Peace of Mind, Ripening Beings, and Ten Precepts
Every one of the ten ways a bodhisattva's mind attains peace is doubled — what they secure for themselves, they secure for another in the same breath — before the answers turn to ten ways of bringing sentient beings to accomplishment, from ordinary generosity to blazing manifestation across every world, and finally ten precepts anchored first and last in never abandoning the mind of awakening.
A Peace That Comes in Pairs
The tenfold list of peace of mind repeats a single structure ten times over — securing something for oneself only ever alongside securing it for another — before the questions turn outward to method, listing ten distinct ways of bringing beings to accomplishment, and then inward again to ten precepts that begin and end with the mind of awakening itself.
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten ways the mind attains peace and stability. What are these ten? Namely: abiding themselves in the mind of awakening, and also causing others to abide in the mind of awakening — the mind attains peace and stability; themselves ultimately leaving behind anger and contention, and also causing others to leave behind anger and contention — the mind attains peace and stability; themselves leaving behind the ways of the ordinary and foolish, and causing others to leave behind the ways of the ordinary and foolish — the mind attains peace and stability; themselves diligently cultivating roots of goodness, and causing others to diligently cultivate roots of goodness — the mind attains peace and stability; themselves abiding on the path of the pāramitās, and causing others to abide on the path of the pāramitās — the mind attains peace and stability; themselves being born into the Buddha's own family, and also causing others to be born into the Buddha's own family — the mind attains peace and stability; themselves entering deeply into the true dharma of no fixed nature, and causing others to enter the true dharma of no fixed nature — the mind attains peace and stability; themselves never slandering any dharma of the Buddha, and causing others never to slander any dharma of the Buddha — the mind attains peace and stability; themselves fulfilling their vow for all-knowing wisdom and awakening, and causing others to fulfill their own vow for all-knowing wisdom and awakening — the mind attains peace and stability; and themselves entering deeply into the inexhaustible treasury of wisdom of every tathāgata, and causing others to enter the inexhaustible treasury of wisdom of every tathāgata — the mind attains peace and stability. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide in this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, great peace of wisdom.
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten ways of bringing sentient beings to accomplishment. What are these ten? Namely: bringing sentient beings to accomplishment through generosity; bringing sentient beings to accomplishment through their own bodily form; bringing sentient beings to accomplishment through expounding the dharma; bringing sentient beings to accomplishment through practicing alongside them; bringing sentient beings to accomplishment through being free of any defiled attachment; bringing sentient beings to accomplishment through disclosing bodhisattva practice; bringing sentient beings to accomplishment through blazingly manifesting throughout every world; bringing sentient beings to accomplishment through manifesting the great majestic virtue of the Buddha's dharma; bringing sentient beings to accomplishment through every kind of spiritual transformation and manifestation; and bringing sentient beings to accomplishment through every kind of subtle, secret, skillful means. These are the ten. Through these, a bodhisattva brings the whole realm of sentient beings to accomplishment. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of moral discipline. What are these ten? Namely: the precept of never abandoning the mind of awakening; the precept of staying far from the grounds of the two vehicles; the precept of observing what benefits every sentient being; the precept of causing every sentient being to abide in the Buddha's dharma; the precept of practicing everything a bodhisattva must learn; the precept of attaining nothing at all with regard to every dharma; the precept of dedicating every root of goodness toward awakening; the precept of not clinging to the body of any tathāgata; the precept of reflecting on every dharma while free of grasping and attachment; and the precept of discipline over every sense faculty. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide in this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, vast pāramitā of moral discipline.
自住菩提心,亦當令他住菩提心,心得安隱 — abiding themselves in the mind of awakening, and also causing others to abide in the mind of awakening — the mind attains peace and stability. Every one of the ten entries in this list follows the same shape: self, then other, then peace — a structure that quietly denies the possibility of a private peace of mind in this teaching. None of the ten states listed ever count as achieved on the strength of the bodhisattva's own attainment alone.
Part 688 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-eight, 離世間品, in fascicle fifty-three. Part 689 answers the next question with the ten dharmas by which a bodhisattva comes to know their own prediction of awakening without needing to be told.
