The Great Rain of Dharma Falls

Ten separately named rains fall in careful order — first upon a bodhisattva seated at the very seat of awakening, down through every stage of the path, to those who seek only the two lesser vehicles and those merely accumulating wholesome roots — closing the tenth and final mark of the tathāgata's voice; the entire teaching then closes with ten kinds of measurelessness, matching the voice itself to space, the dharma-realm, and the three times.

Ten Rains for Ten Stages, Then Ten Measurelessnesses

The rain that has been so long delayed finally falls, precisely graded to the listener — from a bodhisattva at the very threshold of awakening down to a being only beginning to gather wholesome roots — before the entire teaching on the tathāgata's voice closes with a summary of ten ways that voice is itself measureless.

"Only then, from the tathāgata's own cloud of the great dharma-body, cloud of great loving-kindness and compassion, and cloud of great inconceivability, does he rain down an inconceivable, vast rain of dharma, causing every sentient being's body and mind alike to become pure. Namely: for a bodhisattva seated at the seat of awakening, he sends down a great rain of dharma named the Non-Differentiation of the Dharma-Realm; for a bodhisattva in their final existence, a great rain of dharma named the Bodhisattva's Own Sporting in the Tathāgata's Secret Teaching; for a bodhisattva bound to but a single further birth, a great rain of dharma named Pure and Universal Light; for a bodhisattva who has received the anointing, a great rain of dharma named Adorned by the Tathāgata's Own Adornments; for a bodhisattva who has attained forbearance, a great rain of dharma named the Flower of Merit's Jeweled Wisdom Blossoming Forth the Bodhisattva's Unceasing Practice of Great Compassion; for a bodhisattva dwelling in the practice of dedication, a great rain of dharma named Entering the Profound Gate of Manifest Transformation and Carrying Out Bodhisattva Practice Without Rest and Without Weariness; for a bodhisattva who has newly given rise to the mind of awakening, a great rain of dharma named Giving Rise to the Tathāgata's Own Great Loving-Kindness and Compassion That Rescues and Protects Sentient Beings; for sentient beings seeking the pratyekabuddha vehicle, a great rain of dharma named Deeply Knowing the Dharma of Dependent Origination, Departing Far from the Two Extremes, and Attaining the Indestructible Fruit of Liberation; for sentient beings seeking the śrāvaka vehicle, a great rain of dharma named Severing Every Enemy of Affliction with the Sword of Great Wisdom; and for sentient beings still gathering wholesome roots, whether resolute or not yet resolute, a great rain of dharma named the One Able to Bring About the Accomplishment of Every Manner of Dharma-Gate and Give Rise to Great Joy. Sons of the Buddha! Every buddha tathāgata, according to the mind of each sentient being, rains down vast rains of dharma such as these, filling every boundless world. Sons of the Buddha! The tathāgata, the worthy one, the perfectly and fully awakened one, has a mind that is equal, begrudging the dharma to no one; it is only because the faculties and desires of sentient beings differ that the rain of dharma he sends down displays a difference. This is the tenth mark of the tathāgata's voice — bodhisattva-mahāsattvas should know it thus.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Furthermore, Sons of the Buddha! You should know that the tathāgata's voice has ten kinds of measurelessness. What are these ten? They are: measureless like the realm of empty space, because it reaches every place; measureless like the dharma-realm, because there is nowhere it fails to pervade; measureless like the realm of sentient beings, because it causes every mind to rejoice; measureless like every karmic action, because it speaks of their fruits and retributions; measureless like every affliction, because it entirely extinguishes them; measureless like the languages of every sentient being, because it is heard according to each one's own understanding; measureless like the desires and understandings of every sentient being, because it universally observes and delivers them; measureless like the three times, because it has no boundary or limit; measureless like wisdom, because it distinguishes everything; and measureless like a buddha's own domain, because it enters the dharma-realm of every buddha. Sons of the Buddha! The voice of the tathāgata, the worthy one, the perfectly and fully awakened one, accomplishes measurelessness such as these, an asaṃkhyeya in number — bodhisattva-mahāsattvas should know it thus."

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

如來、應、正等覺其心平等,於法無吝,但以眾生根欲不同,所雨法雨示有差別 — the tathāgata's mind is equal, begrudging the dharma to no one; it is only because the faculties and desires of sentient beings differ that the rain of dharma he sends down displays a difference. This closing line of the tenth mark restates, one final time, the principle that has run through every rain-simile in this section since Anavatapta's own water: whatever asymmetry appears in what beings receive belongs entirely to the beings themselves, never to any withholding on the tathāgata's part — the ten named rains that precede it, each addressed to a single, specific stage of practice, are the clearest demonstration of that principle the chapter has offered yet.
