in and delight for those of great majestic virtue; the obstruction of delighting to dwell together with those who have departed from right view; the obstruction of being born into a household of outsider teachings; the obstruction of dwelling in the domain of Māra; the obstruction of departing from the Buddha's true teaching; the obstruction of not beholding a good friend; the obstruction of hindrance to one's wholesome roots; the obstruction of increasing unwholesome dharmas; the obstruction of attaining an inferior station; the obstruction of being born in a border region; the obstruction of being born into an evil person's household; the obstruction of being born among evil spirits; the obstruction of being born among evil nāgas, evil yakṣas, evil gandharvas, evil asuras, evil garuḍas, evil kiṃnaras, evil mahoragas, or evil rākṣasas;

我不見一法為大過失,如諸菩薩於他菩薩起瞋心者 — I see no single fault so grave as when a bodhisattva gives rise to a mind of anger toward another bodhisattva. This opens the chapter with an unusually absolute claim: not killing, not stealing, not any of the traditionally graver transgressions, but anger between bodhisattvas specifically is named as the worst of all faults, its severity measured by the sheer scale of the list that immediately follows — a single mental state answered with a hundred myriad distinct consequences.
