Purity, Wisdom, Universal Entry, and Sublime Mind
Each set of ten dharmas becomes the foundation for the next: the ten dharmas already given yield ten kinds of purity, which yield ten kinds of vast wisdom, which yield ten kinds of mutual entry between the one and the all, which yield ten sublime abidings of mind — a structure of nested attainment rather than a single flat list.
Purity and Wisdom, Then the One and the All
Purity and wisdom follow the ten dharmas already given; then the list turns to ten pairs describing the one entering the all and the all entering the one, before closing with ten sublime places for the mind to abide.
"Sons of the Buddha! Once a bodhisattva-mahāsattva dwells securely in these ten dharmas, they are thereby able to be endowed with ten kinds of purity. What are these ten? They are: the purity of penetrating the profound dharma; the purity of drawing near to good spiritual friends; the purity of guarding and upholding every buddha-dharma; the purity of fully understanding the realm of empty space; the purity of entering deeply into the dharma-realm; the purity of contemplating the boundless mind; the purity of sharing the same wholesome roots with every bodhisattva; the purity of not clinging to any kalpa; the purity of contemplating the three times; and the purity of practicing every buddha-dharma. This is the ten. "Sons of the Buddha! Once a bodhisattva-mahāsattva dwells in these ten dharmas, they are thereby endowed with ten kinds of vast wisdom. What are these ten? They are: the wisdom of knowing the mental conduct of every sentient being; the wisdom of knowing the karmic retribution of every sentient being; the wisdom of knowing every buddha-dharma; the wisdom of knowing the profound and hidden principles of every buddha-dharma; the wisdom of knowing every dhāraṇī gate; the wisdom of knowing every eloquence of letters; the wisdom of skillfully knowing the languages, sounds, and modes of speech of every sentient being; the wisdom of universally manifesting one's own body in every world; the wisdom of universally manifesting one's reflected image in every assembly; and the wisdom of possessing all-knowing wisdom in every place of receiving birth. This is the ten.
"Sons of the Buddha! Once a bodhisattva-mahāsattva dwells in these ten kinds of wisdom, they thereby attain entry into ten kinds of universal entry. What are these ten? They are: every world enters a single hair's breadth, and a single hair's breadth enters every world; the bodies of every sentient being enter a single body, and a single body enters the bodies of every sentient being; unspeakable kalpas enter a single thought, and a single thought enters unspeakable kalpas; every buddha-dharma enters a single dharma, and a single dharma enters every buddha-dharma; unspeakable places enter a single place, and a single place enters unspeakable places; unspeakable faculties enter a single faculty, and a single faculty enters unspeakable faculties; every faculty enters what is not a faculty, and what is not a faculty enters every faculty; every conception enters a single conception, and a single conception enters every conception; every spoken sound enters a single spoken sound, and a single spoken sound enters every spoken sound; and every one of the three times enters a single time, and a single time enters every one of the three times. This is the ten. "Sons of the Buddha! Having contemplated in this way, a bodhisattva-mahāsattva then abides in ten kinds of sublime mind. What are these ten? They are: abiding in the sublime mind toward the language and non-language of every world; abiding in the sublime mind toward the thoughts and conceptions of every sentient being, upon which nothing depends; abiding in the sublime mind toward the ultimate realm of empty space; abiding in the sublime mind toward the boundless dharma-realm; abiding in the sublime mind toward every profound and hidden buddha-dharma; abiding in the sublime mind toward the profound dharma of non-differentiation; abiding in the sublime mind that dispels every doubt; abiding in the sublime mind toward the equality and non-differentiation of every world; abiding in the sublime mind toward the equality of every buddha of the three times; and abiding in the sublime mind toward the measureless power of every buddha. This is the ten.
一切世界入一毛道,一毛道入一切世界 — every world enters a single hair's breadth, and a single hair's breadth enters every world. Each pairing in the ten kinds of universal entry states its claim twice, once in each direction — the large into the small, then the small into the large — insisting that the relationship is not one-way containment but a genuine mutual entry, a structure echoed at the level of the whole passage, where each set of ten dharmas likewise both rests upon and opens onto the set before and after it.
