Entering a Kalpa, Every Kalpa as a Single Thought
Time itself becomes the subject of four ten-fold lists in a row — entering kalpas both countable and uncountable, speaking of the three times cross-wise into each other, knowing that every convention of time is ultimately empty — before the questions turn to a tireless mind and, finally, ten kinds of wisdom that discern the differences among beings, worlds, and every path of language.
Every Kalpa, Cross-Wise Through Every Other
The entries on entering a kalpa and speaking of the three times work by deliberate cross-reference — the past speaking of the future, the future speaking of the present, a countable kalpa entered as an uncountable one — building toward the claim that every kalpa collapses into a single thought, before the list turns to tirelessness and to ten distinct kinds of wisdom, each discerning difference in its own domain.
"Through these, a bodhisattva universally enters every world in the ten directions. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of entry into a kalpa. What are these ten? Namely: entering a past kalpa; entering a future kalpa; entering a present kalpa; entering a countable kalpa; entering an uncountable kalpa; entering a countable kalpa that is itself an uncountable kalpa; entering an uncountable kalpa that is itself a countable kalpa; entering every kalpa that is itself no kalpa at all; entering what is no kalpa at all that is itself every kalpa; and entering every kalpa that is itself a single thought. These are the ten. Through these, a bodhisattva universally enters every kalpa. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten ways of speaking of the three times. What are these ten? Namely: speaking of the past age within the past age; speaking of the future age within the past age; speaking of the present age within the past age; speaking of the past age within the future age; speaking of the present age within the future age; speaking of inexhaustibility within the future age; speaking of the past age within the present age; speaking of the future age within the present age; speaking of equality within the present age; and speaking of the three times as a single thought within the present age. These are the ten. Through these, a bodhisattva universally speaks of the three times. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of knowledge of the three times. What are these ten? Namely: knowing every established convention; knowing every language; knowing every discourse; knowing every rule and pattern; knowing every designation; knowing every regulation; knowing that these are all provisional names; knowing that they are inexhaustible; knowing that they are still and extinguished; and knowing that all of it is empty. These are the ten. Through these, a bodhisattva universally knows every dharma of the three times.
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva gives rise to ten kinds of mind without weariness. What are these ten? Namely: a mind without weariness in making offerings to every buddha; a mind without weariness in drawing near to every good spiritual friend; a mind without weariness in seeking every dharma; a mind without weariness in listening to the true dharma; a mind without weariness in proclaiming the true dharma; a mind without weariness in teaching and taming every sentient being; a mind without weariness in placing every sentient being upon the Buddha's own awakening; a mind without weariness in carrying out bodhisattva practice, in each and every world, across unspeakably, unspeakably many kalpas; a mind without weariness in traveling throughout every world; and a mind without weariness in observing and reflecting upon every dharma of the Buddha. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide in this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own tireless, unsurpassed great wisdom. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of differentiated wisdom. What are these ten? Namely: the differentiated wisdom that knows the differences among sentient beings; the differentiated wisdom that knows the differences among faculties; the differentiated wisdom that knows the differences of karmic result; the differentiated wisdom that knows the differences of taking birth; the differentiated wisdom that knows the differences among worlds; the differentiated wisdom that knows the differences within the dharma-realm; the differentiated wisdom that knows the differences among buddhas; the differentiated wisdom that knows the differences among dharmas; the differentiated wisdom that knows the differences of the three times; and the differentiated wisdom that knows the differences among every path of language. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide in this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, vast, differentiated wisdom.
入一切劫即非劫;入非劫即一切劫;入一切劫即一念 — entering every kalpa that is itself no kalpa at all; entering what is no kalpa at all that is itself every kalpa; and entering every kalpa that is itself a single thought. The list on entering a kalpa builds deliberately: first past, future, and present; then countable and uncountable; then each folded into the other; and only at the very end, once every ordinary way of dividing time has been exhausted, does it arrive at the claim that time collapses into a single thought — a conclusion the list earns through its own structure rather than simply asserting.
