Every World Within a Single Mote of Dust
Having reached the most excellent ground through practice, the bodhisattva's vision turns to a scale that could unsettle any listener — every world contained within a single mote of dust, every mote of dust containing every world in turn — before surveying how lands differ in purity, and how measureless lands are nonetheless known as one.
A Vision to Unsettle the Mind
The verse warns its own listeners before it makes its claim: seeing every world within a single mote of dust could drive an unprepared mind to madness — and then makes the claim regardless, in both directions at once.
The bodhisattva, practicing thus, reaches the ultimate path of Samantabhadra; giving rise to the sun of pure wisdom, it universally illuminates the dharma-realm.
The kalpas of the future age, and the unspeakable lands within them, are all entirely known within a single thought, without any discrimination toward them.
One who practices is able to enter this most excellent ground; of this bodhisattva dharma, I shall tell but a small portion.
Wisdom without any boundary, penetrating a buddha's own realm, entering everything skillfully, their practice never retreating.
Endowed with the wisdom of Samantabhadra, having fulfilled the vow of Samantabhadra, entering into peerless wisdom — I shall now tell of that practice.
Within a single mote of dust, every world is entirely seen; should sentient beings hear of this, their minds would be thrown into confusion and madness.
Just as with a single mote of dust, so too is it with every mote of dust; every world entirely enters within it — inconceivable is this.
Within each and every mote of dust there is the dharma of the ten directions and the three times; the destinies and lands are all measureless, yet all can be distinctly known.
Within each and every mote of dust there are measureless kinds of buddha-lands, every kind of them measureless, yet within a single one there is nothing left unknown.
Everything that exists within the dharma-realm, every manner of differing form, every destiny and kind each distinct — all of it can be distinctly known.
Entering deeply into subtle wisdom, distinguishing every world, the coming-into-being and dissolution of every kalpa can all be clearly told.
Knowing whether kalpas are long or short, that the three times are but a single thought, and whether the multitude of practices are the same or different — all of it can be distinctly known.
Entering deeply into every world, whether vast or not vast, a single body contains measureless lands, and a single land contains measureless bodies.
Every differing kind of world that exists throughout the ten directions, however vast or measureless its form, can all be entirely known.
Within every one of the three times, throughout measureless lands, being endowed with profound wisdom, one fully comprehends their coming-into-being and their ruin.
The worlds of the ten directions, some coming into being and some falling into ruin — unspeakable as this is, the worthy and virtuous fully understand it in depth.
There are lands adorned with every manner of ground, and their destinies likewise so — this arises from the purity of their karma.
There are worlds of measureless kinds of defilement — this arises from what sentient beings themselves have brought about, everything according to their own conduct.
Measureless, boundless lands are known to be a single land; entering every land in this way, their number cannot be known.
Every world entirely enters within a single land, yet the worlds do not become one, nor is there any confusion among them.
Worlds exist facing upward or overturned, some high and some low again — all of this is merely the conception of sentient beings, yet all of it can be distinctly known.
The vast and expansive worlds are measureless and without limit; knowing their every kind to be one, and knowing the one to be every kind.
The sons of the Buddha who follow Samantabhadra, able through the wisdom of Samantabhadra, fully comprehend the number of every land — a number without any boundary.
眾生若聞者,迷亂心發狂 — should sentient beings hear of this, their minds would be thrown into confusion and madness. The verse pauses to acknowledge, in its own words, how disorienting its central claim actually is — not simply asserting the mutual containment of worlds and dust as a fact to be accepted, but naming the vertigo an ordinary listener would feel on first hearing it, before continuing to describe that same vertiginous vision at length regardless.
Part 631 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-six, 普賢行品, in fascicle forty-nine. Part 632 continues the verse recitation with a bodhisattva knowing the passing of kalpas as a single thought, and manifesting bodies without number to teach in every assembly.
