Verse Recap, Then the World-Systems Shake in Eighteen Ways

Samantabhadra folds the vajra, grass-fire, and medicine-tree similes into four closing verses, and the whole cosmos responds at once: every world-system trembles in eighteen distinct ways, clouds of flowers and jewels and buddha-voices fill the sky, and countless tathāgatas — every one of them also named Samantabhadra — appear to confirm this teaching and bestow predictions of awakening on the assembly.

Countless Buddhas, All Named Samantabhadra

A four-verse recap of the whole roots-of-goodness teaching gives way to the chapter's grand closing gesture: an eighteen-fold earthquake, skies filled with clouds of every offering imaginable, and buddhas beyond counting — every single one sharing Samantabhadra's own name — stepping forward to confirm that this same teaching is being spoken, word for word, in every world-system at once.

"At that time, wishing to restate this meaning once more, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva spoke these verses: 'The merit gained through seeing, hearing, and making offerings to every tathāgata cannot be measured; it is never exhausted within the conditioned world, and is bound to extinguish every affliction and leave every suffering behind.

It is like a person who swallows even a small piece of vajra: it is never digested, and is bound to emerge in the end; the merit of making offerings to the one of ten powers likewise extinguishes affliction and is bound to reach vajra-like wisdom.

Just as a heap of dry grass piled as high as Mount Sumeru is entirely burned away by a flame no larger than a mustard seed, even the smallest merit from making offerings to the buddhas is bound to cut off affliction and reach nirvāṇa.

The Himalaya has a medicine named Well-Seen; seeing it, hearing of it, smelling it, or touching it dissolves every sickness; whoever sees or hears of the one of ten powers attains supreme merit and arrives at buddha-wisdom.'"

At that time, through the Buddha's own spiritual power, and because the dharma is naturally so, in each of the ten directions unspeakably many hundreds of thousands of koṭis of nayutas of world-systems shook in six ways: rising in the east and sinking in the west, rising in the west and sinking in the east, rising in the south and sinking in the north, rising in the north and sinking in the south, rising at the edges and sinking in the center, and rising in the center and sinking at the edges. They moved in eighteen distinct ways: trembling, trembling everywhere, trembling everywhere equally; rising, rising everywhere, rising everywhere equally; surging, surging everywhere, surging everywhere equally; quaking, quaking everywhere, quaking everywhere equally; roaring, roaring everywhere, roaring everywhere equally; and crashing, crashing everywhere, crashing everywhere equally. There rained down, surpassing every heaven, clouds of every kind of flower, clouds of every kind of canopy, clouds of banners, clouds of pennants, clouds of incense, clouds of garlands, clouds of scented unguents, clouds of ornaments, clouds of great, radiant maṇi jewels, clouds of bodhisattvas offering praise, clouds of unspeakably many bodhisattvas each with a distinct body; there rained down clouds of the attainment of perfect awakening, clouds of the adornment and purification of inconceivable world-systems, and clouds of the tathāgata's own spoken voice, filling the boundless dharma-realm completely. Just as the tathāgata's spiritual power manifested in this way throughout these four continents, causing every bodhisattva to give rise to great joy, it was likewise so throughout every world-system in all ten directions without exception.

At that time, from beyond world-systems as numerous as the dust-motes of eighty unspeakably many hundreds of thousands of koṭis of nayutas of buddha-lands in each of the ten directions, tathāgatas as numerous as the dust-motes of eighty unspeakably many hundreds of thousands of koṭis of nayutas of buddha-lands, all sharing the single name Samantabhadra, appeared before the assembly and spoke these words: "Excellent, excellent! Son of the Buddha! You have been able, upheld by the Buddha's own majestic power and according with the nature of dharma, to expound the inconceivable dharma of the tathāgata's own appearance. Son of the Buddha! We, sharing this same name, as numerous as the dust-motes of eighty unspeakably many hundreds of thousands of koṭis of nayutas of buddha-lands throughout the ten directions, all expound this very dharma; and just as we have spoken it, every buddha throughout every world-system in the ten directions likewise speaks it in just the same way. Son of the Buddha! In this very assembly now, bodhisattva-mahāsattvas as numerous as the dust-motes of a hundred thousand buddha-lands have attained the samādhi of every bodhisattva's spiritual power; we ourselves bestow upon every one of them the prediction that, within a single lifetime, they will attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening. Sentient beings as numerous as the dust-motes of a buddha-land have given rise to the resolve for unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening; we likewise bestow upon them the prediction that, in a future age, after unspeakably many kalpas as numerous as the dust-motes of buddha-lands, they will all attain buddhahood, sharing the single name Buddha's Supreme Domain. For the sake of causing every future bodhisattva to hear this very dharma, we all together shall uphold and protect it. Just as this is true of the beings delivered throughout these four continents, it is likewise true, without number and without measure, of the beings delivered throughout hundreds of thousands of koṭis of nayutas of world-systems in the ten directions, all the way to the beings delivered throughout every world-system equal in extent to the dharma-realm and empty space itself, unspeakably, unspeakably many."

各有八十不可說百千億那由他佛剎微塵數如來,同名:普賢 — tathāgatas as numerous as the dust-motes of eighty unspeakably many hundreds of thousands of koṭis of nayutas of buddha-lands, all sharing the single name Samantabhadra. The confirming buddhas share their name not with Vairocana, the assembly's own host, but with Samantabhadra, the bodhisattva who has been speaking this entire chapter — a detail that quietly closes the loop opened by 如來性起妙德菩薩's name back at the chapter's start: the one giving this teaching and the countless buddhas verifying it turn out to bear the same name, "Universally Worthy," as if the teaching's own universality had become a proper name.

Part 681 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-seven, 如來出現品, in fascicle fifty-two. Part 682 completes this chapter and fascicle: countless bodhisattvas arrive from beyond even farther world-systems to bear witness, and Samantabhadra closes with a final verse charging the assembly to hold this teaching and never grow heedless.
