Eloquence, Sovereign Freedom, Non-Attachment, and Equanimity
Four ten-fold lists move from speech to freedom to detachment to equanimity: ten kinds of eloquence that never fail a listener, ten kinds of sovereign freedom spanning discipline and demon-destroying wisdom alike, ten kinds of non-attachment applied even to bodhisattvas and buddhas themselves, and ten equanimous minds that refuse to distinguish even a pure land from a defiled one.
Non-Attachment Extended to Everything, Even the Path
The list of non-attachment does not stop at ordinary objects — worlds, sentient beings, actions — but extends the same detachment to vows, practices, and finally to bodhisattvas and buddhas themselves; the equanimity that follows carries this logic one step further, refusing even to privilege a pure land over a defiled one.
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of eloquence. What are these ten? Namely: eloquence without discrimination toward every dharma; eloquence without any contrivance toward every dharma; eloquence without any attachment toward every dharma; eloquence that fully penetrates the emptiness of every dharma; eloquence free of any doubt or darkness toward every dharma; eloquence empowered by every buddha toward every dharma; eloquence of one's own awakened understanding toward every dharma; eloquence skilled in the distinct words and phrases of every dharma; eloquence that speaks every dharma truthfully; and eloquence that accords with the mind of every sentient being and brings them joy. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide in this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, skillful, wondrous eloquence. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of sovereign freedom. What are these ten? Namely: sovereign freedom in teaching and taming every sentient being; sovereign freedom in universally illuminating every dharma; sovereign freedom in cultivating the practice of every root of goodness; sovereign freedom of vast wisdom; sovereign freedom of moral discipline that relies on nothing at all; sovereign freedom in dedicating every root of goodness toward awakening; sovereign freedom of diligence that never regresses; sovereign freedom of wisdom that destroys every host of māras; sovereign freedom in causing beings, according to their own desire, to give rise to the mind of awakening; and sovereign freedom in manifesting the attainment of perfect awakening according to whoever needs to be transformed. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide in this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, great sovereign freedom of wisdom.
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of non-attachment. What are these ten? Namely: non-attachment toward every world; non-attachment toward every sentient being; non-attachment toward every dharma; non-attachment toward everything they undertake; non-attachment toward every root of goodness; non-attachment toward every place of taking birth; non-attachment toward every vow; non-attachment toward every practice; non-attachment toward every bodhisattva; and non-attachment toward every buddha. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide in this dharma, they are swiftly able to transform every ordinary conception, attaining unsurpassed, pure wisdom. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of equanimous mind. What are these ten? Namely: an equanimous mind in accumulating every merit; an equanimous mind in giving rise to every distinct vow; an equanimous mind toward the body of every sentient being; an equanimous mind toward the karmic result of every sentient being; an equanimous mind toward every dharma; an equanimous mind toward every pure and defiled land; an equanimous mind toward the understanding of every sentient being; an equanimous mind without any discrimination toward every practice; an equanimous mind toward the powers and fearlessnesses of every buddha; and an equanimous mind toward the wisdom of every tathāgata. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within these, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, great equanimous mind.
The list of ten non-attachments builds toward its own most difficult case: after letting go of worlds, beings, and even one's own vows and practices, it ends by refusing attachment to the very figures — bodhisattvas, buddhas — that everything else in this teaching holds up as the goal, making clear that detachment here admits no privileged exception.
Part 695 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-eight, 離世間品, in fascicle fifty-three. Part 696 answers the next questions with ten kinds of wisdom that give rise to further wisdom, and ten kinds of transformation reaching from a bodhisattva's own body to the act of teaching itself.
