Never Entering Final Nirvāṇa
A bodhisattva brings the unsettled to rest and shows the settled the seat of awakening, all without ever dwelling in reality's ultimate limit or entering final nirvāṇa; the verse then measures buddha-bodies against the bodies of every sentient being, before tracing every differing world back to a differing conception in the mind, and closing on the name earned by such practice — Samantabhadra himself.
Bringing Beings to Rest Without Resting
A bodhisattva pervades the dharma-realm without attachment, settling the unsettled and revealing the seat of awakening to the settled, all while dwelling in neither the ultimate limit of reality nor final nirvāṇa itself.
The profound dharma of every buddha, vast and profoundly tranquil, is a profound and measureless wisdom that knows every profound destiny.
The bodhisattva, free of delusion and inversion, their mind pure and forever unbroken, skillfully uses spiritual power to deliver measureless sentient beings.
Those not yet settled they cause to be settled, and to those already settled they reveal the seat of awakening; pervading the dharma-realm in this way, their mind clings to nothing at all.
Not dwelling in the ultimate limit of reality, not entering final nirvāṇa, they pervade the world in this way, awakening the multitude of beings.
The categories of dharma and the categories of sentient beings, fully known yet clung to in nothing, they universally rain down the rain of dharma, saturating every world.
Universally, throughout every world, in thought after thought they attain perfect awakening, and yet cultivate bodhisattva practice without ever once retreating.
Every manner of body in the world is entirely and fully known; knowing the dharma of the body in this way, one thereby attains the body of every buddha.
Universally knowing every sentient being, every kalpa, and every land, the boundless reach of the ten directions is nowhere left unentered by the ocean of wisdom.
The bodies of sentient beings are measureless, and for each and every one a body is manifested; a buddha's body is without any boundary, and the wise entirely behold it.
What is known within a single thought brings forth every tathāgata; extolling this through measureless kalpas could still not exhaust it.
Every buddha is able to manifest a body, entering final nirvāṇa in every place; within a single thought, measureless relics, each and every one distinct.
And so it is in the future age, for those who seek the fruit of buddhahood; their measureless minds of awakening are entirely known by resolute wisdom.
And so it is throughout the three times, for every tathāgata there is; all of it can be entirely known — this is called dwelling in the practice of Samantabhadra.
Distinctly knowing in this way the measureless grounds of practice, entering into the place of wisdom, its wheel never retreats.
A subtle and vast wisdom, entering deeply into the tathāgata's own domain — once entered, never retreating — this is called the wisdom of Samantabhadra.
Every most excellent, honored one universally enters a buddha's own domain; their practice never retreating, they attain unsurpassed awakening.
Measureless, boundless minds, each with their own differing karma, all arise from the accumulation of conception, and all of it is equally and fully known.
Defiled and undefiled, the mind still learning and the mind beyond learning, every unspeakable mind — all of it is fully known in thought after thought.
Fully understanding that it is neither one nor two, neither defiled nor pure, and moreover without any confusion, all of it arises from one's own conception.
Seeing all of this with complete clarity: every sentient being's mind and conception differ each from the other, giving rise to every manner of differing world.
Through skillful means such as these, cultivating every most excellent practice, being born through transformation from the buddha-dharma itself — this is what earns the name Samantabhadra.
不住於實際,不入於涅槃 — not dwelling in the ultimate limit of reality, not entering final nirvāṇa. This couplet refuses both halves of a pair that might otherwise seem like a single destination: reality's own ultimate limit and final nirvāṇa are named separately and both declined, so that the bodhisattva's activity in the world depends on settling into neither — a double negation rather than a single renunciation.
Part 634 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-six, 普賢行品, in fascicle forty-nine. Part 635 continues the verse recitation with how false conception gives rise to heaven and hell alike, and a bodhisattva's vision of the world as a net woven of thought.
