The Mind Teaching's Verse Recap
Every mark of the tathāgata's mind returns here in a single pair of lines apiece — space with nothing to depend on, the ocean's hidden jewels, the medicine-king tree, a fire that cannot spare a blade of grass, the wind that both destroys and protects, and the scripture broken free from a single mote of dust — closing fascicle fifty-one with the teaching's own summary of itself.
Ten Marks, Ten Quatrain Pairs
The verse retraces every simile of the mind teaching at speed — space depending on nothing, the underground waters, the hidden jewels of the nāga and the ocean, the medicine-king tree, the unburnable and the unspreadable, the two winds, and finally the scripture broken free of its mote of dust — closing the entire section, and the fascicle, together.
"Sons of the Buddha! Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas should know the mind of the tathāgata, the worthy one, the perfectly and fully awakened one, through measureless, unobstructed, inconceivable, vast marks such as these." At that time, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva, wishing to illuminate this meaning once more, spoke in verse, saying: "If you wish to know the mind of every buddha, you should observe a buddha's own wisdom; a buddha's wisdom has no place to depend upon, like empty space, which depends on nothing.
The manifold delights of sentient beings, and every skillful means of wisdom, all depend on a buddha's own wisdom, yet a buddha's wisdom has nothing to rest upon.
The śrāvaka and the pratyekabuddha, and the liberation of every buddha, all depend upon the dharma-realm, and the dharma-realm neither increases nor decreases.
A buddha's wisdom is likewise just the same, giving rise to all-knowing wisdom, neither increasing nor decreasing, neither arising nor being exhausted.
It is like water flowing secretly beneath the ground: seek it, and it will always be found; without deliberation and without limit, its power reaches the ten directions.
A buddha's wisdom is likewise just the same, universally present within the minds of sentient beings; whoever diligently cultivates practice swiftly attains the light of wisdom.
It is like the nāga who has four pearls, giving rise to every treasure; placed in a deep and secret place, no ordinary person is able to see them.
The buddha's four wisdoms are likewise just the same, giving rise to all-knowing wisdom; no other person is able to see them, except only the great bodhisattvas.
It is like the ocean, which has four jewels, able to drink up every water, keeping the ocean from ever overflowing, and likewise neither rising nor falling.
The tathāgata's own wisdom is likewise just the same, stilling every wave and removing every attachment to dharma, vast and without any boundary, able to give rise to every buddha and bodhisattva.
From the lowest realm up to the highest heaven, throughout the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm, everything depends upon empty space, and empty space makes no discrimination.
The śrāvaka and the pratyekabuddha, and the wisdom of every bodhisattva, all depend upon a buddha's own wisdom, and a buddha's wisdom makes no discrimination.
The snow mountains have a medicine-king, named Inexhaustible Root, able to give rise to every tree, to root, stem, leaf, flower, and fruit.
A buddha's wisdom is likewise just the same, born from within the tathāgata's own lineage; having already attained awakening, it further gives rise to bodhisattva practice.
It is like a person holding dry grass and placing it into a kalpa-ending fire: even vajra itself would be pierced through by such a blaze, and there is no possibility of it not burning.
Every kalpa and land of the three times, and every sentient being within them — that grass might conceivably escape burning, but there is nothing at all this buddha fails to know.
There is a wind named Scattering Destruction, able to destroy the great trichiliocosm; were there no separate wind to stop it, its destruction would reach measureless worlds.
The wind of great wisdom is likewise just the same, extinguishing the afflictions of every bodhisattva; there is a separate, skillful wind that causes them to dwell securely in the tathāgata's own ground.
It is like there being a great scripture, its scale equal to the great trichiliocosm, dwelling within a single mote of dust, and likewise so within every mote of dust.
There is one person of clear intelligence, whose pure eye sees it entirely and clearly; breaking open the dust, he brings forth the scripture, universally benefiting sentient beings.
A buddha's wisdom is likewise just the same, pervading the minds of every sentient being, bound about by false thought, neither perceived nor known.
Every buddha's great compassion causes them to remove that false thought; it is in just this way that they appear, benefiting every bodhisattva."
彼草容不燒,此佛無不知 — that grass might conceivably escape burning, but there is nothing at all this buddha fails to know. The verse sharpens the prose version of this same simile into a direct comparison: where the prose asked and answered a rhetorical question about the grass, the verse states outright that even the impossible — dry grass surviving a kalpa-ending fire fierce enough to pierce vajra — remains more conceivable than a single gap in the tathāgata's own knowledge, closing the comparison with the strongest claim the image can bear.
