The Body's Verse Recap Concludes
The verse retraces its own steps through the moon that eclipses every star, the Brahmā king seen by all yet never divided, the physician-king whose preserved body still heals, and the wish-fulfilling jewel whose light alone brings the eye to purity — closing, for now, the entire teaching on how a bodhisattva should behold the tathāgata's body.
Every Simile, Retraced in Order
The verse closes exactly as the prose did — moon, Brahmā king, physician, and jewel, in the same order — leaving unchanged only the final image, of a wish-fulfilling jewel that grants nothing to those without the merit to receive it.
"Sentient beings without faith do not see the buddha, and yet the buddha still works his own true benefit for them; hearing his name and being touched by his light, through this they attain awakening in the end.
It is like the pure moon in empty space, able to eclipse every star and display its waxing and waning; within every body of water its reflection appears, and every one who gazes upon it sees it directly before them.
The tathāgata's own pure moon is likewise just the same: able to eclipse the remaining vehicles and display a lifespan long or short; universally appearing within the pure waters of the minds of gods and humans, everyone declares it to be directly before themselves.
It is like the Brahmā king dwelling in his own palace, universally appearing throughout every Brahmā realm of the trichiliocosm; every god and human alike beholds him, and yet in truth he divides no body toward any of them.
The appearance of every buddha's own body is likewise just the same, nowhere in the ten directions left unpervaded; his bodies, countless, cannot be reckoned, and yet he divides no body and makes no discrimination.
It is like a physician-king skilled in his own craft, whoever sees him has their illness entirely cured; though his own life has already ended, medicine applied to his body causes him to carry out his work exactly as before.
The most excellent physician-king is likewise just the same, endowed with skillful means and all-knowing wisdom; through his wondrous practice of ages past, he displays a buddha-body, and whatever sentient being sees it has their afflictions extinguished.
It is like the ocean, within which there is a king of jewels, universally emitting measureless light; whatever sentient being it touches becomes the same color as it, and whoever sees it has their eye made pure.
The most excellent king of jewels is likewise just the same: whoever is touched by its light becomes entirely the same color as it, and whoever thereby attains the opening of the five eyes breaks through every defiling darkness and dwells upon the buddha's own ground.
It is like a wish-fulfilling maṇi jewel, fulfilling whatever is sought entirely; sentient beings of little merit are unable to see it, though this is no discrimination on the jewel-king's own part.
The well-gone one's own king of jewels is likewise just the same, entirely fulfilling whatever desire and pleasure is sought; sentient beings without faith do not see the buddha, though this is no abandonment on the well-gone one's own part."
少福眾生不能見,非是寶王有分別 — sentient beings of little merit are unable to see it, though this is no discrimination on the jewel-king's own part. The final couplet of the verse recap restates the tenth mark's closing point in its cleanest form yet: whenever the tathāgata's own presence appears unequally given, the asymmetry belongs entirely to the receiver's own merit, never to any choice or withholding on the tathāgata's side — a distinction this whole run of similes has drawn, in one form or another, since the sun first illuminated the mountain peaks before the plains.
Fascicle 50 Complete
This completes fascicle fifty of eighty. Chapter thirty-seven, 如來出現品, continues into fascicle fifty-one, turning next to the tathāgata's own voice, which Part 654 will begin.
