A Wheel-Turning King's Seven Treasures, and a Worthy Heir

A wheel-turning king's seven treasures scatter within seven days if no worthy prince survives to inherit them, and this teaching is exactly as fragile: it lives only in bodhisattvas born into the tathāgata's own family, and the chapter closes this section by naming ten abilities that hearing it, believing it, and entering it grants all at once.

A Fragile Inheritance, Ten Sudden Abilities

A cakravartin's regalia is worthless without an heir to receive it, and this dharma-gate is claimed to be exactly as dependent on true children of the tathāgata to survive; from there the text pivots to what actually changes in someone who hears this teaching and believes it — ten abilities granted at once, from beholding every buddha directly to observing all things through a single dharma.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Sons of the Buddha! It is like how a wheel-turning king possesses seven treasures, and it is because of these treasures that he is revealed as a wheel-turning king; these treasures never fall into the hands of any other person at all, except for the crown prince born of his chief queen, who is fully endowed with every mark of a noble king. Should the wheel-turning king have no such prince endowed with every virtue, then after the king's life ends, all these treasures will scatter and vanish entirely within seven days. Sons of the Buddha! The jeweled treasure of this sūtra is likewise so: it never falls into the hands of any other sentient being at all, except for the true child of the tathāgata, the dharma-king — one born into the tathāgata's own family, who has planted roots of goodness bearing the tathāgata's own mark. Sons of the Buddha! Without such true children of the Buddha, this dharma-gate would soon scatter and vanish. Why is this? Because followers of either of the two vehicles never even hear this sūtra — how much less could they uphold it, recite it, copy it out, or explain and expound it! Only bodhisattvas are capable of doing so. For this reason, when a bodhisattva-mahāsattva hears this dharma-gate, they should give rise to great joy, and receive it upon the crown of their head with a reverent, respectful mind. Why is this? Because a bodhisattva-mahāsattva who has faith in and delights in this sūtra will swiftly attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening.

Ru-Yi Translation

Sons of the Buddha! Suppose a bodhisattva were to practice the six pāramitās and cultivate every kind of factor of awakening for measureless hundreds of thousands of koṭis of nayutas of kalpas. If they have not yet heard this dharma-gate of the tathāgata's inconceivable, great, majestic virtue, or if, having heard it, they do not believe it, do not understand it, do not accord with it, and do not enter into it, they cannot be called a true bodhisattva, because they are unable to be born into the tathāgata's own family. But if they come to hear this dharma-gate of the tathāgata's measureless, inconceivable, unobstructed, unhindered wisdom, and having heard it, believe and understand it, according with it and awakening into it, one should know that this person is born into the tathāgata's own family, accords with every domain of the tathāgata, is fully endowed with every bodhisattva dharma, abides in the domain of all-species wisdom, has left behind every worldly dharma, gives rise to everything the tathāgata does, penetrates the true nature of every bodhisattva dharma, has a mind free of any doubt regarding the Buddha's own sovereign freedom, abides in the dharma that needs no teacher, and enters deeply into the tathāgata's own unobstructed domain. Sons of the Buddha! Once a bodhisattva-mahāsattva has heard this dharma, they become able, through equanimous wisdom, to know measureless dharmas; become able, through an upright mind, to be free of every discrimination; become able, through supreme aspiration and joy, to directly behold every buddha; become able, through the power of attention, to enter the equanimous realm of empty space; become able, through sovereign mindfulness, to move throughout the boundless dharma-realm; become able, through the power of wisdom, to be complete in every merit; become able, through spontaneous wisdom, to be free of every worldly defilement; become able, through the mind of awakening, to enter the net of all ten directions; become able, through great, sweeping observation, to know that every buddha of the three times shares one and the same essential nature; and become able, through the wisdom of dedicating roots of goodness, to universally enter this very dharma — entering without entering, clinging to no single dharma, yet forever observing every dharma through this single dharma. Sons of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva who accomplishes merit such as this expends but little effort, and attains wisdom that arises spontaneously, needing no teacher at all."

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

不入而入;不於一法而有攀緣,恒以一法觀一切法 — entering without entering, clinging to no single dharma, yet forever observing every dharma through this single dharma. The tenth and final ability quietly undercuts the nine that precede it: after nine abilities described as things a bodhisattva comes to do, the tenth describes something closer to a way of no longer needing to do anything at all — a fitting close to a list that begins with practicing for countless kalpas and ends with an effort so light the text calls it "little."

Part 680 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-seven, 如來出現品, in fascicle fifty-two. Part 681 restates this section in verse, then the whole assembly's world-systems shake in six ways and eighteen distinct movements as the Buddha's own spiritual power responds to the teaching just completed.
