Four Blazing Jewels at the Ocean's Floor
Four jewels at the bottom of the ocean turn water into milk, milk into curd, curd into butter, and butter finally into clarified butter consumed entirely away, keeping the ocean from ever rising past its own bounds; the tathāgata's own four jewels of wisdom work the same transformation on a bodhisattva's own attainments, dissolving distraction into samādhi, samādhi into spiritual power, spiritual power into radiant effort, and radiant effort finally into the tathāgata's own effortless ground.
Water Refined Away to Nothing, Effort Refined Away to Nothing
Four ocean-floor jewels progressively refine water down through milk, curd, and butter until it is consumed entirely away; the tathāgata's own four jewels of wisdom perform the identical operation on a bodhisattva's practice, refining distraction into stillness and finally consuming even the subtlest deliberate effort until only the tathāgata's own effortless ground remains.
「復次，佛子！譬如大海，有四熾然光明大寶布在其底，性極猛熱，常能飲縮百川所注無量大水，是故大海無有增減。何等為四？一名：日藏，二名：離潤，三名：火焰光，四名：盡無餘。佛子！若大海中無此四寶，從四天下乃至有頂，其中所有悉被漂沒。佛子！此日藏大寶光明照觸，海水悉變為乳；離潤大寶光明照觸，其乳悉變為酪；火焰光大寶光明照觸，其酪悉變為酥；盡無餘大寶光明照觸，其酥變成醍醐；如火熾然，悉盡無餘。
"Furthermore, Sons of the Buddha! It is like the great ocean, at the floor of which are arrayed four blazing, radiant great jewels, whose nature is extremely fierce and hot, constantly able to drink up and reduce the measureless great waters poured in by every river, and it is for this reason that the great ocean neither rises nor falls. What are these four? The first is named Solar Treasury; the second is named Departed from Moisture; the third is named Flaming Light; the fourth is named Consuming Without Remainder. Sons of the Buddha! If the great ocean lacked these four jewels, everything from the four continents up to the highest heaven would be entirely submerged and swept away. Sons of the Buddha! Touched by the light of the great jewel Solar Treasury, the ocean's water is entirely transformed into milk; touched by the light of the great jewel Departed from Moisture, that milk is entirely transformed into curd; touched by the light of the great jewel Flaming Light, that curd is entirely transformed into butter; touched by the light of the great jewel Consuming Without Remainder, that butter is transformed into clarified butter, which, like a blazing fire, is entirely consumed without remainder.
佛子！如來、應、正等覺大智慧海亦復如是，有四種大智慧寶，具足無量威德光明；此智寶光觸諸菩薩，乃至令得如來大智。何等為四？所謂：滅一切散善波浪大智慧寶、除一切法愛大智慧寶、慧光普照大智慧寶、與如來平等無邊無功用大智慧寶。佛子！諸菩薩修習一切助道法時，起無量散善波浪，一切世間天、人、阿脩羅所不能壞；如來以滅一切散善波浪大智慧寶光明觸彼菩薩，令捨一切散善波浪，持心一境，住於三昧；又以除一切法愛大智慧寶光明觸彼菩薩，令捨離三昧味著，起廣大神通；又以慧光普照大智慧寶光明觸彼菩薩，令捨所起廣大神通，住大明功用行；又以與如來平等無邊無功用大智慧寶光明觸彼菩薩，令捨所起大明功用行，乃至得如來平等地，息一切功用，令無有餘。佛子！若無如來此四智寶大光照觸，乃至有一菩薩得如來地，無有是處。佛子！是為如來心第五相，諸菩薩摩訶薩應如是知。
Sons of the Buddha! The great ocean of wisdom of the tathāgata, the worthy one, the perfectly and fully awakened one, is likewise just the same, possessing four kinds of great jewels of wisdom, endowed with measureless majestic light; the light of these jewels of wisdom touches every bodhisattva, bringing them even to the tathāgata's own great wisdom. What are these four? They are: the great jewel of wisdom that extinguishes every wave of scattered, wholesome practice; the great jewel of wisdom that removes every attachment to dharma; the great jewel of wisdom whose light of understanding universally illuminates; and the great jewel of wisdom that is equal to the tathāgata's own boundless and effortless state. Sons of the Buddha! When bodhisattvas cultivate every practice that assists the path, they give rise to measureless waves of scattered, wholesome practice, which no god, human, or asura of any world is able to destroy; the tathāgata, with the light of the great jewel of wisdom that extinguishes every wave of scattered, wholesome practice, touches that bodhisattva, causing them to relinquish every wave of scattered, wholesome practice, hold the mind to a single object, and dwell in samādhi. He further touches that bodhisattva with the light of the great jewel of wisdom that removes every attachment to dharma, causing them to relinquish their attachment to the taste of samādhi and give rise to vast spiritual powers. He further touches that bodhisattva with the light of the great jewel of wisdom whose light of understanding universally illuminates, causing them to relinquish the vast spiritual powers they have given rise to and dwell in the practice of great, radiant effort. He further touches that bodhisattva with the light of the great jewel of wisdom that is equal to the tathāgata's own boundless and effortless state, causing them to relinquish the practice of great, radiant effort they have given rise to, and to attain even the tathāgata's own ground of equality, where every effort is set to rest, leaving nothing remaining at all. Sons of the Buddha! Without the great light of these four jewels of wisdom touching them, it would never be possible for even a single bodhisattva to attain the tathāgata's own ground. Sons of the Buddha! This is the fifth mark of the tathāgata's mind — bodhisattva-mahāsattvas should know it thus.
令捨所起大明功用行，乃至得如來平等地，息一切功用，令無有餘 — causing them to relinquish the practice of great, radiant effort they have given rise to, and to attain even the tathāgata's own ground of equality, where every effort is set to rest, leaving nothing remaining at all. The four jewels form a single descending chain in which each attainment becomes the very thing the next jewel dissolves — distraction gives way to samādhi, samādhi's own pleasure gives way to spiritual power, spiritual power gives way to radiant effort, and radiant effort itself, the last and subtlest form of deliberate practice, is consumed entirely away, mirroring how the ocean-floor jewels reduce water to milk, milk to curd, curd to butter, and butter finally to nothing at all.
