Part 632 of the collection · Fascicle 49 of 80 · 普賢行品第三十六 · T279

Manifesting Bodies Without Number

The verse now moves across all three times in turn — past worlds and their adornments known in a single thought, future buddhas' vows and grounds, and present buddhas whose eloquence, faculties, and wisdom are without any obstruction — before dissolving even the distinction between worldly names and dream, and measureless kalpas into a single thought.

Unspeakable Names, Known Only to a Buddha

The transformation of every world, sentient being, dharma, and buddha reaches a limit even the sutra itself concedes: not even every kalpa could exhaust the names of every world and every tathāgata, except through a buddha's own disclosure.

Ru-Yi Translation

Knowing the transformation of every world, the transformation of lands, the transformation of sentient beings, the transformation of dharmas, and the transformation of every buddha — all of it reaches its ultimate limit.
Every world, whether a subtle land or a vast one, is adorned in every manner of differing way, and all of it arises from karma.
Measureless sons of the Buddha, skillfully learning to enter the dharma-realm, possess spiritual power and mastery that reach everywhere throughout the ten directions.

Even for a number of kalpas equal to the number of sentient beings, telling the names of those worlds could still not exhaust them, except through a buddha's own disclosure.
The worlds and the tathāgatas, and their every manner of name — telling of them through measureless kalpas could still not exhaust them.
How much more so the most excellent wisdom, the dharma of every buddha of the three times, born from the dharma-realm and filling the tathāgata's own ground!

A pure, unobstructed mindfulness, and a boundless, unobstructed wisdom, distinctly expounding the dharma-realm, thereby reach the further shore.

Ru-Yi Translation

Every world of the past, whether vast or subtle, along with every adornment accomplished through cultivation, is entirely known within a single thought.
Within them, the lions among people, having cultivated every manner of buddha-practice, attained perfect and complete awakening, and displayed every mastery.

And so it is with the future age, its measureless kalpas one after another; every honored one among people, every bodhisattva, is entirely known.
Every vow and practice, and every domain there is — diligently cultivating in this way, awakening is attained within it.
Also known are their assemblies, their lifespans, and the beings they transform; through these very dharma-gates, they turn the dharma-wheel for the multitude.
The bodhisattva, knowing thus, dwells in the ground of Samantabhadra's practice; their wisdom entirely clear, they give rise to every buddha.

Comprehended within the present age are every buddha-land there is; entering deeply into these lands, one penetrates the dharma-realm.
Within those worlds, every buddha of the present age has attained mastery over the dharma, their discourse without any obstruction.
Also known are their assemblies, the power of their pure lands' responsive transformations; throughout measureless koṭis of kalpas, this alone is constantly contemplated.

Ru-Yi Translation

The honored tamer of the world, and every majestic spiritual power there is, and the inexhaustible treasury of wisdom — all of it is entirely known.
Giving rise to an unobstructed eye, unobstructed ear, nose, and body, and an unobstructed broad and long tongue, they are able to bring the multitude to rejoice.
The most excellent unobstructed mind, vast and universally pure, its wisdom pervading and filling everywhere, entirely knows the dharma of the three times.

Skillfully learning every transformation — the transformation of lands, of sentient beings, of the world, and of taming — they reach the ultimate shore of transformation.
The manifold differences of the world all arise from the abiding of conception; entering a buddha's own skillful wisdom, all of this becomes entirely clear.

In unspeakable assemblies, a body is manifested in each and every one, causing all to behold the tathāgata and be delivered without limit.
The profound wisdom of every buddha is like the sun rising over the world, universally appearing throughout every land without ever ceasing.

Fully understanding that every world is but a provisional name without any reality, that sentient beings and worlds alike are like a dream, like a gleam of light or a shadow.
Toward the dharmas of every world, giving rise to no view of discrimination; one who skillfully departs from discrimination sees no discrimination either.
Measureless, countless kalpas, once understood, are but a single thought; knowing that thought too is without any thought — thus is the world truly seen.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

知念亦無念,如是見世間 — knowing that thought too is without any thought — thus is the world truly seen. The verse's long meditation on scale — every world in a thought, measureless kalpas compressed to an instant — arrives here at a final reversal: even the single thought that holds all of this is itself said to be without thought, so that the achievement being described is not a bigger or faster kind of knowing, but the dissolution of the knowing act's own claim to substance.
