Countless Bodhisattvas Named Samantabhadra

The cascade of ten dharmas reaches its final tier — ten kinds of skillful wisdom — and Samantabhadra urges the assembly to receive this teaching with reverence; the ground quakes across worlds beyond counting, and bodhisattvas as numerous as motes of dust arrive from every direction, every one of them sharing the name Samantabhadra, to testify that his teaching holds equally everywhere.

Ten Kinds of Skillful Wisdom, Then the World Itself Answers

The teaching's final tier of ten dharmas closes with an exhortation to uphold it; the world responds with quaking and rains of every kind of offering, and bodhisattvas identical in name to Samantabhadra himself arrive from beyond counting to bear witness.

"Sons of the Buddha! Once a bodhisattva-mahāsattva dwells in these ten kinds of sublime mind, they thereby attain ten kinds of skillful wisdom in the buddha-dharma. What are these ten? They are: the skillful wisdom of penetrating the profound buddha-dharma; the skillful wisdom of giving rise to the vast and great buddha-dharma; the skillful wisdom of expounding every manner of buddha-dharma; the skillful wisdom of realizing and entering the equal buddha-dharma; the skillful wisdom of clearly discerning the differentiated buddha-dharma; the skillful wisdom of understanding the undifferentiated buddha-dharma; the skillful wisdom of entering deeply into the adorned buddha-dharma; the skillful wisdom of entering the buddha-dharma through a single skillful means; the skillful wisdom of entering the buddha-dharma through measureless skillful means; the skillful wisdom of knowing the non-differentiation of the boundless buddha-dharma; and the skillful wisdom of never retreating from any buddha-dharma at all, through the power of one's own mind and one's own strength. This is the ten. "Sons of the Buddha! Having heard this dharma, all should give rise to the resolve to receive and uphold it with reverence. Why is this? Whatever bodhisattva-mahāsattva upholds this dharma, exerting but little effort, swiftly attains unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening, becomes entirely endowed with every buddha-dharma, and becomes wholly equal to the dharma of every buddha of the three times."

Ru-Yi Translation

At that time, through the Buddha's spiritual power, and because the dharma is such as this, worlds as numerous as motes of dust in ten unspeakable hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas, in each of the ten directions, quaked in six ways, and there rained down clouds of flowers, clouds of incense, clouds of powdered incense, robes, canopies, banners, and streamers, maṇi jewels, and every kind of adornment, surpassing anything found among the gods; there rained down clouds of musical instruments, clouds of bodhisattvas, unspeakable clouds of the tathāgata's form and countenance, unspeakable clouds proclaiming excellent praise for the tathāgata, clouds of the tathāgata's voice filling the entire dharma-realm, unspeakable clouds adorning the worlds, unspeakable clouds increasing awakening, unspeakable clouds of shining light, and unspeakable clouds of spiritual power expounding the dharma. Just as, within the bodhisattva's palace at the seat of awakening beneath the bodhi tree, in the four continents of this world, one beheld the tathāgata attain perfect awakening and expound this dharma, so too was it just the same throughout every world of the ten directions. At that time, through the Buddha's spiritual power, and because the dharma is such as this, beyond worlds as numerous as motes of dust in ten unspeakable buddha-lands, in each of the ten directions, there were bodhisattva-mahāsattvas as numerous as motes of dust in ten buddha-lands who arrived at this land, filling the ten directions, and spoke thus: "Excellent, excellent! Son of the Buddha! You have indeed been able to expound this profound dharma of the great vows and predictions of every buddha tathāgata. Son of the Buddha! We are all alike named Samantabhadra, and have each come to this land from the presence of the tathāgata Universal Banner of Mastery, in the world Universally Supreme; all of us, through the Buddha's spiritual power, expound this very dharma in every place; and this assembly, and what is spoken here, are in every place equal, without increase or decrease. All of us, sustained by the Buddha's majestic and spiritual power, have come to this seat of awakening to bear witness for you.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

我等一切同名普賢 — we are all alike named Samantabhadra. The bodhisattvas who arrive to bear witness do not merely resemble Samantabhadra or act in his manner; they share his exact name, coming from a different buddha under a different tathāgata in a different world, which the text offers as proof that the teaching itself holds identically everywhere — the sameness of name standing in for the sameness of the dharma being confirmed.
